@TinKnight2 жыл бұрын
Polycarbonate is remarkably resilient & nearly impossible to shatter, even when paper thin, & is relatively cheap (I did my floor-to-ceiling family room windows for around $300 inc shipping & custom framing). When 3/4" thick, it's bulletproof, but still has the light transmission of glass (granted, we're talking pistols & resistance to single rifle shots rather than full automatic rifle/machine gun fire, but still)...and the very high cost would be nothing for a high security area. Just because something looks like glass doesn't mean it's glass.

This trope has been used so many times, that now I want to see a game make the setup, but it is later in the game, when your character can break glass. Then there are two ways you can go: think that the glass cannot be broken because of the trope, don't try and watch the person die; or, realize your character is in fact strong enough to break the glass, do so, and save the person.
@Caedus90012 жыл бұрын

It would be even better if they play it straight the first time, but by the second time you've explicitly gotten strong enough to break the "reinforced" glass. Then the smirking bad guy gets up close, to taunt you. Then the QTE button appears. You can ignore it, but that just means your character grabs the bad guy after they turn away, to make it even more brutal.

I don't know if I would call Sophia Lamb's death a "tragedy", considering [SPOILER ALERT] she is the big baddie of Bioshock 2, mind-controlled you into shooting yourself in front of your daughter at the start of the game, tried to brainwash Eleanor for years, AND tried to smother her with a pillow when she refused to obey her ... oh, and the whole "trying to take over the world and end Human existence as we know it through some kind of assimiliation plot" thing, too. Sure, she IS some kind of mother figure to Eleanor, however twisted, but ... *suddenly remembers that her death is the prelude to Eleanor going full-throttle evil and being unleashed upon the surface world with superpowers and technology far ahead of the rest of the world* Oh, nevermind. I see it now.
@docette20152 жыл бұрын
Good point about that, but I think the ACTUAL moment the commenter in the first one was referring to was, in fact, Eleanor nearly being smothered because THAT happens behind glass too if I remember correctly, and I think the commenter just mixed up the names. It would make a LOT more sense because Eleanor is who Delta has been chasing this entire time, and you come SO CLOSE to reuniting -- and then Sophia pulls that, and the endgame starts with you learning you're inevitably going to die. Oof.

For casual Star Wars fans, probably Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II - Mysteries of the Sith, where *SPOILERS* To finally beat the otherwise unstoppable and Dark Side-corrupted Kyle "Forcedamned" Katarn in the endgame, you (as Mara Jade, future wife to Luke Skywalker in the Legends continuity) have to accept being one with the Force (in short, death) all while hoping that her corrupted Master snaps out of his Dark Side reverie and spare her... suffice to say, she succeeds. To lore veterans, such acceptance was already done by other characters such as Ulic Qel-Droma from the Tales of the Jedi comics, Obi-Wan Kenobi from Ep. IV, and even Cal Kestis during his final confrontation with the Jaro Tapal apparition in Dathomir from Jedi: Fallen Order, so it wasn't hard for them to figure it out.

Star Wars Republic Commando. In the Prosecutor campaign you're stuck behind glass not once, not twice, BUT THREE TIMES has you watch some poor clones get killed and even watch one of your team mates get jumped. 1. Right after you enter the ship you come across a lone trooper who is hiding on a walk way on the other side of the walkway you're on. Both of which are covered in windows. The poor trooper then gets jumped by a scavenger droid and killed while you watch helplessly. 2. A little later, after being attacked by a scavenger droid, he comes across the windowed hole in the floor. There he watches two more clone troopers charge something that is attacking them and seconds later watches as one of their heads rolls back into view. 3. A little later after that you met your teammate Sev. You watch him, from behind glass, attempt to retrieve data from one of the ship's data cores, but then gets jumped by a Trandoshon. He gets taken to a prison cell.

I'm not sure if it counts since it's in two minigames, but I think, personally, that it's a behind-glass tragedy that needs to be mentioned.

In Mass Effect 2 while you're trying to get out of a space station (very beginning). It's not as gruesome as some other examples, but there are a few places where mechs kill people behind the glass.

I can think of one example of the reverse to this situation - Arkham Knight, where you get into a room to rescue someone just as the main bad guy goons show up but can't attack you because you're protected by thick glass. they also can't stop you from remotely activating the cannon on the Batmobile conveniently located behind them.

Dead space has a lot of death scene behind glass. The most frustrating part behind the glass scene was in the first game when the main antagonists revealed herself and explain all of her plan. I wanted to shot her but couldn't because of glass.

in Bendy and the Ink Machine you first see/encounter Alice when there's glass between the two of you. (thus keeping you safe.) Also I think in Mass Effect Andromeda when you discover what happens to the Angara the Kett kidnap you're behind glass.

My favorite is the drawn out death scenes where characters in said death scenes have healing magic. There was that one scene in Batman: Arkham Knight where Oracle shot herself. All Batman could do is watch helplessly behind glass. But then we find that it was the fear toxin manipulating his brain and she was alive.

It's almost as if this trope is a subtle bit of recognition that all video game shots are basically just brighter spots of light moving about on a field of light that is constantly, inevitably, hitting you, the player in the face from behind a pane of glass. Shoot as many enemies as you like, the game will always have shot you more because of the one-way shooting gallery that is the screen.
@HunterX052 жыл бұрын
in the beginning of Batman Arkham Origins, you watch Commissioner Loeb get gassed from the other side of some glass... remember this is a game where you can break glass, and do break this instance of glass after the cutscene
@HunterX052 жыл бұрын
There's also an instance in Arkham Knight, but it wouldn't technically count due to the entire sequence being a Scarecrow induced hallucination

I could be wrong, but it looks like you're still underwater in Bioshock 2 when Eleanor kills Sophia. If you broke the glass, she'd still be drowning, which looks like you wouldn't have much time fight or hold off Eleanor judging by how quickly Sophia drowns

I don't think you guys or Oxbox have done an episode themed around this- But I was thinking an interesting list to make would be problematic favorite characters in games- Either NPCs, PCs or Protagonists that do countless horrible things as canon in the story, but are still beloved by the fan base regardless. My biggest example of this is the Raiden Shogun or Ei from Genshin Impact. She not only is a tyrant god who keeps her entire nation in a perpetual loop of eternity, but also left a soulless puppet to carry out that fate for her nation for her while she just lives inside her own consciousness in her dead twin sister's sword. Yes, she does eventually acknowledge her wrong doing, but that only comes after 500 years of ignoring her people and nation entirely- Overcome by grief and sadness so bad that I think she needs to see around 7 separate therapists for. People love her though because she pulls a sword from her bossom and has a real 'Step on me Mommy' air about her. (While I don't really buy into it one bit to be honest)

Back in 2015 I went to London from the States and bought a ticket to the Conference promotion final between Grimsby Town and Bristol Rovers. My neutral ticket ended up being right next to the Grimsby section and during half time I played volleyball with some kids on the Grimsby side who would hit the inflatable ball back to me with their giant inflatable fish. It left me with a fondness for the people of that town.

I know you've covered the Arkham games before, but much like how The Joker keeps coming back to torment Batman so too does the dreaded impenetrable glass. In Akham Knight there's a segment where Batman is completely helpless to stop Barbara Gordon from being sprayed with Scarecrows newest fear gas and the scene that unfolds. Even "The World's Greatest Detective" must submit to the glass's power.

Weird and sort of tenuous example from Fallout New Vegas. In Camp McCarran there's a captured Legion Officer being interrogated behind a pane of glass. Whilst you the player can get in and interrogate/murder the prisoner at your leisure, Boone - your legion-hating companion - can do nothing but stand and scowl beyond the glass as you potentially treat the prisoner of war with kindness, or even break him loose. Luckily for Boone, he has his chance to kill the legionaire if you break them out by smuggling a weapon to them.
