I have a Tag Heuer 2000 quartz that I bought new in 1997 (pre LVMH takeover). It has spent 90% of my days since then on my wrist. It has been serviced by Tag a couple of times and works perfectly and is extremely accurate. It never looks out of place with jeans and a t-shirt or a formal suit. It is an everyday essential that has served me well for over 26 years.

Back in 1999 through 2002, I had two of those. I was very hard on them. The first one was fixed and eventually replaced under warranty, and the 2nd one was lost. The tag was my main everyday watch. Back then I had two Movado Museum watches, one gold, on leather, and one SS on a bracelet that I barely wore. My pride and joy the Bond Seamaster 36 mm that I bought brand new at a jewelry store in the mall. A Fossil Chrono-Diver, and of course a Timex digital. All Quartz watches. At the time I had zero idea what an automatic was. I still have all of them, except the Tag. I still wear the Seamaster regularly. Occasionally I pull out the Fossil for nostalgia. Now I'm heading over to Watchrecon and E-bay to see how much they are.

I'd like to add an 8th type just for fun: that watch that you love but hold back on buying it because of other collectors might say. For the longest time I was in love with the King Seikos and held myself back from getting it because its movement was subpar and everyone in the community was saying that it was an overpriced piece of garbage. I then realised that I loved it and its design made me smile so much that I wouldn't really care about what other collectors had to say, cause in the end, I was the one wearing it everyday. My King Seiko SPB279 makes me happy everyday 🙌🏼 that's the thing about this hobby, many times it doesn't make sense and it doesn't need to 🙂

Congrats. I'd echo what Teddy says about watch collecting being a marathon and not a sprint - take your time, research watch brands, types, and your use cases. Buy a watch because YOU love it, not because it's trendy or trending, because selling one you've changed your mind about comes with a financial cost - almost always losing some money, which is okay if you've had the watch for a while and have enjoyed it in that time. Lastly as you buy up in price and over time, then think about classics and their potential resale value and marketability. All the best in your journey.

I own four watches and am absolutely not a part of the mechanical watch community, but hear me out please. All four are Citizen Eco Drives. I absolutely love them. They never have to be wound or serviced. They fit me. That said, three of those four are over a decade old, so they don't have them in their offer sheet anymore. In any case, my watches are: a plain silver/white everyday/dress watch that I have worn more than 95% of the time over the last twenty years. That's probably worn over 8000 days, but my math. Then. what is roughly that same watch in black, for occasions when I can fit that stark dark pattern into my wardrobe effortlessly. Then a gold-rimmed, navy face, leather strap. And then an over-the-top (to me, who likes simple) tachymeter that my wife got me about five years ago. I'm convinced that's a great breakdown. 1 simple silver band/face for everyday/dress. 1 simple gold/navy face with leather band. And then usecase specific alternatives such as my all-black or my weekender tachymeter. Another example would be a nato band summer watch. Once again, I'm aware this doesn't fit the mould of the community, but I figured my outsider perspective might be welcomed as well.

I like the idea of summer watches. Usually something that’s colorful, fun, and represents an escape from the routine of everyday life.

I agree with this entire vid but I'd say that there's one category that's missing and it's the "wildcard design" watch, one that looks out there and different from everything else you might own. for some people this might be something super classical, for some others this might be a LED watch like a Computron or a Pulsar, even a milspec field watch or a watch that's just built well enough and looks really fun

I just got a Seiko King Samurai for Christmas that is my first real deal watch. Grew up loving Casio's and still wear them, but this watch is amazing. One of the best deals out there in my opinion. Ceramic and Sapphire for 500 bucks and a classic look. Mine also runs about +2 seconds a day which is awesome. Couldn't recommend it more.

For my lifestyle I have discovered that a DIVE watch with a 12 hour bezel works best for me but they are rare. I prefer a 12 hour bezel over a true GMT 24 hour bezel.

Some watches can double dip in some categories: you dive watch can also be your beater, your daily watch is versatile enough to be dressed up or down, or even better, it can also be quartz like the Tissot prx or the gentleman quartz. But the most important thing is to consider what you like, as long as you love your watch, go for it. (Also, your budget. Having a student budget is not easy)

In the diver category I like the Citizen Pro master (used for a decade by the Italian Navy), and the Marathon.

Teddy, this is another great video. I would highly recommend it to someone who's starting their watch collecting journey. It's great food for thought. The part about being a cerebral watch buyer makes a lot of sense. A watch really is an extension of our personality. Lots of people buy a watch to be in vogue with the rest of the crowd but I think a true watch collector is one who would be just as happy wearing a Casio Duro compared to his buddy who has a Rolex Sub. You're right.....A watch is a luxury, but boy, we sure do love them all the same! Thanks Teddy!

Love my Seiko PADI turtle. Way better accuracy than stated from the factory. +6 secs/ day on average.
Such a great selection of brands, thank you Teddy. Could Vintage be a category of its own? Collectors could look into the history most modern watches pick their design queues from

As someone who recently became interested in watches more for their fashion and functionality, it was quite funny to see the first image for Quartz be the literal watch I got to start my "collection."

I have also been collecting watches along these types/categories too. Now moving on to collecting watches by their design technology (spring drive, co-axial, solar-powered etc).

For me, a smart watch is a no-brainer in a collection. With a smart watch, especially a watch with an e-sim, one can go exercise without the phone and still be reachable. And with just a smart watch and Bluetooth headphones, you got all the music you need when exercising.

Yes, I have bought from MAMACOO more than once. I even bought a new Omega Speedmaster which came with the fancy box and packaging. I am thrilled with all my purchases here. I would purchase from MAMACOO again for sure.

Thank you as always...... My humble suggestion for an ultimate universal watch would be an Alpinist GMT. Beater, dress, go anywhere, do anything, GMT and with horological significance....

I had the good fortune to inherit a few great watches (Rolex Datejust, 60’s Omega Seamaster, and a 50’s IWC mechanical. I also have my dad’s 40’s Bulova tank, and my grandfather’s Waltham RR pocket watch. Now I have the watch bug, but don’t know where to focus, plus I’m too cheap to part with the bucks for watches I really like (e.g. Tudor Black Bay 58). So, here I sit living my watch life vicariously through Teddy’s videos, and waiting for another gem to drop in my lap. 🥴

I guess it depends on your job, but for me a watch is absolutely essential. Casio is fine, no need for expensive stuff, but some of us still have to wear a watch everyday. It’s not just jewellery.

Another great video, thank you, Teddy! I would add a historical/classic category. As well as some recent watches, one watch I will always keep is the Omega Constellation my parents gave me over 40 years ago. The classification by dress/sports/diver etc. is probably less relevant when buying a historical piece, but you could choose a personal connection (as I have), a design in vogue at a particular period or a watch which marked a major technical advance. I keep my 1981 Omega regularly maintained and still wear it (in fact, it's on my wrist today).

Good roundup, Teddy. I would also add a few more categories for consideration: field/military; pilot/flieger, novelty/funky (like MB&F, Urwerk etc.), and smart watches (Apple watch). Vintage could also be considered a category that cuts across all these different types. Finally, for women I would add “jewelry watch,” ie the watches that are bejeweled usually with lots of gemstones or diamonds, and are often offered by jewelry brands more than watch brands per se.
@EatRiceSleep10 ай бұрын
I think everyone should consider a vintage. I know that a vintage watch can intersect with other categories but just anything vintage because i think the experience of searching a nice vintage you like and trying to track them down and the era specific styles they come in are unlike anything else

Hey Teddy! Love your videos and huge fan for a few years now- Please make a video for fatter wrists so bigger case diameters! Its soo hard to find good (affordable) watches over 42 especially in the automatic range. Please help more of us out there. Great recommendations for smaller wrists but we need some love too lol
