7 big upgrades! 1. Same size but shorter - helps If for some reason you need 3 of them. 2. More processing power for stuff it doesn’t do yet 3. 10 more decibels for people who need 10 more decibels. 4. Trigger function for those who find a power button too taxing. 5. Voice control, all your need is a product from another company that does voice control. 6.... where’s six? 7. I guess they were counting black as an update? Ok, it’s black.

We had a 1st gen Echo in our master bathroom for listening to music in the morning kzbin.infoUgkxABghAEkaIDGZfHRBH3D3rBrlraNmnC71 and while in the shower. I didn't realize how tinny and awful the sound output on the original Echo was until we replaced it with the Studio. It was a sonic upgrade far beyond what I was expecting. Just wow. I love it because it's like having speakers IN the shower. My friend likes it because the music is so loud that she can no longer hear me singing. So that's a win-win.

Because, in truth, the SONOS PORT is really not any significant upgrade to the SONOS Connect, but they still need to bullshit you into justifying why they are charging more than $100+ for it over the Connect. When a manufacture only sites size and color as a unit's primary upgrade, that means nothing significant has changed. Anyone can hack the Connect and add a 12v trigger or relay. Downsizing and reducing heat means they removed the internal AC/DC power board and gave you a separate power AC adapter instead. It does make the unit more versatile, but it also decreases complexity and manufacturing costs.

I love the point at 3:50 that SONOS is great because they rarely break, then 56 days after they post the video, SONOS says "We're going to break every CONNECT". Not Audio Advice's fault, but I'd drop them if I was the owner of Audio Advice and start working with Yamaha's MusicCast, Denon's HEOS or B&W. So you don't have to listen to 8 minutes to find out 7 improvements, they are as follows: 1. It's smaller 2. It's black 3. More processing power (the excuse SONOS is using to keep from updating any CONNECTS - as opposed to simply creating a bridge component that can continue use the older CONNECTS in a master -slave relationship) 4. A 10db improvement in S/N (signal to noise ratio) - basically the old CONNECTS were sold as audiophile quality actually weren't. 5. Added a trigger, so the SONOS can automatically turn on an external AMP if it has a trigger input. Nothing CONTROL4 couldn't do without a trigger). 6. Support for airplay 2 - basically if someone doesn't want to use SONOS and instead just use their iPhone, they can do it through SONOS. 7. He said something about voice control, but the PORT doesn't directly have a mic, you need an Amazon Echo or other device, which also worked with the CONNECT, so not sure if I'm missing the 7th way it is better. 8. He forgot to mention the PORT costs $450 while the CONNECT cost $350.

I was basically saying the same thing. 1: Its Smaller? They removed the internal AC/CD rectifier board and gave you a AC/DC power adapter instead. That actually makes the unit cheaper and less complex. 1A: Its Cooler? Well? That's what happens when you remove the internal AC/DC rectifier board. Duh! LMAO! 2: Color? Yup black paint costs a more than white paint. 3: Processing? Any processor/memory upgrade today will be a cheaper improvement to what was built 3 years ago. 4: 10db improvement in S/N? (You nailed that already!) 5: 12v Trigger? Hackers hacked the SONOS connect and found it easy to add. That means no considerable re-design necessary to add it. 6: Support for Airplay 2? Nothing a change in Software can't handle. Might need a memory increase....Like I said, any upgrade today is cheaper than tech 3 years ago. 7: Voice control? That has to do with the cloud (How SONOS servers interact with AMAZON online), not the hardware. So I see nothing here as well. 8: How convenient!

"Without further delay" he says at 4:30, then finally gets into the differences. C'mon guys! 1. Size- smaller size uses 1U in an equipment rack 2. Color- comes in black 3. More powerful processor 4. 10db S/N improvement 5.12V trigger for external power amp 6. Voice compatible- Google, Alexa and HomeKit (not sure if it really controls Sonos or not) 7. Airplay 2 The only thing that really is a pretty big deal for the new "Connect" IMHO is the 12V trigger and for some the Airplay 2 feature for Bluetooth streaming directly an iOS device. The voice compatibility could be if that is how you use the "connect". You lose optical out for external DAC, but at least still have a coax and of course the legacy products app incompatibility issue. All an all a nice, but already expensive unit that is now even more so for what mostly amounts to cosmetic changes and a few tweaks. High res capability (24/192 at a minimum) with more digital output options for connecting to more more capable DACs, direct voice enabling perhaps and a direct sub output would have been nice for the upgrade price and remain on my wish list.

I originally bought a Sonos Connect along with their expensive ($200, I think) stand alone controller (which was wonderful). I loved the system and used it for a few years. Then, Sonos decided to no longer sell the separate controller. That’s okay but they also no longer offered the dedicated replacement battery! Now I have an expensive controller I can’t source a battery for. Strike one. Today, I receive an email stating my system won’t be supported after May and will eventually fade into oblivion! Strike two. Generally, Sonos builds a decent product but there’s no doubt they’re overpriced and don’t support high resolutions. Strike three. I’m done with Sonos.

So you need one connect or port for each zone you want to have? Pool, bedroom, kitchen you would need three? Is that to be able to listen to different songs at the same time? Can’t you run the three rooms as long as it’s the same song? How would you control the volume in each room?

The Sonos Port has worse connectivity than the outgoing connect. It is way overproiced if you compare it with the HEOS Link HS2 (less than £300) which has much better connectivity as well. £400 just to allow you to connect to a HiFi/audio system is mad. The Echo Link allows you do do it for £25. This product alone (Port) is making me consider whether I should drop Sonos.

Still no support for anything higher than 16bit. I took my Connect out of the system and thought I might replace it with the Port .. if the Port offered Hi Rez. It looks like I’m going to go for an Auralic Vega, I think. Despite the little tweaks here and there, Sonos is rapidly being left behind by other manufacturers who are fully onboard with Hi Res. So long, Sonos 😢

Agreed. Sonos is actually pretty poor sounding when compared to even the Yamaha WXC50. But w/o getting into the Auralic series of streamers, the Auralic Aires mini was my last streamer until it was lost in a move. I'll be upgrading to the Volumio Primo which sounds fantastic for the price point. Many offerings out there that beat Sonos.

@DougEvans

@@kenwuk Indeed, it's a shame they can't do both. So many Hi Fi manufacturers went this route only to lose their way and degrade audio quality and saturate the department store "Hi Fi" sections with average equipment. Sonos could have made this streamer a Tidal, Qobuz, FLAC file, etc capable streamer with ease but just settled.

I’ve already ranted about the state of Sonos because of their recent business practices. That aside the port is no upgrade. Half height and being black isn’t upgrades. I’ve been using Alexa pucks to control my existing connects without issues so that’s another non-upgrade as well. They dropped the toslink output which I think is a step backward. I suppose you could argue that it probably makes no sound difference as many point out that neither support high res audio anyway. The only thing he is right about is the software is easy to use and has the highest support from streaming platforms. I suppose I will ride out what I have and upgrade then to a new platform. Some of the systems others has mentioned I’ve had to research but have been looking into the Yamaha and HeOs systems and even the amazon link which to be honest probably sounds just as good but the software I think uses the existing Alexa app doesn’t play well with Apple Music. Does anyone have experience with Denon/Marantz Heos?

@@AudioAdvice I bought it from an audio dealer here in Toronto. I have had this happen a couple of times a year. If I spend a couple of hours connecting the network cable to each unit (Running it to a local switch with a fibre connection to the main rack in the basement) and then fiddle with the app for an hour or so I can get it back. But my point is it's truly frustrating to lose the complete configuration every couple of months. The dealer I bought them from won't help since it was a clearance item, and he no longer sells SONOS after having to spend too much time on service and setup calls. Since I currently have it providing audio for my tv and the Play 1's are still working I am going to leave it alone for now and eventually get back to it. The only thing I use the app for is volume adjustment and muting it so it's not a high priority.

@@AudioAdvice I got it from a local audio store as a clearance item in Toronto several years ago. that dealer was clearing the SONOS product because his techs were spending too much time on service calls for them. Unfortunately, he has also gone out of business. That leaves me alone as the closest audio store near me only supports products they have directly sold. I called Sonos and they suggested re-installing Windows on my laptop. That is a no since the problem is on my cell phone. They are completely out of lunch.

This is utter garbage. It will not maintain it status blah blah blah. For something called "Port", it has woefully *few* ports. Optical output REMOVED. Volume and Play/Pause control REMOVED. *Nothing* added for digital input (a feature desired by many for a number of years) that would have been useful such as additional input via HDMI or optical. The i/o is nearly identical to the Connect except for the features *removed*. The only thing added is voice-support (which can achieved by many other devices - entirely unnecessary in this application), upgraded DAC (the previous version wasn't stellar but it was far from poor) which should be expected, and Apple Airplay 2. This product *could* have been a home-run but instead is a gigantic miss, and Sonos is rewarding users of the Connect by deprecating their system. In my opinion the entire situation is ridiculous, as is the nauseatingly *gushing* presentation in this video ignoring all the above. Oh, it's black. Hats off.
@TheJTcreate
@TheJTcreate 3 жыл бұрын
This is a big deal? For more that a $100 jump in cost? I love SONOS but the current Connect was already a bit expensive for what it offered. I see nothing that tells me the Port is a serious upgrade to the Connect. As soon as any equipment comparison starts with size and color as the big upgrade, it tells me not much has changed inside. A 12v trigger is nothing since the SONOS connect was hacked years ago and its easy to install one in it. So adding one does not explain the significant rise in cost. Ok, then, so SONOS made the unit smaller and cooler? Well, that's because SONOS took out the AC/DC power board with transformer, and opted for a DC in. I'm fine with that because it makes the unit more versatile but this is not a big deal for the cost. Anything that doesn't have an AC step down transformer with a DC rectifier/filter board in it is going to be much smaller and generates 70% less heat. So, instead, customers will have to contend with an AC/DC power adapter for the port. Removing the power board actually decreases manufacturing costs because it decreases complexity of the unit. There are ton of third party manufacturers who already create a whole product line of pre-existing AC/DC power adapters. SONOS just needs to select the right one, bulk order it and slap their label to it. Finally, SONOS made the SONOS PORT more versatile for future upgrades? That's a fancy way of saying, "We added a little more memory and maybe increased the processor power." BIG DEAL! Any upgrade today is already cheaper to what was created 3 years ago. Increasing memory is really all you can do, if you don't know what the future will bring and you have no specific, current plans. I was hoping for the following. What about a subwoofer output, like with the SONOS Amp? 2.1 channel is still very much a thing these days. What about giving customers the ability to set the digital output to "Fixed volume" while keeping the analog output on a variable volume output control. What about a digital in as well as a digital out? What about an IR out? Denon Heos has all this and it costs the same as a Sonos Connect.
