Thanks for this, exactly my vibe right now. My local library also rents a temperature laser gun that you can point at walls and windows in your house to identify where the cold is coming in! Found a full inch over my front door that was just... open!!

This is great! Right on time in my universe too because I'm facing a lot of new homeowner issues in my old fixer upper too. I've been looking for diy solutions all day and these are all on my to-do list. A few I had not even thought of so thank you, as per usual for the great content.

I really endorse sealing your windows! You can reuse some of your purchases year after year like the weather stripping you fitted. You didn't opt for insulation film, but if dismantled carefully you can use a sheet on a smaller window next year. Given yearly replacement costs combined with a slightly diminshed electricity bill I am breaking even on costs, but I am still happy for these solutions I am more comfortable. Do you have equalized electricity payments in Ontario? (I'm in Quebec).

Yes, I think next year I'll try the film! I might be wrong, but we only have equalized payments for gas use. Not too sure!

Wow! This is literally so informative I'm going to have to watch it again to absorb all this advice and wisdom. You are so adorable putting in that light fixture for the kitchen and burrowing under the sink to deal with the plumbing. Your partner has such a nice way of teaching and I love his accent, hehe. You guys are so sweet together. I love the baby wipe tip for smoothing out the caulk(?) for the windows, I've never tried that method; I have tried using a dip of fingertip into rubbing alcohol and then smoothing it that way (which works too but probably not as easy as baby wipes). Thanks so much for all of this info. I am guilty in the past of taking way too long to change out the filter for the air conditioner/furnace and it was sooooOOOoooo bad (especially with 3 dogs added to the mix). It's on the reminders now so no more nasty filters here either. Cheers!

I got so fed up with not having a ladder that I ordered one for delivery from Home Depot! Storage is annoying, but I keep it in my front closet and hang scarves off it when it's not in use LOL

If the weather warms up enough then you can also caulk the outside of your windows and doors. That doubles the draft prevention.

In some locations, people only have central heat. (Ex: TX older houses have separate window units for AC/cold air). We're mostly hot weather. So I've saved $ by closing all of the heater vents during those times and getting magnetic vent covers to prevent even more heat from coming in during our intense hot weather months. They sell them at Lowe's, etc. I also got some neat AC/window 1" insulation panels that come in a kit. Sometimes Walmart even carries those. So nice to slow down heat transfer, year round. They really work!
