Take it from a former dancer/gymnast, just because your child has the energy to go with no days off, her body does not. In her 40’s and 50’s she will need hip and knee replacements. And for the Olympics, if she gets injured once too close to the Olympic Trials and Games, she’s out. And there are 1000’s of gymnasts waiting for her to get hurt so they can go in her place. And it depends on what the team needs. If she’s amazing at one event but so are the other gymnasts she won’t get a spot unless she’s an all around. And that’s IF she gets to elite. Being stratospherically amazing at 7 doesn’t mean she still will be at 16. Kids will catch up to her. I know it’s harsh but that’s the reality of it. And even if she does beat all odds, what happened to don’t forget Zmeskal. Fell off the beam 10 seconds in and won nothing. She was the golden girl. Have her in gymnastics to be her best. Don’t count on the Olympics or college gymnastics.And look up Mary Lou Retton. Could barely get up and down stairs without getting knees and hips replaced. This isn’t a kid problem, it’s a parent problem. If you love your child, DON’T do this to her. She isn’t old enough to to understand the gravity of the situation. Just because you want your kid to be number one, doesn’t mean you should allow her to do it at any cost.

What a talented little doll, hopefully her parents watch what they say around her at such a young age. I know they SAY they let her be a kid, but all that talk about a career, and sacrifices, and winning is A LOT for a 7 year old.

The fact that her parents moved her at the age of 4 for her gymnastic career is crazy. Most don’t move to a well known gym until they are on avg 13 and even then most of them can peak way too soon. She is going to peak too early and/or be rattled with injuries by the time she hits her preteen/. 7 is way too early to commit to a gymnastic career. For example, I believe Simone biles was 6 when she started
@VIPShirlee03

I think her parents just want to provide a better gym environment for her to train in since in the Bahamas most likely don't have the proper equipment/ Coaching that can take her to the elite level. Brandy Johnson's Gymnastics is mainly for level 10 and trained only 1 notable elite gymnast which was Sydney Johnson-Scharf ( the daughter of Brandy Johnson). Ariana can stay there to develop her foundational skills and later on in the future if possible she can move to other gyms if she really want to get to the olympic/world champ level

There is no way to predict, at 7 years old, who is going to go to the Olympics or even who is going to go all the way to the Elite level. Yes, coaches can tell when gymnasts are really talented, but you can't tell whether all of the other things that have to happen along the way will fall into place. It's very concerning that her parents have already moved from one country to another to give her a chance to be that level of athlete. And it's not at all true that she can't miss a few days in the gym without falling behind! If you take two weeks off at that age, yeah, maybe there are some stretches or conditioning you should do to keep you in shape, but it's not that big of a deal, especially if it's in the off season. And that's two weeks, a few days is no problem at all. Those parents are saying they want to let her be a kid, but meanwhile they're taking it WAY too seriously for her age/level.

Happy to see a voice of reason, thank you. Such specialization at her age is not necessary nor ideal..Also any coach or parent speaking the "O" word or speaking of a " career" at this stage is a big red flag.

I really agree with you here. There are so many factors out of your control that happen between being 7 and the age/time to compete at the elite level or the Olympics. It’s good to practice and plan out a plan of action for each new level and maybe be thinking about optionals, but definitely not time to be pushing for college, elite, or the Olympics.

As a parent.... please run when people tell you your child is special in youth sports. Let the scores show for themselves not the money grab coaches. At level 4 you should not be training elite regardless of how much your child wants it. If she wants to play the long game of gymnastics as a career.... let her take it slow pre puberty.

Too much pressure, burnout, injuries.... Too many fears that people are having on her behalf. If that's wat she is enjoying at the moment. I commend the parents for giving it to her. Even if she gives it up. She would have developed the discipline many adults do not have but also enjoyed it while her heart was in love with it. Her parents are making it as child friendly as can be for a child eyeing elite sport. So i am rooting for her🤩

Based on past history, her chances are less than the gymnast who hasn't started to shine yet. Why? Because the 'young stars' are pushed too hard, peak far too early and suffer hoards of preventable injuries, ending their careers early. Rather its the 'late' bloomers (Simone Biles being one) who are the 'stars' later on. Simone never stood out as a junior. There's been talk of putting age limits on some elite skills and I think that would be the vest thing for the spirt. Just because a young gymnst 'can' do skills with incredible difficulty, doesn't mean it's in rheir best interests too, physically. The qualifying age for the Olympics needs to be pushed up to 18, to allow female gymnasts to go through puberty, it's safer for their bones and mental well being. With "older" stronger bodies, comes better gymnastics. The 'gymnasts need to be waif to succeed' has long been debunked. Not that it ever made sense, given male gymnasts weren't waifs - strong bodies makes moves wirh more power and difficulty. And female gymnasts like Simone have proven that a thousand times over

Great! But she DOES need to take some days off to give her muscles and body time to recover from those intense workouts. I've seen these strenuous workouts and what happens is that the child's body wears out at too early of an age and ends up injuring themselves. This happened to my nephew whose coach wore his body out from football practice. He even made his workout on his injury one too many times which prevented his ankle from healing properly. He steered my nephew into a long-tenured injury that negatively affected him in his young adulthood. He had to take a breather from athletics and it wouldn't be until later in life that my nephew became a Navel soldier in the Special Forces in United State Navy.

There’s no way to know that. It sets a kid up for serious disappointment to constantly say that. Do you know how many AMAZING 7-yr old gymnasts there are in the USA alone? It’s a lot of pressure. What if she wants to stop? She can’t, because she will disappoint her parents and her followers. She may grow a lot, get injured, have mental blocks, and the whole time worrying about not disappointing anyone. Can we just let her be a good gymnast without constantly saying “You’re going to the Olympics”?

Some complain it’s too much pressure at her age when in reality her parents are giving her a chance to be active outside of the home. Today many many children think being active is playing video games or tapping the keyboard on the phone. There’s parents who criticize she’s not getting the chance to be a young girl having fun like others her age. These parents usually fall into the category where they shove their lids into sports they hate and the parents drive it into the child they have to be diligent or they won’t make it in the world. My granddaughter started karate at 4 at 13 she told her mom she didn’t want to do it anymore so her mom just said she’s been proud of her for staying at t so long. The only rule was if you decide to try a sport she had to give it a year as you may start off not liking it but after a few months decide you do like it.
