The art of tattooing was once an integral part of tribal culture in the Philippines. Unfortunately, by the 1700s, the practice had all but fallen by the wayside due to the influence of invaders such as the Spanish Conquistadors.
Now, true Filipino tribal tattoos (called batek in the Philippines) are a rarity, and a Filipino tattoo artist will only ink these designs on clients of Filipino heritage. Many modern Filipinos frown on tattooing in general.
As far as the designs common to this style, Filipino tribal tattoos often draw inspiration from nature. Traditionally, an artist tattooed scenes and symbols highlighting aspects of the area where they themselves grew up. For example, if an artist grew up near a mountain range with a river running through it, symbols depicting mountains and rivers would likely feature in their designs.
Filipino tribal tattoos offered men protection, represented a tribe member’s bravery in battle, or signified their tribe status. As with many forms of indigenous tattooing, repetitive, meticulous patterns were commonplace, as opposed to the elaborate, photo-realistic images often seen in modern Western tattooing.
These patterns included circles, diamonds, as well as rudimentary shapes of dogs, men and eagles. Armbands were popular choices as far as placement, as were full chest pieces. All parts of the body except hands and feet were considered prime real estate for ink.
Below you’ll find a mix of both modern to tradtional tribal styles in addition to everything else inbetween.

Filipinos, read this book. "Filipino Tattoos Ancient to Modern" by Lane Wilcken. Not much of tattoo culture survived after Spanish successfully Christianized our ancestors. As Ilocano, we practiced tattooing but lost it. No copies of what design back then looked like. Only few tribes survived the practice to modern day. The Igorots or mountain people's of Luzon because they were never conquered by the Spanish and didn't practice Christianity. The head hunters of the mountains are different from low land natives therefore different design and meaning.

The majority of the people in the Philippines are of Austronesian descent who migrated from Taiwan during the Iron Age. They are called ethnic Filipinos. The largest Filipino ethnic groups include the Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, Bicolano, Kapampangan, Maranao, Maguindanao, and Tausug.

I've met Lane Wilcken in passing. He was coming in to he observe SAMOAN people getting tataus a few times and I've read his book, but I'm personal friends with the guys he references in his book. Its disturbing to learn from them that after Lane collected info from Samoan artists on what SAMOAN symbols mean. He took those meanings and made them Filipino meanings for their symbols and published it in his book "Filipino Tattoos Ancient to Modern". The ironic thing is Lane is half white and he's doing what white people are infamously known for - playing nice with people they need something from, gaining their trust and infiltrating. Once that's accomplished they exploit them. Its exactly what he did, he learned the Samoan tatatu history from real SAMOANS, applied his spin to it and published this info for Filipinos. Now Filipinos reference his book as their bible of tattoo symbol meanings. Although there is some good historical info in his book, the bulk of the tattoo meanings and ceremony are taken from the Samoan artists and cheifs he interviewed/met with. Why even meet with Samoans if you're studying Filipino traditions? To this day Lane is still cautious when around the Samoan tatau community. Even in his second book, I spoke to one of the Samoan guys he referenced and the old man told me he didnt even know who Lane was (he didnt remember him). Again, why do you keep coming around Samoans and asking about Samoan traditions when you're "expertise" is Filipino tattoos. The Samoans have a deep history, passed down through word of mouth from one generation to the next; Lane took whatever pieces of Samoan history he liked (spun it), connected to it to Filipinos and is now attempting to connect and mix the traditions. I just want to say I love the Filipino community...good people. I wish Filipinos were more proud to represent themselves without taking from other cultures (specifically Poly cultures). I notice this more in Fil-Ams, not the Filipinos in the Philippines. I have friends that are Filipino and there's so many things to be proud of. Why is there such a need to look or connect with Polynesian cultures? Why not rep Filipinos without having to say "I'm part Hawaiian", "I'm part Guamanian"? I just don't get it.

To all the people that says this is samoan or maori, you're right in some form but this are the modern ones and the ones that are still done in the Philippines by the tribal people of kalinga were the one done hundreds of years ago. The ones in 1:36 and 1:44 seem to be inspired by them so yes there are some actual traditional tattoo here. And the thing is they are very similar because we are all Austronesian people (polynesians are of austronesian ancestry). The kalinga in the northern Philippines and the pintados(that's what the westerners called them) of the south has their own style but not as prominent as the maori because the Spanish destroyed that culture and tradition when they colonized. In fact when the Spaniards first came into the Philippines they called it islas de los pintados (Islands of the painted people). Heck even the process of traditional tattooing in polynesia and the Philippines are very similar. If you actually want traditional tattoos from the Philippines look up the kalinga people or one tribe tattoo if you want modern ones (they're the ones who actually do some research)

Yes, these are heavily "Samoan & Maori" influenced designs and symbols. The problem with "modern" Filipino tattoos is that its mixing/taking from other cultures and being misrepresented as coming from their culture (in this case Filipino). This form of modern tattooing contributes to the erasure of not only the deep & beautiful Samoan & Maori heritage but also convolutes the real history of Filipinos. Copying cutural symbols/adding made up symbols and mixing them in with traditional Filipino symbols is still plagarizing & fake. Modern tattoo artists mixing SAMOAN, FIJIAN & MAORI traditional tataus and calling it "Polynesian tatau" or "fusion tattoos" for a fashion show to look coooool is sooo NOT original...or respectful! IMITATION is (usually) the sincerest form of flattery, but not when it's done in the manner of STEALING and LYING about its origin and history.

It’s a lot faster from Asia Anybody with a boat can sail to those island but migration/ hoping island 🏝 to island from early humans came from Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia then Polynesia Remember tattoos are influenced by what we see in our environment. So Its highly possible that what’s in Asia is the same in Polynesia kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGiaZ2qwZ7iosKM

@@sefamoa7877 i agree to some extent. In terms of design there will always be similarities just as maori, samoan and marquesan has their similarities, filipino tattoos won't be as distinctly unique as say japanese because we do come from similar ancestry main difference being polynesian tattooing was allowed to evolve while filipino tattooing was killed. If you dont think there shouldn't be similarities you can look at the tattoos done by the kalinga people, they live in a remote village up the mountains so they don't have as much contact to modern Polynesian tattoos. The biggest obstacle with restoring Filipino traditional tattooing is that the art has been lost. Which is why the modern version might be unintentionally stealing from other cultures I think the biggest mistake that filipino tattoo artists does in terms of designing the tattoo is not following the old designs of authentic filipino tattoo. The kalingas from the philippines still follow their old designs which is why their tattoos doesn't look as close modern to polynesian tattoos.

Agreed. I read Lane's book. It was poorly edited and all over the place. I think the point he's arguing is that there's a cultural connection across the Polynesian islands, and I'm like obviously. Why are we even spending chapters on this subject? I'm like, "Stay within the realms of Filipino culture man." But even more disappointing, when he did get to the Filipino content of his book, it mostly centered around the northern people (ilokanos).

@@prejo tell that to all the Filipinos in Cali and Hawaii who are covered up in 99% poly tribal and the 1% filipino part where they mix their star with poly tribal but then go around saying "Look at my filipino tribal" Filipinos out here covered in poly tribal which is crazy because they have their own markings and culture and it's a beautiful one but they rather try to be something else and this mostly happens out here in Cali and Hawaii.

@@doggpound9319 Modern Filipino tattoos have a wavy flow to them. What motifs are they using? Are the motifs specifically and designs Filipino? There is literally no one on the east cost that does traditional.

Yaboy Ndat We’re technically both due to our history with being part of the Spaniards and the label Americans gave us when they first discovered us. The Philippines is just weird in geography since we belong to South East Asia but were apart of the Spanish East Indies a long time ago.

Real Filipino Facts: I've met Lane Wilcken in passing. He was coming in to observe SAMOAN people getting tataus a few times and I've read his book, but I'm personal friends with the guys he references in his book. Although there is some good historical info in his book, the bulk of the tattoo meanings and ceremony are taken from the Samoan artists and chiefs he interviewed/met with. Why even meet with Samoans if you're studying Filipino traditions? To this day Lane is still cautious when around the Samoan tatau community. Even in his second book, I spoke to one of the Samoan guys he referenced and the old man told me he didnt even know who Lane was (he didnt remember him). Again, why do you keep coming around Samoans and asking about Samoan traditions when your "expertise" is Filipino tattoos. The Samoans have a deep history, passed down through word of mouth from one generation to the next; Lane took whatever pieces of Samoan history he liked (spun it), connected it to Filipinos and is now attempting to connect and mix the traditions.

Well Filipinos really did have tribal tattoos for a long time but most died out. I’m proud to be Filipino and I think many Fil-ams try to connect to others besides representing themselves because many people push them aside. Often times not seen as “Asian enough” to fit in with the Chinese, Koreans, or other mainland Asians. Some even say Filipinos are “dirty islanders”. And so they hop on the Islander wagon only to realize that although they live on an island, the culture isn’t the same. At least not since colonization. Philippines is a country of thousands of small islands, consisting of hundreds of languages and tribes, but much of the culture and language was lost from colonization. Filipinos even in the Philippines will say “I’m part Spanish” even if they aren’t. We are proud people but also want to fit in and connect with others I guess. This is my experience.

They aren't necessarily samoan. We have tribes in the Philippines that date back and not only that the Philippines has a very diverse and influenced people so I wouldn't be surprised if some of these seemed to be influenced by other groups

FeddyTownUce Tuigamala-Lologo-Tasele Most of these are Maori or Maori inspired. But there's too much migration. Filipinos typically have totally diverse genealogy, myself included. Tattoo markings in the Philippines also varied by region, tribe, etc.

Kullen Willard all these tattoos are modern on style if you look up my people's traditional tattoo called The tatau or the pe'a that will be its original form of these designs from modern society, I'm just saying its not right to state something is your culture when its obviously not, I can agree maybe 10 of these tattoos on this video are Filipino designs, these used to stand for and mean something to my people now it has been perverted by all these foreigners.

FeddyTownUce Tuigamala-Lologo-Tasele Yes you're right these are modern. & I don't agree with someone getting any of these markings if they are not culturally aware. I have a piece that is predominately Pinoy, but within research I found motif's that I PERSONALLY identified with from other areas of the Oceania and the rest is exclusively Mindanao related. I also found it was extremely difficult to trace your genealogy. If you have any culturally representative markings and you're from the United States id think you'd agree?
