The violence of World War II left nations traumatized and children abandoned, with no one to care for them. For many, the only option was an orphanage. But Hermann Gmeiner, a charismatic and innovative social rebel, knew there was a better way. His idea was simple but revolutionary for the times: recreate the experience of a family for the child who has no one.
On 25 April 1949, Mr. Gmeiner and a small group of like-minded pioneers formed ‘Societas Socialis’ - the organization that later grew to become SOS Children’s Villages. Hardly anyone could have foreseen that their concept of quality care for all children would spread to over 130 countries and territories.
70 years later, we honor their pioneering spirit and idea, which has gone on to transform the lives of millions of children and young people all over the world.
