It's under threat of civil war. Meaning that a civil war somewhere in that region may cause mass migration.

MOST OF THE STATEMENTS THE NARRATOR SAID ABOUT UGANDA ARE NOT TRUE.
@DiaryofaMuzungu

Uganda isn't under constant threat of a civil war - I know, I live here. The film paints the grimmest possible picture of Katwe, even the pastor narrating looks glum (not your typical Ugandan, believe me! The thing about Ugandans is most have wonderful smiles, regardless of their circumstances). The narrator says that the areas surrounding Katwe aren't much better - absolutely not true. I'm sitting in a very smart internet cafe 1km away....

what do you expect when western media talks about countries in africa. I went to uganda to visit family and its not as poor as people think.

Uganda has very poor areas, and many middle-class areas that could be anywhere in the world. The growing divide between haves and have nots is worrying tho

my old roommate who is from Africa told me that many times westerners try to paint Africa as a sad and poor dim place ,but she told me it's not true. She told me that even if you don't have the most money or best clothes people still find a reason to be thankful and happy.
@Effusive777

@13ritalove Yes, the media always tries to paint things a certain way.. it's kinda like "puttin' a 10 on it" - making something as extra as can to make the story "better" in the person's eyes.. Just like everyone is shocked when they go to America, because it's NOT like the movies and TV make it seem at all. It's good to talk to people that have actually been somewhere, if you can't go yourself... and now you can watch people actually there on you tube! But the movie is still veryyy inspirational. PS- This couple "Kara and Nate" on you tube have been to almost every country, and they make good quality videos on youtube, and there are mannny others.

+Willy Lukwago No. I'm not from India. I'm from America. The game of chess is believed to have evolved from a game called Chaturanga. The game moved west either due to trade routes or areas of India being conquered Muslims at the time. The Iranians then called the game Shatranj, which found its way to medieval Europe by way of Muslim expansion and Norman conquest. It's in Europe that chess would eventually become the game we know today. The game may have when to Africa because of Muslim expansion, but it did not originate in the country itself.

I DON'T LIKE THIS STATEMENT THAT TO BE AN AFRICAN IS THAT YOU ARE AN UNDER DOG. IT IS NOT TRUE MAYBE THE NARRATOR OR WHOEVER PROPOSED THIS STATEMENT TO BE PART OF THE TRAILER OR MOVIE FEELS THAT IS AN UNDER DOG HIMSELF. IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO CHANGE IT OR EDIT OUT DO IT PLESE IT DOESN'T SOUND GOOD BECAUSE IT IS NOT TRUE.
@prisrdz4639
@prisrdz4639 9 жыл бұрын
An "under dog" means someone with so much hidden raw talent that everyone overlooks because of their looks, income, education, and ways of life. I bet you a million dollars that there are at least a one thousand under dogs, in Ugnada alone, with talent that goes by unnoticed because some rich, white kid has more money than they do. That is what an under dog is. Someone willing to prevail despite what others tell them, someone with guts willing to challenge any obstacles, big or small.

These type of visuals are very deliberate. This keeps the donations flowing. Showing more affluent, prosperous areas will not play well into their agenda.

"To be African is to be an underdog in the world, to be Ugandan is to be an underdog in Africa, to be in Katwe is to be an underdog in Uganda and to be a girl living in Katwe is to be an underdog in Katwe," sounds like white supremacy, chauvenism and fallacy. Thanks for the misrepresentation.

what!? to be African is to be an underdog in the world? who told u that? hahhhhhhhhha it's true that when a wiseless person is walking on the street the wisdom bypasses him/her and so everyone he/she sees he/she calls them wiseless. meaning if u're underdog keep it to yourself don't dare put Africans in your basket because their dignity,wisdom and values do not go together with your underdogness ,lol they are kings &queens,prince &princesses ,you who think u're underdog to anyone or any society be it urself,don't dare use ur underdog on Africans

Somehow it feels like the narrator is exaggerating just to make the documentary to sound entertaining to a certain group audience...it's creepy...i wish this African Documentaries can be narrated by Africans themselves then maybe they will sound convincing to me.

*Race hoax.* Phiona Mutesi's world Elo rating is 1622. The World Chess Federation gave her the title Woman Candidate Master, even though the minimum Elo to qualify for that title is 2000. Phiona Mutesi did _not_ earn that title through skilled play. It was given to her on the account of a politically correct reach-down. The poor black girl from an African slum got unduly favorable consideration because of her race and economic circumstances.
@causeyt1
@causeyt1 8 жыл бұрын
No one, including Kasparov, Carlson et al deserve the title of Master more than Phiona. Elo of 1200 under her conditions is harder and requires more skilled play than 2500 under the privilege most of us live in. Being a chess master is more than your current rating.
@AnthonyAllGood
@AnthonyAllGood 8 жыл бұрын
Well she got it for her performance in the olympiad so i guess there she achieved a performance rating of around 2000 by playing on board 1 and 2. maybe she doesnt play in a bunch of rated tournaments and thats why her rating hasnt increased to her standards yet. plus a wcm doesnt need a specific elo rating to get the title necessarily. if her performance rating for the tournament was up to the standards then that may have been enough. its not as strict as the im or gm titles. i think she deserved it anyway also disregarding her background. she can play chess quite well after all.
