(71) Aaron's Storyline - 10th December 2009 (8pm)

Episode Date: Thursday 10th December 2009. 8pm episode.
Summary: Reeling after Aaron's attempt to kiss him, Adam questions his friend and unable to handle the accusations, Aaron exits the car. Refusing to let the situation drop, Adam follows him and carelessly questions Aaron's sexuality. Desperate to erase the previous five minutes, Aaron gets back into the car and with his blood boiling, he recklessly drives towards Adam, who dodges the vehicle. John and Moira are concerned when Adam returns home limping but he doesn't tell them the full story. As they quiz him, though, Holly returns home. Adam's defensive as he's interrogated by his parents and further irritated when Holly believes that he and Aaron rowed about her. Disbelieving his story, Holly questions Adam but she's left confused by his sudden, strong disliking of Aaron. Elsewhere, Paddy's alarmed when Aaron snaps at him for being concerned about the cut on his head. Later, when Chas finds Aaron in the village with his head in his hands, he's quick to tell her to get lost. With that, he runs off. Letting off some steam on the bridge, Aaron's shocked when Lizzie finds him. Still angry about what happened earlier in the evening, Aaron pushes past her, sending her bag into the water and causing Lizzie to fall to the ground. Full of fear and self-loathing, Aaron's in turmoil as he reflects on the night's unexpected turn of events. Will he face up to his feelings?

Aaron was so terrified. Like most gay lads he's probably thought about it all his life and never tried in real life. To be rejected your first time is embarassing. And now knowing about Gordin he ust have felt so disgusted in himself

Poor Aaron, he was obviously shocked himself. Being in so much pain and didn't know what to do but to run away from everything. Plus the guilt piling up from hurting others around him.

@@jamiepender4271 I think Adam going on the offensive straight away didn't help and let's be honest it did come across as slightly homophobic when Adam refused to get back into the car as he didn't want Aaron to come onto him again which kinda felt like Adam was implying that Aaron is a sexual predator which is a gay stereotype I would have been about 12 at the time and had I have known that I was queer it would have made me not want to tell anyone if that's how friends react Luckily I have come out as Pansexual and no one was negative they didn't know what a Pansexual was until me and my sister explained that it is more about who the other person is (personality) and not about what the other person is ( gender,race, even age as long as its within legal boundaries) and nothing involving kitchen utensils But was Adam's reaction realistic at the time... yes Watching it now does it make for a comfortable viewing ... no Queer progress is extremely slow in british soaps and is the main reason I don't watch them anymore If you want to see queer happiness I recommend a Thai TV show called Bad Buddy the series

Wow - Danny Millerwas pretty awesome. The story he was telling just with his eyes was amazing. Adam's confusion really came to the fore as the clip went on. I think Holly's comments have really given him something to think about. You can tell that this has hit him completely out of left field and now he's wondering why he didn't see it coming. "save" I liked that Robert was there for Aaron don't get me wrong but it wasn't a happy relationship that Emmerdale can be proud of as they showcase what a healthy, happy queer relationship looks like in fact it ironically managed to achieve the opposite pretty much The show could never decide what kinda man would suit Aaron without stereotyping As would Aaron prefer a muscular bad guy who is just a bully type Or a bad boy with a heart type (which is probably what the show thought Robert was) Or a nerdy dweeb who Aaron can control as the alpha male (Jackson or Finn spring to mind) Maybe it came down to the character of Aaron not being planned out for long term or maybe the direction they wanted to take with Aaron was a conflict with Danny

Watching this in December 2023 and my opinion on this segment hasn't changed since when I watched it on TV at the time I get that Adam as a straight man would realistically act like this but I still think that Adam was far too hostile towards Aaron when Aaron went in for the kiss Considering the kiss didn't actually happen it was just an attempt in my opinion Adam came across as kinda mean Sure act surprised even act confused but to go on the offensive immediately didn't really make much sense for Adams character and to then refuse to get back into the car because he didn't want Aaron to come onto him again was a little bit offensive as it kinda felt like Adam was calling Aaron a predator which is a gay stereotype Whilst it's good that Adam quickly became Aaron's biggest male cheerleader in life it doesn't make his initial reaction ok And if we're being honest looking at Aaron's entire life the fact that Adam was the only person to show Aaron any form of love (even if it was just brotherly love) just makes Aaron's character appear more broken His mum Chas was too busy with Carl and any other man who came along and we were far from the appearance of Liv his sister and whilst Paddy was a good substitute dad Aaron has said on multiple occasions that he feels like Paddy only took Aaron on out of pity and Aaron's biological father showed Aaron the wrong kind of "love" So Aaron's age and the teenage hormones flying through him mixed with Adam being genuinely nice to him it seemed kinda set up for Aaron to get mixed signals and attempt to kiss Adam Also the way it was set up I initially thought it was going to be Adam going in for the kiss and maybe Aaron would then respond by kissing him back Even now Aaron has never had his version of the PatPran love story and his 2 biggest relationships have been more about the spectacle With Jackson it was rocky and led to Aaron killing his boyfriend in an assisted suicide storyline so already not the best start but his next notable relationship seemed like it only existed for the shock value as it was a returning character from the past (someone I'd heard about but not seen on screen as I wasn't old enough back when he was on screen) and Robert Sugden returned and robron was created And it seemed to be a ploy to get the people who remember Robert as a ladies man talking about the fact he was now having a sexual affair with Aaron and that relationship was nothing for the show to be proud of either but Aaron and Robert were in a better place towards the end The show could never work out what kinda man would suit Aaron the best and it's not like Aaron wasn't stereotyped on occasion so I wouldn't have been surprised if they were discussing Aaron's love life in a similar way and coming up with things like "does Aaron want a Mr muscles gangster type a bully without a cause" or " a bad boy with a heart of gold" which is probably what Robert was supposed to be or " does Aaron want a nerdy dweeb he has full control of in and out of the bedroom" maybe they didn't know if Aaron is a dominant or a submissive or like PatPran maybe Aaron is versatile Personally I thought Jackson was too meh while Robert was the extreme opposite and with both relationships it was inevitable that they weren't meant to last long (Ryan Hawley left his role but they didn't bother thinking about a recast as it's not the first time Robert was recast the fans would have gotten used to a new face eventually and Aaron and Robert could've still been together now as he wouldn't have had to be written out) It does make people think if weirdly Adam was the right person for Aaron

Weirdly no considering the fuss that Adam made from it Also when I watched it the time on TV I initially thought that Adam was the one who was going to lean in for the kiss and maybe Aaron would kiss him back then a couple of months of them being awkward and not hanging out together and people would start to notice the weirdness around them and that's when the story gets going I also remember at the time being annoyed that Adam felt the need to try to tell people about Aaron I would have been like 12 years old at the time and still knew that outing someone before they are ready isn't ok
