It's not necessary to mark the drive shaft flange- drive shafts are balanced to themselves, not to the transmission or rear end.

You probably know this but the handbrake is a "fly off" type: You press the button on the end when you pull the brake ON to secure it in position. Release the brake by pulling back slightly, the ratchet releases without touching the button and you can just let go. Excellent for hillclimb starts or the Brooklands test hill ;-) Steering rack is Adwest (I think?) and very similar to the one on the Jaguar XJ of similar vintage. (quite a few parts are common with the XJ6) I think only the valve was altered so it's a bit less 'assisted'- feeling and more sporty than on the XJ. - can't remember where I read that.
@AstonTorslanda
@AstonTorslanda 6 ай бұрын
I hadn't even sat in an Aston until this one. I knew the rack was Adwest but not much more than that, no idea about the handbrake or cars with similar parts.. Any help we can get sourcing information or ideas for spares is very much appreciated. Might be a while before it sees any hill starts though.

The two blower motors are wired so they run in opposite directions (It makes sense when you see how the housings are mirror images of each other) - hence one has what you'd expect to be the negative and positive wires reversed while the other is "normal" I found this out when troubleshooting my car a while back.

Many engines are installed with the exhaust manifolds already on. If you wait till the engine is out you will have better access to undo the nuts.

Couldn’t help notice just now, although the inner wings etc look shot to hell, the springs and shock assembly’s look pretty good or is it a trick of the light?😬
@AstonTorslanda
@AstonTorslanda 6 ай бұрын
Actually, it's not the light, we reckon they are relatively new, maybe put on since the engine was rebuilt. That could be 34 years ago but never used. The front inner wings have surface rust. Although it doesn't look like it, they are pretty good, no holes, not even thinning. We plan to clean up the inside of the engine bay soon to give us something to feel good about.. ;-)

Hi. I have a V8 saloon from 1977 and the engine mounts have to be replaced in the near future. Whats your opinion? Could it be done with the engine in the car?My workshop manual is not very helpful with that. How did you rech them?
@AstonTorslanda
@AstonTorslanda 6 ай бұрын
My son, removed them. He said it was pretty easy to unbolt them. I'm sure you could unbolt them and then hoist the engine, possibly jack it up. I say possibly jack it up because it's an aluminium sump, so you might need to find a solid jacking point. We're not AM people but most cars have the same issues. I'll speak to Alex. DM us and we can take some pictures for you. Thanks for watching..
@AstonTorslanda
@AstonTorslanda 6 ай бұрын
Hi! Its Alex here, i definitely think that you could get away with jacking the engine up or lifting it up with a hoist (if you have one that is) one side then the other, its just two bolts holding essentially a big rubber hockey puck. Id say its pretty do-able. Only think is you may have to unbolt the air-conditioning to move it slightly.
@hias7568
@hias7568 6 ай бұрын
@@AstonTorslanda Hello and many thanks for your answers. Good to hear, that its doable. One last question, because you wrote that i should unbolt the air-conditioning... Did you remove the mounts from above? I dont see at the moment, how to reach them from there *headscratch*. Anyway, good luck with your restauration. Been through such a project long time ago with my MGA.
@AstonTorslanda
@AstonTorslanda 6 ай бұрын
Hi! I took the mounts out from top and bottom as there is a bolt on each end, its fairly hard to see them and i had the wheels off when getting at them, with regards to air conditioning, im not certain you have to remove it as it wasnt on the car when i unbolted the mounts but it looks like it would be easier with it out the way. Thanks for watching!

@AstonTorslanda
@AstonTorslanda 6 ай бұрын
We need to get the car stable first. We'll replace the sills and floors and rebuild the rear boot section. Then we'll get it sand blasted. If we sent it off to be stripped now, it would probably fold..

after working on these. the torqueflite is just kinda crappy and really saps any performance from the engine. its just old tech. i wonder if fitting a newer version (with 4 speed) or something would be better or maybe a toyota a340 box. but it would be worth investigating cutting the gearbox crossmember and making it removable or just positioned back further so you can remove gearbox from the bottom instead of pulling that cover off each time. same with tailshaft.

The 727 torque flight was and still is one of the best automatic trans ever installed in a car. Have a think about those gigantic Chrysler products with torquey V8 engines and never a problem. You can buy a proper performance 727 anywhere in the US ( B& M etc etc ) and it's been that way since the late 1950's. Power sapping was never an issue with Torque flights and in the early 1980's there was a particular model of Mercedes,the 450SEL 6.9 which could smash it's own gear box if maltreated enough. There were more than a few refitted with 727's.
@AstonTorslanda
@AstonTorslanda 6 ай бұрын
@Mercmad I'm with you. The Torque flight is an amazing box. I'm not a US car specialist but Alex and I watch every US car show going. Those gearboxes are solid and we will keep it. @elliottb7009, everyone to there own. Thanks for the suggestion of a newer box. We want to keep this car as original as we can, with maybe some better rust protection and a few other things which won't compromise it's originality. It's never going to have aToyota gearbox, it's not a restomod..and I'm not thinking too much about taking the box out again soon. We will replace those old transmission tunnel bolts with stainless. So the next person can take the cover off easily, not by having to use Coblat drill bits. Thank you both for your comments and support.
