i"ve never heard of these kits....ever....thank God for youtube. I knew i should have something prepared but never like this. I'm going to get stared on our kits right away. I think this kind of preparedness should be taught regularly. Between covid, flooding, fires, freezing temps and natural disasters we need to be ready for these emergencies as much as we possibly can. This is the first vid I've seen for ppl with allergies. Now i need to find one for people who have pre existing conditions or need to carry special medication.

Someone told me she put a kit together and literally had an emergency the following week and was ready because of the kit. That’s great you’re going to put one together. Just think of what you’ll need for 3 days if you don’t have the regular access to things. I started with prepping water for 1 day. Then I did food for 1 day. Then I moved to water for 3 days. Then food for 3 days. Then 1 week. Then 2 weeks.

We used to do a hurricane kit every year when we lived in Hawaii. Because we lived in-land far from the inundation zone or any streams that could have flash floods and in a new house designed to resist hurricane winds and fitted with storm shutters, our kit was designed for sheltering in place while the power grid was down instead of evacuating to a public shelter. We always hired a crew to trim the coconuts from our two coconut palms when a predicted hurricane path showed we might get hit with a hurricane in a few days. We always set the clusters of coconuts beside our mail box and plenty of neighbors dropped by to get some. Our regular pantry always had a month's supply of canned food and Ramen and some cases of bottled water and we kept rotating/replacing the canned goods as we used them throughout the year. We had an assortment of manual and gas-powered trimming tools in our garage for cutting up torn branches or damaged tree trunks after a hurricane passed. We also had an extension ladder and some blue tarps in our garage just incase we ever had some roof damage. We always topped up our vehicles' fuel tanks several days before a hurricane was predicted to hit. Only one hurricane ever came close enough to damage some of our landscape plants and only once was the power grid down for about three days following an earthquake, so we considered ourselves lucky. Our plastic tub of hurricane supplies contained a lot of flameless lighting devices, one NOAA weather radio, lots of batteries, an assortment of non-prescription meds and first aid materials, plastic rain ponchos, a small bottle of water purification tablets, some trail bars, some insect repellant and some sunscreen. We always inspected that tub at the start of hurricane season and replaced anything that was past its best date. Several of our closest neighbors had gas grills and, if the local power grid was ever severely damaged, we planned to get with them for an after-storm street party to cook and serve any chilled/frozen meat and seafood before it spoiled.

I used to have them separated by meal. But when we practiced by actually going through this for 72 hours, it felt very rationed. Of course, it's rationed. But to alleviate that feeling, I made it per person for the preferences and so that we feel it was "special". lol

Some really good points here, thanks for sharing. A few observations ( not criticisms ) : 1. A lot of space and wight is it being taken up with original packaging. Try to strip items down to the very minimum. 2. Try to avoid glass containers. Even well packed and separated glass items can break and potentially spill / contaminate other items. 3. Include some wet wipes. Always super useful. 4. Include some salt / pepper / spice packets to liven foods items up. 5. Sounds contradictory to point 4 but be watchful of high sodium items that may be thrust provoking. 6. Allergies are always super important. I have a child with a nut allergy so to eliminate the possibility of accidental use or cross contamination our food box doesn't have any nut items in it. Also, we include an epi-pen in the box just in case. 7. Unless for medical reasons, the niceties of veterinarian / vegan lifestyles maybe have to take second place to utility / shared resources in a bug out situation. 8. Switch to a non see through box that locks if possible. Sunlight can degrade some food items and you may not want others knowing what you have. 9. Throw in some honey. It lasts forever and adds lots of taste to otherwise bland items. 10. Finally, include some trach bags for waste. Thanks.
@SimplyCherie3 жыл бұрын
This is amazing! Thank you. The only problem I was debating with the original packaging is labeling the packages. But I suppose I can take the time to do that. For glass containers, my problem is that we are in Arizona, so I have tried to not have plastic because of the heat. I don't even want to store it in the garage, but I chose food that would be ok here. I don't keep any of my long term food storage in the garage, which poses a challenge in a city with no basements! Aaarrggghh. Love your other suggestions, I will get on them!

I made mini pkg of powder milk to mix w water for a glass worth. I packed carnation instant breakfast pkg and will mix them with the glass of milk. I also add hot cocoa mix pkg which substitute for powder milk and add in a pkg of carnation breakfast mix (vanilla). This gives you lots of vitamins, protein and carbs. Great for stressful situation. No need to heat cocoa- just think of it as choc milk. //I’m surprised at how many nut things you have in there when you have a family member w allergies. Wouldn’t they have a reaction being close to you when you are eating them? Pop tarts are another good snack item with good shelf life. Nice kit!! Ps tea bags in the event you find or can heat water.

@SimplyCherie2 жыл бұрын
I would put half that are nutritious and the calories needed. Then I would put the other half as favorite snacks and food. I don't remember if I said it in this video or maybe another video, but I actually go through our 72-hour kit every September. Like we eat the stuff in there mostly because we want to test everything and before the expiration dates. My first bin was great because it had Oreos but after 3 days, I saw how much nutrition we didn't have. Someone said I don't have enough nutrition in this bin but I think I do. What I would do is pack for even just 24 hours. Plan to eat through it one day with your picky eater. Then you will get an idea of how it will work. Note what worked and what didn't work. Then you can make the substitutions and try again.
