RE: Air Canada clip - This looks like a common case of airborne brake cooling. It's clearly a hot day in the video and AMS is notorious for long taxi times. On the Boeing 787-9, once the weight-on-wheels sensors no longer detect that the aircraft is on the ground, the landing gear doors automatically open regardless of landing gear lever position. The gear will have been left extended for a pre-calculated period of time to allow sufficient brake cooling. The aircraft will have degraded climb performance, increased fuel burn & will be restricted to flying at VLE until the gear is retracted. This is far more likely than there being an issue with the gear as there is no indication on the video that the aircraft didn't continue its transatlantic flight
@CapStar3623 ай бұрын
@@JxH the brakes automatically apply to stop the wheels before retracting into the bays. if any of the brakes also were inop, that wheel is spinning freely, thus leaving the gear down gives them time to spin down safely before retracting.
@amytysoe22923 ай бұрын
thanks for this, i didn't know about the doors being separately controlled to the actual gear so i thought the dooes opening like that was indicative of a failed attempt to bring the gear up
@rtbrtb_dutchy41833 ай бұрын
This won’t be for brake cooling. Brake cooling is only a problem with smaller aircraft that have quick gate turns. A 787 simply can’t be turned around that quickly. This is likely that one of the brakes is inop. You have to wait 2 minutes for that wheel to spin down to a stop, before you can retract the gear.
@CapStar3623 ай бұрын
@@JxH no i didnt, it has little to nothing to do with brake cooling. You specifically mentioned taxiing and low speeds. You call takeoff speeds low? The brakes apply automatically when Gear Up is toggled by the handle to stop the wheel rotation, so therefore, the wheels are turning at several thousand RPM, they need to stop rotating to a much safer speed to fully spinning down before retracting. Thus, the gear is left down for 2 minutes to achieve this if any single brake unit or more than one is INOP but still cleared to fly. I know who I replied to, and he can read the notification they get as well since its his original comment, ANY reply, regardless of who is tagged, it notifies AviationUpclose as well. Air Canada reminds us that any time we find ourselves saying; "The plane isn't climbing very well today" or "We aren't getting very good speed today", it is time to go through the checklist items to see what was missed.

@@petepeterson5337 yes or it could be that the weight and balance was done incorrectly resulting in the wrong Vspeeds and min required runway length. Airbus has this cool system that checks aircraft acceleration and compares it to the calculated values and warns the pilot if something is out of whack. It might just save someone one day
@petepeterson53372 ай бұрын
@@sblack48 It seems like in 2024 the airbus feature you described should be available for even single engine piston planes. Of course the pilot has to understand how wind shear and other factors can invalidate the results of an acceleration/airspeed warning system. I would love that in my plane; it is disconcerting to keep accelerating towards a fence with faith and gut feel that it will make it. At Fullerton Airport (California) there is a fence at the end with a giant orange and white checker banner. I tell people it would be more relaxing if the fence at the end had a giant mural of a cow pasture. All honest pilots I know will admit to taking off, climbing or cruising with an incorrect configuration (gear, flaps etc) at some point.
@sblack482 ай бұрын
@@petepeterson5337 It is easier to integrate into an advanced cockpit that already has an FMS database that knows the weight of the airplane, runway length and slope and has access to airspeed and accelerometer data etc. This feature is simply manipulating existing data. Few piston singles will have this data available.

The Air Canada 787 crew retracted the gear at a very normal time. The gear doors opened and closed. For many videos, I though about commenting on your use of "too late" in many of your descriptions. The word "Too late" has a serious impact behind it. There's no coming back from it. If you arrived at the bus stop "too late"... you missed the bus. If you got "too close"... you collided. If you land "too early"... you hit dirt, not numbers.
