One of the other small things is that the installer automatically copied my camera data across the planes after installation. It’s the small things like that which make Fenix so great! If the installer didn't do it, I'd have to start the sim load in each variant individually, make custom camera cfgs for every plane, close the sim, and copy the camera backup file across the different types. Saved me a solid 25-35 minutes of work.

Im wondering about the floating you mentioned. Why is it like that? isnt it the opposite due to less induced drag, which means less ground effect as a whole, making it float less?
@HarryFortyTwo3 күн бұрын
i would assume more ground effect. the sharklets reduce the shortcut route between upper and lower side of the wing, so any effect caused by air under the wing doing something special close to ground without having an easy way to the upper side (or vice versa) will be exacerbated. But thats just gray theory - experiments will clearly show it.
@Treadstone73 күн бұрын
In ground effect, wing vortices cannot fully develop, therefore reducing induced drag, leaving more lift. With winglets, wing vortices are reduced even more, reducing induced drag and increasing lift (especially in ground effect) additionally. Ground effect is the result of naturally reduced induced drag due to proximity to the ground. Therefore I don't get why you think more ground effect requires more induced drag... It's the opposite. That's why winglets make the aircraft float more in the flare because they reduce drag in general.
@LiftFormula3 күн бұрын
@@Treadstone7 @HarryFortyTwo i might just be stupid now or confused, but isnt ground effect it self the effect of wingtip vortices having nowhere to go, which will increase the lift component when youre less than 1 x wingspan above the runway? When you leave ground effect, you also experience an increase in coefficient of lift until you leave the ground effect and the vortices doesnt hit the ground anymore? That is why im confused, due to no winglets = more induced drag from the wingtip vortices = more vortices hitting the ground, which to me tells that winglets would make you float less?
@Treadstone73 күн бұрын
@@LiftFormulaI think it's mainly confusion 😉 First of all, yes, ground effect is due to wing vortices not being able to develop. Simplified at least. wing vortices themselves create induced drag. That's why we have winglets, to reduce the vortices. Because the vortices cannot fully develop near to the ground, their induced drag also doesn't develop completely, creating more lift. That's essentially, what ground effect is. If you leave ground effect, wing vortices fully develop, creating more drag, effectively reducing the lift component. There have been accidents, especially with overloading of the aircraft and/or high density altitude involved, where the pilot attempted to take off and made it into the air but as soon as he climbed out of ground effect, struggled to climb and crashed because the lift was not sufficient out of ground effect. So, because of winglets, vortices are reduced, therefore ground effect is enhanced and the aircraft is more likely to float. More vortices means more drag, first of all.

Tried to Google this, but didn't come up with much....roughly what is the percentage of A320 and A321 CEOs that now have sharklets fitted out in the wild? Are there any airlines that have an all sharklet fleet, or no sharklets at all? From memory, I haven't seen tons of sharklet fitted CEOs in the UK from with British Airways or EasyJet, but I'm not in the industry, so I don't see them every day.
@A330Driver4 күн бұрын
I don't know of any percentages, but I think most have been retrofitted with sharklets and for the past ten years all new ones had them. I'd need to guess numbers, but I'd say it's at least some 70 or 80% nowadays.
@mdhazeldine4 күн бұрын
@@A330Driver Interesting. I just did a bit more digging online and the sharklets came out in 2012. Airbus offered retrofits on some of the later models that had wings designed to take them already, and then later offered retrofits to older models, but those required more extensive upgrade work, and it seems like some airlines didn't bother (for example BA). If true, then looking at the airfleets website and sorting by delivery date, that would indicate that perhaps as much as 30% of BA's A320-200s (delivered before 2012) don't have sharklets still. I think most of Easyjet's do, but I've seen a few photos of kicking around of wingtip fence models still flying in 2024, so they clearly haven't done them all yet.

Flight simmers have this annoying habit of trying to get the lowest possible landing rate in fpm using their tracking tools. They'll float 1/2 way down the runway to do a 'butter' landing. In real life, this doesn't happen and is actually dangerous.
@A330Driver4 күн бұрын
Exactly what @sporadicallysane said. Just watch random flightsim landings here on youtube and look at what most people do. They just hold the plane off the runway for an eternity in order to achieve the softest possible touchdown. And then everyone cheers them for their "butter". That's not how you fly an airplane. I did my annual line check a week ago and since I had some 600m of touchdown zone left in front of me I held it off just a slight bit more than usual (no where near what simmers do), to make it a bit smoother for passengers. Guess what, I got a small comment along the lines of "you know we don't like that in a check, just don't do it". They really don't want that. Just smash it into the runway right on the markers.
