PMDG 737-700 for MSFS - Failures: Manual Reversion

Hi all, I'm a PMDG tech team member and real life 737 pilot and today I've created this video to show you some of the abilities of the PMDG 737-700 for MSFS. It is intended as first in a whole series to follow where I'll be showing some non normal operation of the airplane.
In todays video we will look at manual reversion, aka failure of hydraulic systems A and B. What is it like to fly the airplane without hydraulics? Which impact does it have on aircraft performance, what steps does the checklist guide us through? How do you do alternate flap and gear extension? How does a professional pilot handle the QRH during such a failure?
The Boeing 737 is one of the few airliners flying to date that still has a mechanical connection between the control surfaces and the control column. During normal operations the control cables go right into the aileron (through the aileron feel and centering unit) and elevator Power Control Units (PCUs). However with loss of hydraulic system A and B the ailerons and elevators can be mechanically positioned by control wheel movement.
Let's see what's going on when this happens.
The video has been taken using a pre-release beta version of the product, so you can expect to see some issues that will be fixed before release. There's no need to point those out as the team will be aware and working on them already. One example is the missing trim sounds which are still to be added.
If you like my videos please consider a small donation as it's taking a lot of time and effort to create these.

And if you really love the videos, consider becoming a Patron:
/ 737ngdriver
This series of videos is not intended as tutorials, even though I occasionally do some explaning when I think it is worth it, but they are intended as a demonstration of the capabilities of the PMDG 737-700 for Microsoft Flight Simulator and what it can look like when being flown by a professional pilot.
I'll be closing this introduction by saying that I'm not a professional KZbinr or Streamer and these videos are my very first that actually get more than a hundret clicks. I have never before created such content so bear with me for doing beginner mistakes.
I record straight from the sim without any fancy stuff going on in the background.
Infact for this very video I had to learn how to even cut two videos together as I had to leave my computer right in the middle of the approach and forgot to press pause. Reminder for everyone: Do press the pause button (NOT ACTIVE PAUSE!) if you need to leave for a while and the AP is not engaged!

As more of a GA fan, can you explain to me what differences there will be between the 600, 700 and 800 variants and why PMDG would go to all the effort in modelling all these and why people would be waiting for other variants? is it just comfort in what you have flown? I imagine cockpit wise they would all be very similar? Thank you :)

Fantastic video! And probably one of the most interesting and accurate and well presented videos I have ever seen in many years of Simming and watching KZbin! And again, as if we didn't know it, this sort of video presentation reminds us that despite many years of simming, we really don't know very much! And the sort of training you go through to be able to handle these sorts of emergencies is really incredible. As a desktop pilot of many years and many hours on the PMDG 737 in FSX and P3D, just when I think I know a bit, I see a video like this that reminds me I'm just a simmer! But thank you for reminding viewers (and VATSIM ATC chaps!) that we always operate as single pilots with no FO! And therefore the workload can be very high! On behalf of all of us wanna be pilots, thank you for giving up your time and your knowledge to help us to be better desktop pilots. And I'm really looking forward to getting back into the 737 again - and studying again to re-learn to fly this aircraft! Thank you. All the best - Lee (virtualairlinepilot) West Sussex UK
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee and thank you very much for the kind words! My impression with many desktop pilots is that they do possess quite some knowledge, however it's mostly scattered around the head and connections are missing. It would need a good instructior to make those connections and all of the sudden things will start making sense. That's at least how it felt to me in flight school after being a simmer for many years by then.

@@A330Driver Hi again. I spent many years at Heathrow in Aviation Security - and again at Gatwick in the same job. I had many pilot friends from the likes of British Airways (Heathrow - the 747 and 737) and EasyJet (Gatwick - on the Airbus) who helped me to refine my abilities as much as I could in a Single Pilot operation. Some of those people I still know, now that I am retired, but not as much as I did when I was on duty. And I'm still learning. But I'm looking forward to learning the 737 all over again. Take care - Lee

Well done! I haven't flown the 737 in a long time but I do remember that the 737 is a bitch to fly in manual reversion, so personally I would request a block altitude to reduce the workload and I would set aside the maintenance aspect in my decision making and focus and safety, so in this situation I would favour FRA over CGN because it's got half the crosswind component, which will make it easier to land the aircraft. Just a personal assessment here.

Thanks, I am certainly considering a rapid decompression at some point. I might actually do it this week as I'm currently re-reading this topic anyway for my next recurrence simulator training in two weeks time. However something that bothers me with the decompression is how to realise it in the simulator. The Captain and First Officer are doing a LOT of different things at the same time during this manouver and I'm not quite sure yet how to do that in the sim without a second pilot. Something I'll scratch my head about over the next days. I'm considering doing some failures on VATSIM, but I have to find some controllers who are actually willing to help with this as many controllers are not particulary happy about major malfunctions and emergencies. At least not when there's a lot of traffic around. And without traffic it's kinda boring as well, isn't it?

Im just half into my ab initio training and if all goes well I should start my 737 type rating around september. This is just getting on time and it looks fantastic. Your videos are great. I believe that if you make this channel educational and explain certain procedures lets say from normal operation ( from cold and dark start in phases to get back on the ground) in dept enough for flight simulation this channel would be well appreciated and grow exponentially . you have a good voice and people would obviously get all the info rather from a real pilot than other flight simmers. You could easily build up the subscriber base by that. I would suggest 10-15 min. videos just to explain one phase of flight (cold and dark start, setting up FMS, getting started with charts, take off and climb etc.). Theres still nothing like that from a real pilot. Cheers anyway

@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jakub! Just keep in mind, I do have to simplify some procedures for these videos so don't take everything you see for granted. Personally, I also used such videos as tools during my flight training, however I mainly used them to learn the attitudes at which to approach such situations (mainly: DON'T RUSH, unless the thing is burning and falling apart there is absolutely no need to rush into anything) and to get an insight into the decision-making process. Enjoy your training, you will absolutely love the 737 once you fly it!

Absolutely, something I always noticed when watching so many popular streamers is that they just went a bit hectic. You can most often tell my the management of non normal scenarios if somebody is a real life pilot or not. Ps.: Of course that's not meant in any negative way towards any other youtuber or streamer! In fact I am quite sure some do it on purpose because it's more entertaining for the audience. Something that I'll avoid on my channel, my goal is to show you how we are trained to do it in real life.

I have a question regarding the hydraulic system, specifically the alternate flaps switch. With the hydraulic system operating normally, after watching several CBT videos and other videos describing the operation of the system and the logic, when the alternate flaps switch is switched to ARM the standby rudder shutoff valve remains shut and the corresponding light on the overhead stays off. However, in the PMDG 737 it comes on if this switch is put in the ARM position. Is this correct or is the logic in the sim aircraft incorrect? Thanks. Love your videos.

And I believe they're on a good track. Without doubt there will be issues on release, things the beta team never ran into or things that are just too small to be considered required for release.
