I totally get this. It's incredible how we "connect" with certain instruments that aren't necessarily big budget items. Great video.

I practice with my 70s Guild D40 nearly every day. I love it.

I own a 1972 Guild D40 that I purchased new in that year. Still the best guitar I have ever owned.

I recently bought and sold a Guild D40 and bought a Martin D35 both from 1966. The Martin is much more balanced, but the Guild has strong mids and cuts well through with other guitars and singing. To me the Guild has more character and the Martin is the better overall instrument. The Martin sound is immediately recognizable from songs like Solsbury Hill or Wish you Were Here.

I would like to see someone compare the Guild D40 vs a Guild D35. In your comparison, aside from the rosewood vs mahogany, you also have to consider the aging of the tone woods for 46 yrs with your Guild vs 8 years with your Martin. I had bought a 1975 vintage Guild D50 and a new 2023 Guild D50. The vintage sounded better so I sold off the newer D50. Also, the older D50's have ebony fretboard and bridge vs Rosewood in the new rebooted standard model.

I can actually hear the Martin sounds a little better like it’s more balanced but I am a huge fan of old Guilds . I have a 75 Guild G37 and a 85 Martin D28 and there is no difference at all . Different woods but they sound the same

Yeah sometimes different tone wood guitars inexplicably sound very similar. I bet the g37 and d28 sound awesome!

It confuses me why you did a d40 vs d-35 . Rosewood vs mahogany

Yeah I actually address that point about 4 seconds into the video.

I hear quite a difference but both are very nice sounding. The Guild would compare well to a Martin D-18. I used to own both a Martin D-35 and a Guild D-55. Both Rosewood sides and back. They share a Dreadnaught sound but still have their own voices. I regret selling the Guild D-55 now but I did keep the Martin D-35.
