RIP Ray Wilkins ( 1956 - 2018 )

When he left Chelsea for Man Utd he changed or was forced to a deep midfielder & everything went sideways. He killed attacking attractive football. Sorry Ray, but it's how I saw & felt it. Now Ray Clemence passed too. RIP Both.

@@seltaeb9691 He did an excellent job though as what we would now call a 'holding' midfielder, but he could ‘play’ and move forward when it was ‘on’, as well as holding up anyone who attempted to get forward with the ball at his feet and run at the central defenders.

This is an 18 year old boy, remember! Amazing maturity and modesty, that he carried throughout his too-short life. How sad - none of us knows what went on in his private life, but it seems he didn't deserve the depression and alcoholism that descended on him. God bless his wife and loved ones.

Watching Ray Wilkins's interview afterwards makes you understand why Chelsea made him captain at 18. Very impressive. I was 11 at the time and very much a Chelsea fan - it's where we first lived when we migrated from Canada half a century ago, and where my father lived more or less continuously until last year. I went to lots of home games in the 80's, and stood in the Shed with the skinheads, which could be a bit tense at times. That was the Dixon, Speedie, Nevin, Mickey Hazard era, which Chelsea spent mostly yoyo-ing between about 6th place and getting relegated and immediately promoted again. Even when I was 11, I was aware that Chelsea had some kind of financial problem, and that it was to do with the building of a new stand. I guess that was why they had to sell Osgood in 1974, and ultimately explains how Ray Wilkins ended up captaining the side at 18

I used to go often then in the great old Stamford Bridge. Standing in 'The Shed'. Loved that then but much prefer the new ground. Also probably Chelsea's best ever kit that season.

Go on Chelsea!!! not very often we won back then lol. Good to see Butch interview,Chelseas youngest ever captain. He got sold as the club was in so much debt back then.

Unassuming and level headed! The only thing to come out of Chelsea Don' Revie liked was Ray Wilkins. I can see why!

Fair-weather fans who only turn out when the club is doing well don't deserve the moniker 'fan'.

The last two goals were utter corkers and a great interview with Ray Wilkins. No wonder they made him captain at 18 he comes across as very mature and level headed in the interview.

Teddy Maybank when on fire was as ruthless as they come. At Chelsea he had 32 apps and 6 goals before going to Brighton and Holland with PSV. This Carlisle match was the only time he scored 2 for Chelsea.

Brings tears to the eyes. In normal circumstances he would have been at Chelsea for years but they had to sell him because of the debt - I also think he was made captain far too soon amongst others like Charlie Cooke and Ron Harris. Eric Batty the World Soccer writer once selected him for his annual World XI and he didn't do that with many English players. I will always remember him for superb floated through balls and long range shots.
