You're absolutely right about every farm being different. Different soils, different climate, different ways its been handled in the past (thus different problems or conditions to deal with), different goals among farmers, etc. No two farms are identical, even farms side by side or ran by the same guy! Gotta have flexibility in dealing with the issues that crop up on every farm. The one thing I've learned from watching all this farming in different areas, and all my travels around the country and seeing how things are done in different areas, different crops, different machinery and ideas, different practices, is there's NO "one size fits all" in farming, and anybody who says there is don't know what they're talking about! Later! OL J R :)

Can't beat a good ole drill. We went from a drill to an air seeder, and it was nightmare. Went back to a drill but opted for a Landoll. We have been 100% no till for over 12 years in Northeastern Nebraska.

We farm the same way here in Australia. Wes. There are so many new era farming methods out there now. Regen, Natural Sequence, rotational grazing, organic etc. They all have their benefits but I find every method has it's pro's and cons. I like to take a page from everyone's book and incorporate it with conventional farming. That way I actually see results. I've learned that none of these "die hard" alternative farmers or lecturers tend to be honest about the negatives of converting to alternative farming methods. Some are reluctant to even take on suggestions in improving their methods. We now farm no till, however fields need periodic deep ripping and plowing to break compaction and stop weed cycles. We plant cereal crops on a rotation with the end goal being planting improved pastures by the end of the 3 or 4 year cycle. We also still rotational graze cattle but the fields are much larger than first planned out, to reduce the amount of fence infrastructure that can be damaged by kangaroos. It took 10+ years of trial and lots of error to realise that there is indeed a middle ground between conventional and alternative farming.\

Used to pull 2 15 foot 750’s a long time ago. Built our own third row onto the front of them to run mid row branders. Started with yetters as the banders but quickly swapped them for jd openers minus the firming wheel and closing wheel. Ran liquid on the mid rows. High maintenance machines but grow an awesome crop.

Being both organic and conventional crops, there's pros and cons to both practices... biggest problem with organic is the needed tillage but zero worry about chemicals, conventional biggest plus is no-till and more options to choose from. There's a sweet spot in between both. Biggest benefit is hoping to reduce commercial fertilizer use and hopefully suppress weeds with covers, and also build the ecosystem within the soil.
@danw60142 жыл бұрын

My ex finances grandfather rented his land to a guy that did no-till and after 10 years about the ground was so compacted wheat and soybean yeald was so low we then rented it to another guy who ripped the ground and worked it up good and the yeald improved almost by double and corn yeald ended up to be 250 bushels per acre. No til is ok on sandy ground but clay and gumbo compacts to where it's like concrete
@onelonleyfarmer2 жыл бұрын
well I don't agree with that as we no tilled for decades in the 70's and 80's into clay. our issue and why I stopped doing it was lack of understanding how important disc openers and closing wheels where. then we started with the human waste product and that had to be chiseled into the ground so I just went back to tillage. I did no till soybeans until the deer became such a huge problem I couldn't deal with that anymore. now there gone so I'm back.
