75TH ANNIVERSARY of NATO: Statement Scholz! "Security, democracy and freedom guaranteed in Germany!"
Before the celebration of NATO's 75th anniversary, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the merits of the alliance. "NATO has guaranteed security, democracy and freedom for us in Germany over all these years," said Scholz in Berlin before his departure for the NATO summit in Washington. He emphasized the Alliance's unchanged task of defending democracy and freedom, especially in view of the war in Ukraine.
Scholz referred to the extensive German support for Ukraine and called on the alliance partners to follow suit. Support for Ukrainian air defense is particularly important. Germany had played a pioneering role with the delivery of three Patriot air defense systems, said Scholz, and he hoped for further deliveries from other countries.
Scholz expects the anniversary summit in Washington to send a further signal of support for Ukraine against Russia. He emphasized that the Russian president could not hope to sit out the war until support for Ukraine waned.
Scholz rejected doubts about the health suitability of the host president Joe Biden. He had learned in many conversations with Biden that he had prepared the summit very well. Scholz emphasized that the NATO decisions were developed in close coordination between Germany and the USA and expects a successful summit.
The NATO summit begins on Tuesday in Washington. In addition to Scholz and the new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj is also expected to attend. Further military aid for Ukraine is planned, but there will be no invitation to join.
