Friendly fire is a more common cause for American casualties than we tend to believe. While I was on Operation Just Cause, we lost several members of our company to friendly fire. The enemy we engaged were wearing the same woodland BDUs as we were, making it difficult and confusing to determine friend from foe... especially during a heated firefight. Sgt. Jasso death could have been avoided had the Afghan forces been better trained. But knowing command, they were under pressure to involve them before they were 100%. The pressure probably originated from some overzealous congressmen who was up for reelection, creating a facade they were doing their job. It's very unfortunate and sad what happened to Sgt. Jasso. My condolences goes out to his family. I also feel terrible for the heroic dog Maiko. I bet he was an awesome K9 scout. I salute both for their service and sacrifice!

Anyone with operational experience in that country knows that the statement @0:44 really means "The ANA are a complete shambles". The brass always do that. The ANA can put on the most outrageous display of abject incompetence, I mean like pants-on-head level clown-car antics, like zero competence whatsoever, like you gave a bunch of chimpanzees guns just to see what would happen, and the coalition brass would always give gushing, over the top positive reviews afterwards. "The most impressive display of professional military prowess I've ever seen in my entire career." Stuff like that, every time. To the point where it almost sounded like they were taking the piss. But they were dead serious, playing it completely straight every time. The rest of us were left wondering if the brass really believed their own BS about the ANA being more competent than a chimp with a machine gun (because it could be pretty dangerous to have your upper leadership be that out of touch). Personally I don't think they did. I think they just said that stuff for the sake of the ANA's morale. The proof of the ANA's systemic incompetence is that western forces are still in A-stan holding their hands twenty years later. Nearly a generation of mentorship and they still can't stand on their own two feet. I doubt they ever will. They just don't have it in them. Most of us knew over a decade ago that the ANA was completely hopeless.
