Hey Matt just wanted to say thanks for sharing this vid. You could've just told everyone in your crew to keep the fire hush hush and nobody would've known about it... but instead you had the balls to show the footage and explain the issues and admit you made a mistake with risk of damaging your reputation. And you've copped a barrage of h8ers on the comments that's maybe even harder! XD That takes balls. Now people like me building a 4wd/camping/overlanding rig will hopefully learn the easy way and not the hard way. Thanks

thanks for sharing the info even though you don't have to. It's a good reminder for us all how quickly this stuff happens and to be extra vigilant with our electrical setups. My biggest fear is not having enough time to get the kids out the back should something like this happen.
@commonsense-grs3 жыл бұрын
Now up to the fire part, know how you feel, went through the same thing. I wired up my brake controller and stupid me only used single insulated wire, had the plastic wire ties to tight and bang, all this smoke and opened the bonnet and flames dripping down, at least I had fire extinguisher and got it out pretty quick. But not knowing the flaming plastic had dripped onto my auto trans shift cable would you believe, so could get it out of gear or change gears. Off to the mechanics at Broken Hill and the asshole ripped me off by saying I needed a auto trans replacement, then later find it was only the shift cable which didn't cost much, $100, but got a $4000 bill later, bugger. Learnt some valuable lessons with this one.

love home made electrical setups with wrong sized fuses for cables
@Amandaandglenn20235 жыл бұрын
fuse or circuit breaker must be matched to the cable and not to the load. 50 amp cable should have a 50 amp or less fuse/circuit breaker. This is why it is so crucial to design your circuits very carefully. I've seen this with some manufacturers who supply fuses with their products. Kickass are one example, where they give you an 80 amp fuse for 50 amp cable.

A lesson in amps! Amps are drawn not pushed! you had too much draw on the system for the size of your wiring and yes a right size fuse should have blown before an electrical fire

I just got to part you are counting the dead cows and you say lets do something to back the farmers, well not these ones. If there is no feed or water these farmers have a responsibility to move these animals to where they can survive, not just let them starve to death, I know it costs money, but they make me feel sick, sorry for the rant.
@philelliott53275 жыл бұрын
Classic all the gear and no idea. You had everything other than correctly installed, fuse protected electrics and a fire extinguisher, ARB will sell you one with ARB on it. Yes it is dry in the NT but most of the dead cattle near the road are hit by trucks at night and stagger a few feet off the road before dying. If people who live and work out here were as well organised as you blokes we would be in the shit, go home where the grass is green and the diesel is cheap before you do yourselves a mischief.
@theexplorelife5 жыл бұрын
Phil Elliott 😂😂 The wiring was done in the middle of no where to tow my mates trailer because his car went home on a tow truck. So no I didn’t fuse it. We had a zip tie break and it touched the exhaust and shorted out. Arb did sell me one it’s called fire stiker, it’s compact single use I highly recommend it. The cows were dead because there’s no feed or water we come across hundreds of dead cattle and they were as far as the eye could see. The only way to get an idea is to have a crack 🤙
@philelliott53275 жыл бұрын
See I knew you would have an ARB one😂. I have recovered broken down and wrecked vehicles from all over the NT, most of the failures I see on vehicles out bush are caused by add on bits and pieces, so called upgrades, others are rolled over with full roof racks and lift kits. If you want a safe reliable rig keep it simple. Most visitors vehicles look like they have ram raided an ARB store. Look at vehicles that live and work out bush, usually bog standard, less is more. Central Australia is a fantastic place but it can be very unforgiving. Please come and share it but stay safe.
@theexplorelife5 жыл бұрын
Phil Elliott That’s the difference mate you live and work out there we have driven 3 days to get there and we need the added bits. Sure some things are over kill like big tires but some of the places I go I need the gear to get there and back. I lived out of this truck for 2 months on this trip it is my home. I don’t take anything unless I know I will use it. We love sharing this beautiful country off and inspiring others to get out there. This video was a prime example of somthing that shouldn’t have happened but did. So we share it in hopes that people watching get there wiring checked and go grab a fire extinguisher for there vehicles. We learn every trip 🤙
