Just so people aren't confused, this is not how calories are actually counted on your nutrition label., It used to be this way but it's too expensive for companies. It's an approximation based on the number of grams of certain macronutritions. For example, fat is on avg 9 calories per gram. Just add it all up, and that's how it's done for food labels.
@samvandervelden8243
@samvandervelden8243 4 ай бұрын
Yup, and to add to that there are various techniques used in chemistry to break down food into various components like fats protein and carbohydrates so that they can be measured
@jambo5936

Maybe, but for most products, the macronutrients dont exactly add up to the calorie content shown. Just find a product and count, i have found it never adds up, but its pretty close
@activision4170
@activision4170 4 ай бұрын
@@jambo5936 I have done that before and it was the same or very close. The grams on the macronutrients is probably rounded, while calories are added with the non-rounded value (Guessing, as it's not surprising). Calories are calculated, not determined by heating. Also what you're saying doesn't disprove my point, the government doesn't hide how this is done.

I took a class in college called "Energy Tech for the Future". I was advised against enrolling in the course because it was much more challenging than other courses that would fulfill my lab requirement. I have never had a more enjoyable and interesting class in my life. I learned about burning calories (the literal way, as described in this video) and many other energy-related topics. Although these topics are irrelevant to my career in music, I am so thankful that I took the course

When I was in high school, I actually ditched Algebra and would sneak into Chemistry class. Of course, I would get caught, but not because I was absent. The reason I got caught was I was the only one who kept submitting passing tests for the class. The principal didn't know how the handle the situation, he had never had a student leave class to go attend another class, he said he was stuck between "I want to punish you" and "I want to encourage this knowledge-seeking behavior." But in actuality, all I was really interested in was talking to the Chemistry teacher about the different kinds of acids I could use to decap integrated circuits, to which he would love to go on for hours and hours about the different kinds of solutions and how they would react, and how the silica in the chips would react once the acid worked its way through the epoxy. It was fun times. You remind me a lot of him.

I used a bomb calorimeter in school for a class about thermodynamics. Which made me hate bomb calorimeters. XD Not only is it hard to calculate time while looking at the temp, sometimes it just doesn't work. Our last sample was a perfect little puck of benzoic acid, if I remember well. We put it exactly right in the machine, the oxygen was pumped in, we pushed the button, and after 10 minutes, the temperature had gone up by 0,2C. Turns out our wire, which is used to start the fire, had burned. The puck was charred. It hadn't caught fire. It's incredibly interesting. I just hate them because of the pain they caused me and my lab partner. XD

Hey Phil, just to clarify: when we talk about burning calories, we don't mean setting food on fire. It's actually a way of describing how our bodies use energy. Calories are units of energy that our bodies get from the food we eat. When we exercise or do any physical activity, our muscles need energy to work, and they get this energy by breaking down the calories stored in our body. This process happens through metabolism, where our body converts food into energy. Even when we're not exercising, our body is constantly burning calories to maintain essential functions like breathing, circulating blood, and regulating temperature. So, "burning calories" is just a shorthand for using up the energy from food through various physical activities, not literally burning food with flames!

It's also why calories are not an effective way of determining food energy. Our cells are bioelectric batteries, not furnaces. Using a calorie count to determine food energy makes about as much sense as using voltage to measure the energy in our gasoline. Sure you can figure out a number, but since the unit of measurement doesn't reflect the way the fuel is being used, the results are significantly less useful.
