The Inline 6 is a very strong engine and always was.

On those, I believe the bushings on the column shifter wear out and you just have to replace them. That’s probably what the play is. I had the same issue on my 2005 Honda CR-V, which has a five speed manual transmission. I replaced the shifter linkage bushings and the slop went away.
