That respirator that you are wearing is a dust respirator. You need to wear a vapor respirator when you are spaying a oil base stain/paint. Of course you are outside so the over spay won’t be as bad.,but if you were in a enclosed room you would definitely want to wear a vapor respirator. All I have ever used is a Crayco airless spayer. I used to paint houses for a living. Interior and exterior. Water base and oil base.

I like the sprayer it looks like it really speeds things up. It's good that the wood is soaking it up and the stain is penetrating the pine. You might want to consider a heavier duty protection for your breathing. I just purchased a face mask with disposable filter cartridges that can be customized to the job you are doing.

Years ago I brushed my 36 x 48 barn, it took 60 hours. More recently I have sprayed it twice at about 4 hours each time. That included time for fixing the sprayer when it gave trouble!

Mike, if you're going to use this kind of stain for future builds, think about getting a 5 gallon bucket, should be cheaper in the long run. Great job, doing well.
@MartyM_334 жыл бұрын
Mike, next time you spray start with the pressure at a very low setting and work your way up until the spray tails (the little dots on the edge of the spray fan) are gone. You’re losing a ton of material to over spray. 2 gallons should be more than enough to finish the whole building. That’s a great color. I hope my recommendation helps and I’m speaking from 16 years experience.

Mike, Mike. After watching you for about 4 months now and all of your videos I have learned one thing that I am sure of. You are very matriculate about everything you do. From cutting fire wood at 16 inches to stacking it properly, milling lumber from the mill and dry stacking it to mini cabin overdoing. And now the sprayer back in the box. You are very tidy and neat. But I can’t recall the last time I have seen that side by side clean. I think it’s time to clean her up. Lol. I only mention this cause I just purchased a side by side and I’m noticing everything. Great job Morgan’s.

Its looking good Mike, as I said its a little learning curve. The only thing you need is a 5 gallon bucket to pull from, to get a more consistent color. Plus a damp towel to cover the bucket to keep any trash, debris or dirt in your paint or stain. Catch you on the next one!

I used Ready Seal to re-stain a log cabin house. It is much cheaper to purchase in 5gal pails than to use it in a gallon can. Where I got it at I believe it was around $40/gal and it was $125 for a 5gal pail. The sprayer seems to work nice. Good job Morgan's!

Hey Mike I have the Graco Magnum X7 for years now. The one thing I can tel you is to clean it well when your done. Get a couple of 5 gal buckets. Pump a lot of water through it, take the spray head off and move the sprayer to the water and pump the stain back to the can stopping just as it turns deluted. This will clean the hose and save some paint. Take the spray head completely apart don’t just run some water through it. You will find paint hiding everywhere in there. I leave it all apart to dry then spray it some wd40 before putting it all back together. Also there is a check ball at the top of the pick up if that gets stuck it will never prime.

Love that stain color. I spent a lot of years spraying in my body shop. Relatable information. Get a 3M carbon based filter mask with rubberized housing for a good fit. They are in the 20 some to 30 dollar range. Even better yet is the full face mask covering your eyes as well. I need a paragraph to explain all of that. When spraying it is best to edge out the work surfaces first. When you go all around the edges it frames the job, and then you can focus on doing the flat surfaces evenly. Done effectively enough it would all but eliminate the brushing, at least for the most part. I had mentioned that on the header/face panel (You are a perfectionist like I am) you would need to brush a certain area away from where you stopped with the brushing because the sprayer is not going to give you the option of going up to that line finely. It would create a second coat situation which would result in a much darker overlap spot. From the video yes it is a much darker patch. Whether it dries closer to the rest or not is to be seen. One way to correct it is to roller or brush a second coat across the entire header and stop finely along that edge so then everything on the header would have only one second coat. (Where it is overlapped you do not coat that again.) That header is your header. It is the marquee spot on the shed so spending such a little bit of time to make it even makes sense. So yes edging out first, and then combining the ideal head for spray pattern, and being able to focus on overlapping the coats will give you the technique that you yearn for. Perfecting the spray head size will enable you to cover a good sized area without too wide of a spray pattern which wastes a lot of material into the air. Have to play with it to find the sweet spot. When edging out I noticed others advising you to get an extension, ideally you don't want an extension for edging out when the area is easily reachable, but extensions of course are great for big flat areas that are harder to reach.

Just a couple of tips. I had a Graco airless for a few years (until my garage was broken into and sprayer, two compressor, pressure washer, etc. were stolen so good thinking on your part to get a security system). It was the wood soaking up the stain and not the fault of the sprayer that it was taking so much product to cover the work. Spraying, especially with a good quality sprayer, generally takes less stain, paint, or other chemical as opposed to brush or roller applications. Ensure that the the motion which you are using to apply the stain is correct for the orientation of the tip (vertical or horizontal fan pattern). Use a horizontal motion (side to side) with a vertical fan spray and a vertical (up and down) motion with a horizontal fan spray. Also, whichever motion you are using, try to keep the tip at a 90 degree angle to the work piece. Stop spraying at the end of each pass (side to side or up and down) and only restart (squeeze the trigger) once you have begun to move in the opposite direction. This prevents apply too much product to the ends of each pass, resulting in an uneven application and wasted product. If you decide to use the sprayer to apply latex paint (interior or exterior) use a product from Flood called FLOTROL. As the website states " FLOETROL® is a latex paint additive to improve flow and levelling of water-based paints." In a nutshell, latex paint without a thinner is too thick (viscous) for the sprayer to compress and push through the system. It will usually just sit there chugging with little to nothing coming through the spray tip. With FLOTROL, it sprays and fans out just as it should. I usually mix the FLOTROL at the max recommended ratio to paint. Use a large drill and a paint or grout mixing attachment to ensure that the it is well mixed. If you let a batch sit overnight, hit it with the mixing attachment before resuming the following day. Lastly, if you are doing a large job (painting a house over the period of multiple days) you can wrap the spray gun in a plastic bag (ensure it is intact with no holes or broken seams) and secure it tightly in order to leave the rig overnight without disassembly and cleaning. Also wrap the pickup tube in a plastic bag and secure it. When you are ready to work the next day, simply remove the bags resume the process. The pickup end may need a rinse in some water, as it is more prone to forming a skin on the paint on it, but the gun end should be fine. There could be a small bit of dried paint in the opening of the nozzle. If so, remove the nozzle and rinse it in water (warm, if you have it) or hit it with a garden hose/dip it in a bucket of water. Once you are finished with the project, rigorously clean everything, by the book. Graco is a quality product and should serve you well for years. Thanks for the videos. --- Ted

I've had my Simplisafe system for about 6 months ... works like a charm, easy wireless install, and love the remote camera viewing on the smart phone ... been a builder for decades, installed many systems, but never had one myself ... the inexpensive monitoring price convinced me (and uncertain times) plus I got an extra lawn sign to warn the low life's, I also have a large male Bouvier des Flandres (cattle dog of flanders) as a back up .... Mike, I never knew this, but my small engine guy told me I should start my generator every 3 months, one to check engine, second to put a "load" on the electric to cycle it .... he said he see's many that start and run, but won't generate electric, that has to be depressing in a power outage ... not sure what process goes wrong, but I now do this ... I just plug in a shop light for 10 minutes ... those Graco X5's are great machines as long as you clean them well they'll last forever .... and yea, untreated pine absorbs a lot of stain, I usually double my stain estimate when working with it ... I got a great chuckle in the last video of Hunter "speed hello" flash ... and love watching the whole family join in some of the videos ... just joined Melissa's page and watched Hannah learning to drive the Jeep ... she did really well for the first time

I have one for mine and it makes a tremendous difference. Not only does it keep you out of the overspray but you can easily paint ten foot ceilings while standing on the ground. I've had my X5 for over five years and it's definitely a game changer when it comes to painting. I bought mine to paint the house that I and my family built but mostly used by my son in his construction business. You can control overspray by using smaller tips like one starting with a 4. Just take the time to study and understand the tip numbers.

Mike, now that I think about it, you may want to put on 2 coats. First coat sucks into the wood, second coat actually protects from the UV, moisture, and all round weather concerns. With sprayer now, that might be good to consider. What do other professional painters think? Do a section on the back and see what you think.

Looks awesome! I’ve only done one house interior with three bedrooms using a paint sprayer so I’m not exactly an expert but I watched a bunch of videos of professionals doing it and what I noticed was they all had an extension about a three or 4 foot rod or tube that clipped under the gun and had the nozzle at the end of it. I found a 3 foot extension for my little Wagner end it made a huge difference, you can reach everything much better, You’re farther away so you’re not getting it all over you, and the end was curved so it was a lot easier to get underneath things and into nooks and crannies with that angle on the tip. I did about half the house before I bought the extension end it was just a huge difference in the labor side of it and the mess as well, but especially when you’re doing the higher up stuff, you can go a good 10 or 12 feet without needing a ladder, and no bending over. I would check and see if that manufacturer makes one, even a little 3 foot extension makes an enormous difference. Also if you have an old trailer that spends a lot of time sitting out in the sun, when you’re building tables and stuff like that and staining or painting them if you do it on top of the trailer that overspray is like free protection, it will just be an ugly trailer. I noticed because I had two trailers with the same wood and after about five years one of them completely rotted out and the other one was still in great shape it just had stain and paint all over it. Lol

A couple of questions from a novice. Can you comment on the cleanup process. How do you clear the stain out of the feed and sprayer head? What was the bucket of mineral spirits for? Are you using it to dilute the stain to improve flow? Finally, how is the application of stain different from paint? The simple answer may be links to Graco videos that address these questions. I have never used a sprayer which is the reason that I am asking for basic information. Thanks for your video !!

You can cut down on waste by buying different jets. 2 in. 3,4,6,8. spray widths. Also couple different length extensions. Also a swivel just behind the spray tip, you can adjust different angles so you're not contorting your arm. Also the paper mask is not enough. A partial respirator for solvents. I ran 2 units for 25 years. Good luck

Charles Marshall overspray is overspray, it just becomes stain on the plywood with your method and at some point it will start dripping on you . I don’t see the overspray being a problem in this situation. The entire structure is the same finish. May be helpful if you’re trying to keep it off other surfaces but a major time sucker to keep moving it to keep up with your work flow. It would be easier to use a roll of plastic.

I think you will find yourself buying 5 gallon buckets of stain. Not sure if your model has a second strainer in the handle? Just an FYI If you do any paint products with heavy solids in them, make sure you remove and.clean that strainer as well. We painted houses with Graco sprayers years ago and followed the sprayer with a 3/4 Knapp roller. Very quick application process, and evened out the paint very well. We did 1 barn with stain, board and batten style, rolled all the open areas and followed up with a brush on the corners. Great work on the wood shed. You will be very happy with that sprayer.

The clean up is pretty simple after you have done it a few times. It is really easy for latex paints because water is your cleanup solvent. You just have to factor in waste which is the biggest draw back. It works great for big jobs with a single color but it gets tricky fast with multiple colors or small jobs. Like everything else, use it for what it is intended for and you will enjoy it.

Pressure might have been a tad to high. You can also try a different tip like 411. I like to use what is left in the hose instead of wasting it. Put the hose in the mineral spirits and continue spraying until the mineral spirits start to come out. Thank you for a great video!

Really good video fella. Thank you for sharing your day. Simply Safe. Sounds like a good idea. Not here. Haven’t locked my door for 30 years. Keys are in truck, quad, tractor.

I think you might loose less stain if you turn the pressure down some. High pressure really atomizes the stain and less pressure will stop that to a large extent. Start with pressure set at factory, then turn down, spray and test, turn down spray and test, turn down spray and test, and when you run into poor results turn back up a little
