The real purpose of karate is to build the person, the character, the whole being...not to be able to win a fight in your 20s but to be able to be strong, a carrier of culture and a patron in your community and a protector of your community. The journey starts when you are young..... you build the will and strike or percuss the body so that bones and tissues change and harden...No secrets just lots of work...building routine.... the shihans are great examples of the true meaning of karate....
@MeisterPommfritt5 жыл бұрын
Steve Gadd You‘re totally right! I agree in it 100 %.
@tobiaskyon53835 жыл бұрын
The real purpose of Karate is to be able to punch a hole in a person if said person threatens your life. All the old masters learned with this in mind, the spiritual component came afterwards - and that's the main flaw of a lot of modern Karate: They start with the spiritual component and forget about the brutal, simple purpose of survival. It has to be the other way around for the spiritual component to work.
@SteveGaddTasmusic5 жыл бұрын
I think you are confusing origins with purpose..even then I am not sure about this.....Okinawan karate was Japanese oppression for a while but it originates from mostly Northern styles of Shaolin... which was a Buddhist order... right from the start if you accept its myth of origins. Further the saying that there is no first strike in Karate...and the meaning of Age as receiving... receiving and painfully recoiling the blow... is important... but most important is the social role of the dojo in Okinawan society.... people train hard with the long game in mind... there are people training into their 90s as the training is not instrumental, ie a means to finally hurt people better.. but an end in itself.... regarding spiritual things being taught in the West.. frankly haven't seen much...lots of standing in lines and training for the next belt... but it is not spiritual issues ..what ever they are..that I am talking about.. rather the building of a character, will, strength, encouragement of others, stoic persistence.. I left Karate for kickboxing back in the 70s because it wasn't getting me to where I wanted to be as a fighter... as an older man I realise that this is normal for young men....who need to defend themselves and test themselves against others.....I also know that it is not a path that is viable or continues to have that meaning through the whole of a life..

I've seen a lot of ridiculous things about self defense. They are actually doing demonstrations in real time not slow motion with opponent accommodation. Nothing but respect. As for the MMA comment, let's see how they fair when they get 60 and 70. Not many Benny the Jet Urquidez around these days. Maybe Dan Inosanto, but pickings are slim. Both despite their age can still clean your clock. I love traditional and modern training techniques. But let's be honest, these men have clearly dedicated themselves to the art for a lifetime. Most of us don't approach that level of dedication or mastery of technique. Those movements are ingrained into muscles memory. So why they might not be Now the world's most deadly practitioner because of the basic physics of ageing. I wouldn't want to tangle with them, I'd take a pass. Because A out pure respect and honor, B you're expected to win and there is no redemption from getting the floor wipe with your carcass from someone old enough to be your grandfather and that is more likely going to be the case LOL

I have had the pleasure of training with Dan Inosanto, for a class. I had only been training with sticks for only a few months, and when he says "im going to show you in slow motion" its not slow. I was like uuuhh.... looking back and forth at the rest of the class, and he came over and helped me. All I could think was "holy shit I'm being helped by Dan Inosanto" soft spoken and he treats you like an equal, which feels so awesome. Very cool down to earth guy, if you didn't know who he was you'd never guess. "When you get older you have to use the bathroom more, but man does it feel good when you do" -Dan Inosanto

Thanks for sharing. It is nice to see the old training methods and realize which are applicable in current day. I notice the external and internal aspects of the training. I see how over the years, the sensei have callous their body to become weapons in and of themself. The external strength training methods, which may seem classical, but are clearly a means of health and longevity. Not limited specifically to martial arts combat application. I can see how it closely relates to martial arts from Shaolin. In order to achieve this level of body, calloused hands, dense bone, one must dedicate and may not be for everyone. If you are looking for health and longevity, these sensei are in their 60's and 70's, clearly this is for everyone.

The traditions of martial arts go back 100's of years, represented by the old ones who passed it on faithfully. The modern man uses devices, other styles to incorporate in their reality. Everyone has to have a base to build on. Learn and mature in that style and then venture to learn from others. No foundation, no true growth. If we don't master the basics, our advanced work will fail. These masters are like strong old oak trees, faithfully planted. Shalom.

Joan Doe, this is not Japanese Karate. It's Okinawan Karate from the island of Okinawa where the natives learned Chinese Kung Fu and brought a simplified version back to Okinawa. The island was claimed by the Japanese, but the old timers did not consider themselves Japanese since the Japanese were the invaders of the island. Eventually, the Japanese adopted this style and called it Japanese Karate. But remember, Karate originally was NOT Japanese, it was the Okinawan form of Chinese white crane and tiger form Kung Fu from the Fuken providence in China.

We would spar every session, Fridays was with no gloves or protection to this day what I learned at that dojo is relevant for self defense now a days everything is so watered down. To this day the skin on my hands is so thick when I cut my fingers or palms on accident I typically don't bleed my hands are more sensitive but the skin is still thick. Smash your funny bone or knee into a sharp corner doesn't hurt usually don't even flinch.

They do. At the highest levels of Shorin Ryu, there is a system in itself, the Hakatsuru katas, five of them. They are the Okinawan version of the White Crane system. There was originally a lot of interraction between the Chinese martial artists and Okinawans. Of course over time, the Chinese styles underwent revision and modification as they gradually became accepted and ingrained in Okinawan culture.

Interesting video. I forgot how different Okinawan is from Japanese on mainland. I lived in Kobe for years and the way of speaking is way different.

This is why I love karate. You can practice a different style and train with friendship and respect in another dojo.

That's why you don't skip hardening training. We use to do a little bit of that (I practice a different art btw). But these guys are legends. I only dream of having wrists as thick as those. First I saw one was from the Gracie founder. Salute to all the artists out there keeping it real. 🤘
