This video is a couple years old hence my comment is long after the video was posted. This was a great primer to familiarize a technician that never worked on switching supplies. I could have used this information about 40 years ago when first introduced to testing and troubleshooting switching supplies. The aerospace company I was working for designed many multi voltage switchers for use in aircraft where weight and size are at a premium. The technology was quite new at the time and my training was limited to linear supplies. When it was shown how much power these compact and lightweight supplies could produce I was very impressed. The multi voltage computer power supplies so common now are a prime example of this technology. Thank you again for another entertaining and enlightening video.

If I could just offer one criticism, it's that your pronunciation of 'weight' to the native English speaker is wrong, and my brain gets stuck for awhile (until it adjusts!); I then have to go back aways and re-listen. Kind of like when you're reading and you come across a word you don't know the definition of. You can keep reading for several pages before you realize you haven't comprehended a thing since the errant word... Anyhow, just trying to help; thanks again! FYI, 'weight' is pronounced the same as 'wait'.

Excellent video tutorial. Nothing beats seeing live traces on a scope and meter readings. I've been debugging the power supply on my TV and that section of the circuit was baffling me until I came across your video. With the knowledge gained from your video, I was able to trace the problem to a faulty regulator on the secondary side that was driving the feeedback pin high on the switch IC, thus disabling it. It all makes perfect sense now. Thanks and keep up the great work!

THANKS PETER! ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO! I bought a swithcing mode supply in the form of a charger inverter for a big sail boat. It was very noisy, so I decided, let's delay the switching noise so it is 180 degrees out of phase and mix that back in so it cancels itself out. IT WORKS GREAT! I am kind of new to the whole ham radio thing and all those fabulous new products engineered to separate us from our money, so I had no idea MFJ and Palstar already made phase inverting noise reduction boxes. I made a linear supply for the bench from a huge buck boost 24/48 volt secondary dry transformer, regulators (zeners) and lots of transistors, to the tune of 200 amps of 12-14 volts of very clean DC. It weighs a tonne but, it's very quiet. The charger inverter will give me 100 amps of 13.6 volt DC power, and off a battery of batteries I can get 25 amps of 120 VAC, "AND" the 100 amps of 13.6 volts. Off batteries that 13.6 volts is as about clean as it gets. . 73s to you and your's!

Higher frequency was used in planes with 440Hz, even before switching power supplies to make them much lighter. Of course switchinh power supplies go WAY BEYOND 440Hz, making them tiny for the power they control! Good video, thank you :)

Knew about the a long time but had no clue to their working. Now know a lot more. Thank you. Basically its to up the frequency so the transformers can be a lot smaller. Then make use a quite a few ways of protection.Thank too for speaking in English - must be quite a bit harder doing that.

The optocoupler feedback network is for voltage regulation only. The over current protection is via pin 3 and the voltage across the emitter resistors on the switching transistor.

Super video Peter! These switching supplies are tiny now, and you can plug one into 100, 110, 115, 120, 155, 220, 230, 240, 250 volts 50 or 60 Hz and it does not really matter. I would not try it with 25 Hz. That stuff is gone now. It used to overheat transformers, and other things. Up until about 20 years ago some parts of upstate New York, and Canada still had OLD 25 cycle mains power from the old Niagara Falls Power Plants. The utility companies wanted to change it to 60 Hz for ages, but back then there were still a lot of old factories with motors that were synchronized to run on 25Hz and the factories said it would cost too much to retool. Most of these Factories are gone, and the work is being done in Asia, Mexico, and the far east. I have been looking at high speed switching to reflect loads onto vacuum tubes to eliminate the need for output transformers. They can even tell what power tubes I am using and adjust the reflected impedance(s). High speed switching....FUN STUFF< AND WELL EXPLAINED MY GOOD FRIEND! Gott Segne 73s KI7AQJ

Hello Peter, good general information about the working of the switching mode power supply. Maybe it would be nice to see how good the common choke works. Many hams suffer from the solar panels converters. Many thanks and catch you next time.

+FEY Hi, yes you are totally right but unfortunately I have no artificial mains network which is needed to locate and show these noise and qualify it. But anyway I'm planing to have one in the future.. 73
