I remember when 79th Street was buzzing with stores and activity. Families would stroll down the street in the evenings to window shop and get a bite to eat or walk around the licking ice cream cones.

Thanks man. My parents grew up in Avalon Park and graduated from Hirsch High School in 1959. Very different then. That whole area used to be like that TV show Happy Days.

In the early 1950s my dad worked for Van Cleef Brothers, a division of Johns-Manville at the corner of 79th and Woodlawn. The the company and building are both long gone - I think the location is a parking lot today.

Harold F. Robinson I used to live in the Gresham -Auburn Park area from 1967 to 1978. My mother lived on 81st. and Carpenter Street from 1971 to 2010. I went to Saint Leo Elementary from 1967 to 1969. Leo High School q969 to 1971. Then graduate from Neil F. Simeon Vocational High School 1971 to 1973. I later did three years in the Army 1973 to 1976. I went back home for two years 1976 to 1978. Then, I finally got my own apartment on the North side of Chicago in the East Roger's Park area in 1978.

Thank you so much for these videos! So cool. The one thing I seemed to notice is, besides the cars driving, it seems so lifeless. Also, it seems nobody gets to close to each other at stop lights. Thanks again!

Judging by the traffic or lack there of, this appears to be morning after rush hour. If this was 4pm, there’d be traffic and people everywhere. It’s a real pain in the ass to get around.

10:51 Wow, this street has changed quite a bit... Laundromat Limo used to be on the left, Burger King got remodeled, Marathon used to be Amoco and then BP by late 2002, and the streetlights, the library and McDonald's are still the same. @ 11:13, Boost Mobile used to be a barber shop and Chatham Foods was right across the street, and a very old Laundromat with wooden floors used to be on that same side of the street across from Ruggles Elementary. The 3 story building might've been demolished. @ 12:24 on the left side near the Dan Ryan expressway, an abandoned, tarnished building with graffiti stood at the spot for the longest time. One of the graffiti in large print said "God did it". @14:05, Moo & Oink was on the right side, and Dominick's & Coin Laundry was on the left. @14:47, "2001 Hair Salon" used to be somewhere on the right. Kids used to open & play around fire hydrants around this area back in the day.

I like the architecture of the buildings at 9:57. As far as I'm concerned, some of the worst neighborhoods in cities have the best architecture. (The modern, glass and steel buildings of the better neighborhoods, with some exceptions, look cold and boring.)
@carstarsarstenstesenn2 жыл бұрын
many of Chicago's worst neighborhoods today were vibrant neighborhoods in the past. you can blame white flight, "urban renewal," and the corrupt government for that.
@seventimes25714 жыл бұрын
Nice video but you did not go to the total end , not necessary I guess . When you crossed the dan Ryan on the west part that part of the neighborhood is called west Chatham.

@@Haddley333 Its 100% possible to avoid trouble in these neighborhoods alot of innocent victims are wrong place and wrong time. ALTHOUGH there is that event when an innocent is targeted and you a newcomer never seen on the block before out of nowhere is jogging. You're eventually going to get approached and depending on how you handle the situation it will go either way.

The apartment building in that movie is on diversey st. Between Broadway and Sheridan. It's the same one Charlie Chaplin lived in. Literally on the border of Lakeview on the Northside.

@Galidorquest2 жыл бұрын
@* static Nah, it's mainly Hyde Park, Bronzeville, Uptown (near North Ave.) and some of the Westside near I-290 that's been gentrified since the Mid 00's. Areas that are close to Downtown tend to experience gentrification. Most people who don't live in the deadly parts of the Southside steer clear of it.
