Average Speed: Definition: The average speed is defined as the total distance covered per unit time.From this illustration we can understand the concept.
Where t=0, x=0.
And after t=40 sec, x= 300 meters.
Therefore, Average Speed= total distance / total time
= d/∆t where ∆t=t2-t1
=300/40 = 7.5
=7.5 m/sec
Velocity:Definition: The rate of change of displacement of a particle is called "Velocity".Suppose a particle is at x = 0 position at time t = 0 seconds.After some time t1 = 10 seconds, it reaches the position say x1 = 150m, and after t2 = 25 seconds it reaches x2 = 300 m distance, and it moves to the position x3 = 200 m after time t3 = 30 seconds.Therefore, the displacement d x = x3 - x = 200-0 = 200 metersTotal time dt = t3 - t = 30 - 0 = 30 seconds.Velocity = displacement by time =(dx )/dt = 200/30 = 6.6 m/sec
