A good 4-6 six inches of my hair was pretty much dead, I used no shampoo on the bottom and either Redken Ultra soft or Redken frizz dismiss, while wet I use a argan oils and don't brush in between showers. I have curly hair though so I am not sure if the don't brush rule would apply to you.
