Felix saying outright that this is only useful when you don't have a larger saw is wonderful. People ask me a lot why I like my victorinox so much when the tools are so small and limited. They aren't there to be my primary tools, but solutions when I don't, if that makes sense.

You don't even have to cut through the hole trunk. If you're somewhat down half way to the center, forget the saw and smash the weak point against a rock or a tree and it will break off - saves a lot of time. If it's already dead for some years and the bark is already gone it might be enough to saw away 1/3 to the center.

Great tip, I know this is for if you are stuck but a fun fact about saws is you should only be cutting something half the length of the saw. So for the 91mm models the "correct" size material shouldn't exceed 35mm. If you cut bigger you will find you saw clogs up, it's quite easy to clean out on a little branch you cut with your penknife though. This is true for all saw. It become much more important with large cross cut saw as you need to eject all the chips into you will get a biuld up if chips in the middle, this will cause a binding point but much worse a hot spot that could, and dose, damage your saw.

@heritagejonery3879 Жыл бұрын
A ball point pen is often better than a pencil, particularly on darker wood. I trained under a very skilled cabinet maker who used one a lot, obviously only if it's a mark you don't need to remove or is going to be hidden though, we genrally do cut the mark off anyway so is rarely an issue

Thats pretty clever. Under perfect circumstances the maximun diameter you can cut is roughly twice that of the saws lenght using this technique.

not quite ... the saw still needs hub. I would say the trunk may be a maximum of 1.5 times the length of the saw

Or you dont need to go around full circle. Make the first cut, than continue cutting only pushing the saw down at the handle part, and tip remains more or less at the same place. Gliding on the last cut area because it have solid no toot tip. Continue doing that until you reach about 2/3 of diameter. Reposition the saw 90 degree from the last cut and continue sawing until trough. First cut area figuratively shortens the diameter or the path that saw needs to travel. Nice work regardless on all your tips. I had a few Swiss army knives since my childhood, and rally liked exploring the woods and functionality of the tools, at and around the house.
