Swift is poetic, which is what's called riddles or parables, in other words, the meaning is hidden, and not meant to be understood by the reader or listener, until you think very deeply to what the author's message is about, people jump to the conclusion that it's all about her past relationships, and that's true in part, but it's not all her songs are about her past relationships, because she's a poet writer, some of her songs are just fictional stories, she visualizes in her creative mind, I hope you continue to enjoy the ride with the mysterious genius Taylor Swift 😊❤

“Slipped away like a bottle of wine” I aways interpret that as how quickly you and a friend can finish a bottle of wine without realizing how fast the time has gone by. So the summer flew by because they were having fun and she was so in love. Also, these characters are supposed to be in high school but I think they are written from the perspective when they are older. Reflecting back on this romance.

The best thing about this trilogy is how, where the songs reference each other (for example, “get in the car” in August and then in Betty, “James get in”. Then in Cardigan “you’d be standing in my front porch light” and in Betty, “I’m here on your doorstep” etc.), it happens at the same time stamp in the songs 🤯 One of these is at 2:47 (2+4+7=13) and one is at 3:13 (13 mins from the number 3 - the songs are a trilogy). Cannot comprehend.

I think "never have I ever before" could mean "I've never been the other woman before" or "I've never cheated" "Sipped away like a bottle of wine" makes me think of how sometimes when you're spending time with someone you really enjoy and are drinking, you have drank a whole bottle of wine and didn't even realize it. It's just gone in a whirlwind of a good time. "Wishing I could write my name on [your back]" makes me think of when you are laying behind someone you're in a relationship with and you'll write your name or "I love you" on their back with your finger. But augustine can't because James isn't hers. She's just the other woman.

I find it interesting with the end and the repeating “for the hope of it all” kinda feels like she’s begging and pleading to be the one. Holding out hope that he will choose her even tho she knows he’s gonna choose Betty. It feels like the “pick me, choose me, love me” speech Meredith gives Derrick in Grays Anatomy.

Actually, this girl doesn't have a name. But Taylor said in her mind, her né is Augustine, and the fans followed her. And to me it is about the virginity thing, cuz they were teenagers back at that time. "When you are young, they assume you know nothing" and "I'm only 17, I don't anything, but I know I miss you" and the wine part is the reflection that Augustine makes when she's older. And, on a side note, folklore is an album that you can interpret it in many different ways and one of thise is when you decide that all the songs make up a whole story about the same characters. For example, illicit affairs could be Augustine perspective as well The 1 could be Betty or James saying after they break up, etc...

Here's an interesting take on the chorus. She described August in 2 (contrasting) ways: 1. August slipped away into a moment in time // Looking back, August felt like it passed by so quickly 2. August sipped away like a bottle of wine // But when they were in it, it's as if time's passing slow... until it ended. It felt like these 2 ways for her because the guy was hers. "Meet me behind the mall" this one is play with words as well. It could be written as MEET ME BEHIND 'THEM' 'ALL' This love affair is illicit, so they are hiding, hence BEHIND THE MALL.

I will say it till I'm blue in the face but swifties assume James cheated... WE DO NOT KNOW HE CHEATED. It's more like Betty and James grew up destined to be and were maybe flirting and then he betrayed her by hooking up with August during the summer until he realised Betty was always the one. Taylor herself has said Cardigan is Betty looking back at a time they almost lost one another but that Betty and James end up together.
