The gray tips supplied with the S12 makes the sound fuller and also removes the very slight upper mids emphasis. In this combination it’s the most natural sounding set in my collection.

There Is also a mod where people plug up the vents of the S12. It's supposedly increases bass response but from what I hear from demos, it just kinda rolls off harsh highs and sort of gives the impression of more bass. I haven't heard them irl though.

This was a very detailed comparison. Thank you for doing such an excellent job of presenting this, and for keeping the parameters within a controlled range to allow the music reproduction to be the determining factor. I am new to the IEM world, and after watching a variety of KZbin reviews, and reading some blog reviews, I settled on purchasing an AudioQuest Cobalt DAC, and the 7Hz Timeless IEMs. To say I’m amazed is an understatement. The sound production from the 7Hz Timeless suits my musical tastes very well. And as you’ve mentioned in your review, they are so good that they reveal flaws in the recordings. Talk about accurate sound production! One issue I’ve had with the Timeless is related to the cables. The MMCX connectors on the Timeless are curved, rather than straight, and I find that there’s something different enough about the shape of my left outer ear that the curved MMCX connector makes contact with it in a way to cause the IEM to work its way loose from my ear. I’ve tried every tip that came with the Timeless, but the problem is still there. Only by rotating the MMCX connector forward, so the cable doesn’t loop behind my ear, does it allow the IEM to stay in my ear. I don’t have this problem on the right ear. So, I’m searching for a replacement cable with straight MMCX connectors, that is moderately priced ($30-50), and is a higher quality than the cable that came with the Timeless. You showed a gold cable with straight MMCX connectors in the video. Is that what you used for all tests? What cable is it?

So glad you liked the review! As for the cables, I only used the stock cables with each IEM, but check out OE Audio. They sell a few nice cables that are very lightweight so they conform well to your required shape and don't have any built in curves. I've used the DualOFC cable and quite like it.

Thanks SL! Yes, I got a new camera a while back thanks to a generous donation from a channel patron. It's technically not as good as my main camera, but has a few tricks up it's sleeve (like 250fps slow motion) that has given me more creative freedoms 🙂 So glad you're enjoying the results!

Ha that’s funny, I’ve got the 2021 LCD-XC, the OH10 and the timeless as well but not the S8F. How do those compare in your mind and you feel they’re worth their asking price? Those are three of my top rotation headphones/IEMs as well btw, and also I include the Mangird Xenns Up and the Clears to the right up there among my top 5-10 for sure. But I also love other stuff like the Grado Hemps, the 6xx is obviously just classic and fantastic and beautiful. I’m waiting on the the Olina to get here as well..super excited to hear it. I’ve never heard the Oxygen before so I’m especially stoked. I really wanna try out the Yume Midnight as I’ve wanted to try the OG Yume since it released but this seems even more appealing with my music library and preferences. I’m thinking I’m going to go for the MEST MKII in custom next, and then further down the road perhaps give either the 1266 TC or the new Diana TC a shot. The audio world is such an excellent place to be rn! I’ve been curious about the Kato for some time now but I’m trying to be a little less compulsive in my shopping habits with audio gear so I’ve held off. I recently saw BGGAR release a review of the Tripowin Lea in which he compared the tuning to the Kato and highlighted their similarities. So I bought those to check out the tuning and am using them rn. I also received the CRN (for similar reason, wanted to check out B2D-like tuning on the cheap) to try just yesterday and am also waiting on the DQ6S to arrive. Lots of fun releases all over the market at different prices and in all sorts of fun categories!

@@davidcoons89 totally agree with you with compulsiveness in this hobby. My top 5 would be the OG MEST, OG Monarch, UP, Timeless, and the Obsidian. Waiting on the EJ07m Kinda Lava, the Olina, the DQ6s and the CRA. I feel are all totally worth their asking price. Debating on the Eternal and the Tea 2. The OG teas would come in after the Obsidian's in my list. Almost pulled the trigger in the Lea because it was compared to the Kato.

@@PassionforSound I had that problem in the beginning but now it only happens rarely when the body of RU6 touches the smartphone. Just keep the metal body of the RU6, a little away from the smartphone using the supplied type c cable and the issue goes away completely!

Awesome shootout, definitely agree with you on the Timeless. I find them a bit cool in the upper-bass/low mids and what I think that does is allow a lot more in the recording to have ample volume to shine through. Plus they're well resolved. I dig the microdetails, they've yet to come across as fatiguing. I believe the secret sauce of the Timeless is its ability to present a bunch of different elements of a recording in a complimentary/balanced fashion. Consider it a high coherency IEM if you will. As a value proposition I'm most interested in how it'd stack up against the Dunu Falcon Pro because that IEM certainly looks the part. Appreciate the video as always, cheers! ✌️

The shape is only external cosmetics on the 7Hz so don't let that worry you - they're comfortable. The S12 is great too though (just not quite as good as the Timeless). I haven't heard of any QC issues. What's been happening?

Do you think using mojo 2 with these is going to greatly / significantly benifit them? (Most curious about 7Hz) I really wish you had a review series about the combination of best Iem matching with best portable dac amp And same for over ears in different categories open/closed dynamic/planars. Since no matter how interesting a headphone is, their synergy with different systems have a very different outcome but since you have the access to most things it'd be a great consumer advice series. Currently I'm most curious about what combination of iem with portable dacamp would be considered a budget (not endgame) but genuinely great purchase for a long time. 7hz/ Legacy 5 + Mojo 2 / Gryphon something like that. Sorry for my long comment.

No need for an apology 🙂 I don't tend to worry about or focus on synergies unless something has a very specific flaw or emphasis that needs fixing (e.g. HD800 needing a smoother, warmer amp to fix it's treble-emphasised sound). In my experience, choosing an IEM or headphone that suits your tastes and pairing it with the best source you can afford is the ideal recipe. That means, for portable audio and based on what I've heard so far, the Mojo 2 with any good IEM that suits your tastes will be the best setup you can get

Of all this, I kept only S12 for myself (by the way, they are now only 110$). I'm thinking of getting a second pair... Let the C12 burn for 100 hours, pick up good nozzles with a 4-5mm exit, take a moderately technical one with an emphasis on the midrange DAC - and you will know bliss ! 😇😍

Very well constructed review. I would say though that I have used the Shuoer S12 in many ways, and had a couple of hundred hours on them, balanced and unbalanced. On concentrated listening the S12 sounds different with good power and balanced. I have listened through 3 phones and three balanced amps and the S12 definitely does not sound the same from a phone. Single ended phones sound noticeably different to balanced amps. I do agree though, the S12 is a very good IEM.

DS, what you're hearing when you're using them balanced is not a change in the earphone, it's a change in the amp/circuit. These earphones are so sensitive that having more power won't change the sound in any way at all. I don't say this to be critical, but people new to the hobby are often misled by these types of statements and suddenly think they need to spend lots of money running everything balanced. What's more important is getting the best possible quality of amplification (and DAC), not how much power it has or whether it's balanced

Your phone will drive the S12s just fine. Quality will improve with a dongle (external DAC/amp) but it's not required

My challenge on single IEM reviews is that most people want comparisons for context so they're actually still multi-IEM reviews where I need to find some common ground (to a point). One with title (and content) saying 'post-hype' and video release date a month or two later than it's actual release can intrigue a lot of shoppers. ✌️ You did similar with may and now timeless.. One question...how does driver size impact user setup/implementation...to get the most out of a particular planar IEM? For instance, with 7Hz as benchmark (@ 14.2mm driver diameter), the S12 is about 8.9% bigger in surface area, while the P2 is about 28.7% smaller; assuming a circular geometry. In terms of balanced/unbalanced and power. Also, relative receptiveness to EQ'íng. These are relatively material differences and I am curious as to how much influence driver size has on the overall range of capabilities. Just curious.

My intuition personally would tell me that while of course driver size plays a role in the types factors in the questions you’re asking, I think there is far more impacting those criteria than driver size alone, even when dealing with a planar driver. That’s just my personal thought on the matter tho so please don’t take that as me saying anything authoritatively etc

I think that's accurate. To a degree, the size of the driver will help to move more air, but that doesn't necessarily mean much on its own. Other factors with planars are things like the strength of the magnets and tightness of the diaphragm. Then, for all headphones, there's the tuning of the internal chamber and damping of unwanted resonance, etc. so the driver alone is a relatively small (although important) piece of the puzzle

Very good review, subscribed! One thing tho- the power is actually an issue with them. The fact that they will play loud stright out of the phone or a dongle, doesnt mean they will reach their full potential. We shouldnt forget that they are planars and planars love more power to really shine. I would recommend a powerful dap or an amp which will tighten everything up for even better controll and staging.

Thanks for the sub. What you're hearing with better devices is a better circuit, not the result of more power. Once you have enough power, no amount more will sound better, but a better circuit will. For example, two Apple dongles that are identical except for power output would both sound the same and a higher quality device with less power will actually sound better, so long as it has enough power to comfortably drive the headphones below any point of distortion for the device.

Depending on your budget, the Questyle M15 is amazing, as is the Shanling UP5. At lower levels, there are the EarMen Sparrow and the Moondrop Dawn Pro.

I used this review to select my next buds after my Timeless fell apart. The shell for the right earpiece just separated due to the glue failing. Unfortunately this happened when I was unplugging the cord to comnect my Bluetooth wings so there was nothing to hold the port in place and so it pulled out the wiring which snapped. I reached out to Linsoul and theyre asking for photos and video. While I wait for that to be resolved I picked up S12 Pros with an dual pin to MMCX adapter. Sound is very comparable and the build quality is robust. I also use the Quedelix. Tremendous value if the customer service experience justifies going this route vs Sony, Sennheiser, etc.

I have the Timeless and I love it...as you say the first what strikes me is the tone and natural balance with a bit boosted bass♥️😎 ...I have to say as for the P1...Iam really tempted to get the og P1...I think there is some special magic in that one...+all the faults and haaard to drive...but still I think there is some magic the P1 plus might loose a bit...

There are the reviewers who talk dynamic driver timbre v planar timbre. Is that a thing? If you listen to an IEM can you tell if it's planer or dynamic by it's timbre?

I personally don't believe so. BA IEMs do have a certain sound in the bass, but I've still been fooled. This IS one of those areas where I believe a blind test (in the sense of not knowing what drivers were inside a particular IEM) would show no consistent ability to identify one from the other. For example, the P1 Plus and P2 have a very similar delivery that's a bit blunted, but the S12 and Timeless don't do that so it varies depending on the design, not the driver I think.

I own the P1, Mangird Tea, Timeless, and I've tried a bunch of lesser IEMs. I find myself going back to the Timeless for most genres except acoustic (Tea shines here). When I feel like a change - I'll throw on my Hifiman Anandas or my Focal Elegias. At its price point the Timeless is incredible. It makes me wonder if I was to buy a $700-$1K+ IEM... would I be disappointed in the diminishing returns given the substantial step up in price? By the way, another reviewer described the S12 as a basshead's dream after he used EQ to push the bass response up. Might be worth playing with EQ to see if S12 may have a place in a collection as a basshead planar IEM.

I've got a review coming with the Shuoer EJ07M and it's clearly better than the Timeless so I don't think diminishing returns are a problem if you choose right. As for the EQ thing, I have to limit how deep I go on everything because I have to keep videos to a watchable length and also move on and review all the other gear that's piled up waiting for me so I can't get to stuff like optimal IEMs for EQ, specific tip/cable combos, etc. Sorry!

Obviously depends on your ears and what you are looking for but that being said I bought the Fir Audio 5x5 & M3 sets and 64 Audio U6T & Duo sets; all over $1000 and I hardly use anything else. All I can say is if you have the cash for a $1000+ set, do your research, read a lot of reviews and check out graphs and take the plunge. I like my bass and the 4 sets mentioned deliver in spades. You might also like to check out the Campfire Audio Range as their IEMs seem to cater for most tastes (and pockets)

I thoroughly enjoyed the Timeless until curiosity got the better of me and I tried the s12's. For 70 usd less(as of now on amazon w/coupon), there isnt any competition between thsm and just about any other option IMO...for now that is. Being planar(inherent quality?) driven, they take EQ VERY well, almost as if intended. A few db down at 7 and 14k, you essentially have the Timeless sound minus the greater low end, but that's what EQ is for, cuz planar I suppose. But having used them for a good while and comparing them with the Timeless fastidiously. The most discernible difference I found is that the s12s soundstage, while near identical in width, seems to have more depth and height. Potentially due to better tuning or the sparkly treble, but it lends to a greater perceived image + separation. This was most obvious listening to Miles Davis, Yosi Horikawa, and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake OST. Larger orchestrations and complex scores are truly an experience. Just wish the soundstage was a bit wider, too bad I cant EQ for more lol.

I think the Moondrop KATO is a bit reminiscent of the HD800. The Custom Art FIBAE 3x3 and Kiwi Ears Orchestra could also be considered. None are exactly the same because they're IEMs, but there are similarities between all of them.

The 4.4mm allows the use of balanced source devices and will often provide better sound quality due to the optimisation of those devices. I like to get balanced connections like the 4.4mm because you can always get an adapter from 4.4mm to 3.5mm, but you can't go from 3.5mm to 4.4mm. I hope that makes sense...

Thanks for the review. I trusted your POV on the Timeless vs the OH10 and ordered both together with he Moondrop Kato. It did not take too long to put two IEMs back in the boxes and return them. (all the impressions below are just my opinions - subjectivity is king here). 1) The Timeless was a bad fit for me, but even when I 'ensured' the fit to ensure a good seal, I disliked the tonality. There was bass but it lacked realism, the mids were detailed but had no soul, the high end was OK but grainy. 2) The Kato was better, beautifully built and a decent sound - but came over as thinner and less emotionally involving than the OH10 Obsidian. 3) The OH10 Obsidian was a surprise. I was expecting bass-heavy, warm and maybe 'cloying' from some reviewers descriptions. But no. They have a bottom end that can gum-up, but mostly they are simply lovely. What's your word? - euphonious, I think. They have plenty of detail and resolution but, unlike the other two here, they don't shove it in your face. I love these IEMs. They fit well (heavy but I don't feel them) and sonically they remind me of my Sennheisser HD600s - a staggering achievement I think for a $200 in-ear device. I'm still re-listening to all my favorite Jazz and Accoustic tracks - that's a what a music reproduction devoice should achieve. It may not be rapture, but its close enough. Btw, I'm playing them through a little FIIO BTR5 and its clean, bright and powerful. The OH10s sound even nicer through my Schiit Asgard 3, so they really scale. I'm still grinning!!

The 7hz timeless definitely meets and exceeds the hype. To me it is the best value in the head-fi world. You just have to find the ear tips that work best for you, it toook me about three days of testing, before I landed on the blue silicone tips that come with them. The only thing I would disagree with here is the power requirements. The 7hz Timeless is a little inefficient compared to most IEMs, so it does sound a lot better with around 35-50 mw. I use mine with a DD HiFi TC35i. It is a great match. The Timeless will sound even better from something like my RME ADI-2 or iFi Gryphon, but there is very little improvement to be had sonically by trying different sources with these. Which is part of why they are so good. I EQ everything.....except these. For me they require zero EQ. Brilliant.

I sold it after 2 weeks. It has No depth unnatural sound, vocals seem foggy can't capture emotions, bass lack definition so you won't hear details like dynamic driver or audeze lcd3. Very limited tall soundstage. Good for price but has many flows if you seek better natural realife sound you will sell it.

That's a really tough call. I'd probably lean towards the KATO because it's a little more natural sounding, but the S12 has better bass extension so it will depend on preferences.

I have the Timeless and I really like it. I think the bass is just right for my taste, vocals are great, the treble has enough spark for my genre of music. I listen mostly Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Gojira, Metallica, sometimes jazz and Daft Punk. I really like the presentation of this iem. What I feel is lacking in the Timeless is soundstage depth. The width is enough for my taste but I feel it lacks depth allot. I would like to add here, Timeless sounds much much better when I drive them with Shanling UA1 Pro. It was like Timeless was waiting to be driven by some amp/dac 😅 It definitely sounds amazing but I feel the depth is still lacking. I feel all instruments are lined from right to left in good width but no depth as such. Everything felt fairly wide and right in front of my face. I felt Kato and S12 had better depth when compared to Timeless. But in other areas Timeless is winner for me. Nevertheless, looking forward to your recommendations for amp/dac and will test them. Ah, that's why you're missing depth. If you can get something like the Questyle M15, Cayin RU6 (maximum depth) or even the Shanling UA2 or UA5, I think you'll notice a nice step up.

you also have to realize that your ears, your tympanic membrane is all different from everyone else. how you register sound is going to be different than how I register sound that's just the nature of being human. and what you've been exposed to over your life whether it's been really loud music, loud at work, in the military from my point. so maybe the sound stage that you're referring to doesn't sound as large cuz you may actually have a little bit of heat loss or damage

No, it's more than just the frequency response. The S12 is excellent for the price and I definitely recommend it, but the performance of every IEM or headphone is about the behaviour of its driver as well as it's frequency response so EQ alone can't make them the same.

There are lots of factors so there are probably things I don't know about that designers do, but some of the things I'm aware of are the natural resonance of the driver, how well the driver is damped to stop it vibrating when it shouldn't and the speed with which the driver is able start and stop also play a part in its delivery ofusic and overall characteristics. There's also the internal resonance of the shell and how long specific frequencies can linger after a note is played.

Yes, the timeless is truly exceptional for the price and offers quite good micro-details and total resolution and strong technicalities. But the S12 is excellent in its own right, and also offers things that add to its value and uniqueness. It’s cable is quite nice imo! Very different IEMs. The i3 Pro is very flat in its FR so the Timeless sounds a lot fuller in the bass and more exciting as a result. The i3 Pro is a nice IEM if you like a flat frequency response, but the Timeless is, to me, more fun and produces a large soundstage too

The good news is that there are fantastic products at every price level, but there are benefits to be had by stepping up in price tiers if you choose well. There are some more expensive IEMs that are no better (or worse) so just do some research and be sure to align your tastes to what you choose because some reviewers have very specific tastes in sound signature, but their better might not be your better.

@@PassionforSound Of course, by 2023 I meant nowadays. I have Timeless. I was thinking of buying the ej07m but I don't know if there will be much difference...the ej07m is 550€ right now. By the way, thanks for the recommendation of the sv023. Sounds fantastic to me. More fun, detailed than my Edxs.

The EJ07M is a lovely IEM and quite different from the Timeless. If it's one you're already interested in then it's definitely not a bad option to try out

Decided this past week to buy the S12 ($141) and the Olina ($97); together for about 10% above the 7Hz retail price. The price difference of the 7Hz to me is not justified anymore, considering the ability to tweak the S12 with optimal tips and/or the ease with which to EQ these planars. IMO. That being said, if I already owned the 7Hz, I would not buy the S12...but I might buy the Olina (which is too compelling at its price point)! In any event, can't complain at all about any of these three IEM's...the performance at all of their respective prices is great for consumers. Good times since 2021, when it comes to the IEM market. Which is nice, considering the rest of the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

I already own the Timeless & decided to jump on the Olina. I’m curious to see what HBB has done, at $100, with a driver that was formerly in an almost $300 item.

@@arthurhaywood2184 Yes, I was ready to buy the 7Hz back in January...then came the S12 which left me waiting again for reviews. When the Olina was announced, I decided to keep my budget target and go for S12+ Olina. In then end, I have probably dumped about $600 on 12 IEM's instead of just one or two.; not to mention the 8 x TWS earbuds. Of course, I will not get into the peripherals....cables, etc. Got to stop this madness...though I admit...it's fun. My teens treat my office like an audio store/warehouse.

Yes. You should never try to compare graphs between people/websites as it all depends on the measurement rig, compensation applied, amplitude scale, etc. My graphs are really only relevant for comparisons within my videos. It's also worth noting that with the compensation curves I use, a flat response line would theoretically represent a mostly true-to-life tuning. Of course it's all an approximation though because everyone's ears are slightly different and that alters our perception of the sound.

An IEM needs to sound natural and the sound should be and image of the original recording, music needs to be warm, accurate, and natural. The only way I find natural and exact sounding music is using Beryllium or Titanium coated drivers. I have been enjoying the Tripowin Olina for about (3) days and the sound is more alive than when I use the Oxygen. So for really balanced beautiful music I recommend spending a low amount of money for a higher value IEM. Nothing I tried had a sound like the Oxygen, they are not a hype they are excellent (but bad fitting) and the Olina all I can say is they upgraded the Oxygen.....I put them up to about 20% volume and the micro details are simply unbelievable. Listen to an IEM at 30% to 40% power if they sound good on low volume then you found a winner......Planar is old technology and all they are doing is beating a dead horse !

I haven't heard the Olina or Oxygen yet, but I think you're making claims that are just a little too broad and generalised. We all have different tastes and preferences so what's right for you might not be right for others. I'm glad you've found something that suits your tastes though 🙂

Unfortunately, my experience with S12 is mostly negative. Sure, it's got the "technicalities", but tonality is bad. My playlist is 95% rock and the sound of drum kit is completely unnatural on S12. Cymbals are too loud and piercing and drums are sounding too strained. Planars are kind of known of their flexibility with EQ, but must say no luck in that direction, also. With EQ tonality becomes agreeable, but technicalities are taking a hit. Sound become smoother, but grainy. And drums still sound strained. It seems to me that planars just cannot reproduce timbre neither correctly nor pleasantly. On positive side, I must praise the fit as S12 has nozzle width that are comfortable even for people with narrower ear canals. I also like the look. But, I don't think I will go for another planar IEM soon.

Yes. The S12 isn't perfect. From memory, I favoured other IEMs in this video.

Tried S12.For my surprise my Blon BL03 sounds much better! S12 is just too bright and soundstage is nowhere near to Blon BL03! So save yourself tons of money and buy BLON!

There are some things that the S12 does better so I wouldn't say it's a clear cut thing, but I'm glad to hear that you've identified the sound that you enjoy. No need to spend more if you're happy with what you have.

Both of the dynamic options - timeless and s12 have remarkably muddy sound. Returned promptly. Chi fi has rabid fans mostly people who haven’t heard better balanced sound.
