They're three of the most talented female singers of all time - Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. All superstars in their own right, but they're also great friends, and over the years they've come together to make exquisite music.
But Linda Ronstadt faces a crippling disease that is slowly robbing her of her ability to sing. Undaunted, Linda's facing her illness with tremendous courage, helped by her two dear friends. And, as Steve Pennells discovered, these three women still have one last collaboration to share with their fans.
This story originally aired on the 11th September 2016.

I went to a Dolly concert at Interlochen MI in the 90s. I knew where she was staying in town, so I left a note at the hotel desk for her letting her know we would be in the front row and it was our 40th anniversary. I asked her to sing "Eagle When She Flies" for my wife. She came on. Walked back and forth. Nodded questioningly to me and I returned the nod with a Thumbs Up. She then stood right there and gave the entire concert to me and my wife. She talked to us, asked if we were having a good time. She dedicated EAGLE" to my wife and me. She sang "Why'd You Come In Here Looking Like That" to me. She sang "He's Alive" at the end. I cried. She blew us a kiss before she left the stage for the last time. It was like having a private concert. My wife was REALLY impressed. Dollie Parton is one classy lady for sure.

As a singer (from Tucson oddly enough) who has lost a lot of my voice from smoking damage, I feel for Linda so much. I can still sing, but it's not what it was and it kills me to not be able to soar any more, but trot and stumble now. (I was training in opera at one time). Yes, I can hear it in my mind, as Linda said, but I know she is putting on a brave face and she would give her left and right arm to have an hour of her voice back. I feel for her and cry for her loss.

@@kathleenkaufmann2084 I understood this so much also!! I’ve sung at points in my life but also had things like developing allergies after my first child-I completely lost middle C to F, so I sang tenor for about 3 years. I could feel in my vocal cords where my note was, but if I tried adding air they just slammed shut. Torture. Now I have a neurological autoimmune illness that, when bad, mucks with both articulating at the back of my mouth and tongue, and swallowing. And breathing. My great-grandfather went to London around 1900 to study tonic sol-fa, then came back to start vocal music programs in 6 colleges I know of around the country. One was an Ag college in Roswell NM 😊. His mother & siblings actually supported themselves as a quartet till he started teaching, so I think of them often. Some things do help but I wish I could figure out how to just Relax my larynx so my voice could flow! I’m so grateful Linda did such a range of music!! At least we do get to keep hearing her. Such a rich voice and she could do anything she wanted with it! My littlest grandson loves her voice, but he loves these tight harmonies even more, which makes me silly-happy!!

Just to clarify: She specifically sang two specific styles of Mexican music ranchera and primarily mariachi music, not simply “Mexican” music. There is no one “Mexican” style of music - its varied just like it is here. Lots of beautiful Mexican music traditions that deserve their own flowers!

I’ve loved Linda’s voice since I first heard Different Drum on the radio; I was about 8 or 9, and she was all over the radio. Long, Long Time, When Will I Be Loved-just such great songs. As soon as I was old enough to buy records with my allowance, I was buying her singles. In tenth grade 1981, she was still killing it, the queen of rock ‘n roll. All through high school, hers was the only music I would play in my car-my sister and my friends would just roll their eyes and say, “oh no, it’s LR again???” And I’d say YUP and blast Livin’ in the USA or Mad Love. Just such greatness. Such vocal control and depth in her voice. Even now, in 2023, I want to cry when I listen to her, knowing that these recordings are all we have. I just want more! But I’m so thankful I heard Different Drum that day in the early 70s. It changed my life.

There is still good music out there....it is WE who have changed, gotten older, our tastes developed....so we are choosier and, in a way, more "sophisticated"....but when Gaga began, we wrote her off...but no one writes her off, today. She has proven time and again, using her as the example, that she can sing anything she wants to...from The Sound of Music to pop to standards. The music today might not be what we are used to but there are good artists everywhere. Remember, people my age, 50ish, wrote off Dolly Parton when we were young, but then we began to understand her and her style and now...dude....I love her and the made country music a part of my life. Not a huge part, but a part I appreciate.

My Mum introduced me to Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton in my childhood and I discovered Emmy Lou Harris years later. I have distinct memories of singing along to Linda Ronstadts Prisoner in Disguise album, Dollys Jolene, Coat of Many Colours, 9 to 5, and the soundtrack to Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. I appreciate these songs in adulthood in a way I could not understand them as a child, having said that, Coat of Many Colours is one I understood then and made a huge impression. It underlined the principles taught to me that time, thoughtfulness, care and love are more precious than anything that can ever be bought.

@markuse3472 I’m confident he meant Emmylou Harris because of the context. Emmylou Harris was and is a magnificently gifted artist, but her level of success never approached Linda Rondstadt. She was highly appreciated by other artists, but widespread popular success, especially outside of country, was elusive. In the 1970s and into the 1980s, you’d have had to live under the proverbial rock to not know Linda Rondstadt. The Willie Nelson comment basically covers Emmylou Harris’ situation: those who knew her music loved it and many of those who weren’t country fans just didn’t have an awareness of her.

Catherine C Rooney, it is rather perplexing, isn't? In the recent documentary that just aired on television for the first time on New Year's Day on CNN, Peter Asher seemed to point out this paradox. He said she was so certain about her ideas, but not her singing. I used to be a speech pathologist, and I know we hear ourselves differently from how others hear us, because we hear ourselves through bone conduction in addition to aurally. I really don't know what Ms. Ronstadt was hearing, but to my untrained ear, I never heard a false or sour note. All I can say is I am so thankful she does not have the power to remove from online the songs she felt she did a disservice to. Heard her say she wish she could-can you imagine?
@jamesmcinnis208
@jamesmcinnis208 4 жыл бұрын
Huge celebrities, the good ones, recognize the need for humility. I think self criticism is Ronstadt's way of being humble. I don't mean to say that she's insincere; only that she's willing to share her perfectionism publicly and that she's able to see the flaws in her earlier work. As far as removing her "imperfect" songs, I think the threat is half-hearted at most, a way to convey her cringe reaction when she realizes how she could have improved on them. I submit that the imperfections (frankly, I can't hear them) are what makes those songs good and gives them their humanity.

@@jamesmcinnis208 Thank you for your thoughtful response, James. I guess this theory can apply to all of us who care about what we do, but for those of us who toil in relative anonymity, we can grow and learn without our "growing pains" being recorded and frozen in time. The unflattering photo rarely makes it into the family photo album if we have any say over it. We are so fortunate to have the technology to observe Ms. Ronstadt's "learning curve."

All three of these LADIES are amazing! Dolly is probably the most underrated of the three, because she spent so many years in the shadow of Porter. But, when she broke out on her own, the light shined brighter than could have been imagined. Emmylou was someone that I fell in love with the first time I heard her voice. Willie Nelson summed it up best, "There are two kinds of people, those that love Emmylou and those that have never heard of her". As for Linda, in her day, she could sing the phone book and people would stand there amazed. All three of them are so humble and so supportive of each other, not a jealous between them. I was blessed to see Emmylou and Linda together shortly before her parkinsons became public and I will treasure that memory forever. Thank God we have those recordings to remind us of what artistry really is!!!

I was devouring live shows all up and down the coast....so much music was happening! These 3 really do sound angelic in their harmonies. And dolly is our national treasure, first saw her on the porter Wagoner show and I surely have loved hervsince that loooong ago broadcast. [Edited for grammar]

I love all three of them. I was just thinking, I would love to see Dolly one day without the wigs and makeup and nails. She is so naturally beautiful. Although I love her persona too. I've been in love with Dolly my whole life. Linda's voice is like a rocket red glare. And when I was in the seminary I used to listen to Emmylou singing Making Believe and I Live On A Big Blue Ball. And Trio. Emmlylou has such a gorgeous stirring quality to her voice. All three of them . . . my goodness. God has blessed us mightily with these three.

... I grew up with these three... They have always been some of my favorites.... I have seen them all together and separate in concert... Magic happens when any one of them opens their mouths to sing!...
