There’s a starter curse, something called “the crystal song”. I think it’s a much better jumping in point.

The Crystal Song is not part of the basic box, but there is a “Starter Set” for €10 more that contains it. I would very much recommend that, because it makes for a relatively short first game. Having said that, I played the Voracious Goddess twice, once solo and once with two players, and it never took anywhere near the 17 hours you reported. You must have been really unlucky in overlooking some of the clues the game gives you.

@@ToboldStoutfoot Haha "must have been really unlucky overlooking the clues" is a very generous code for You're a big dummy! And, you're completely right, I definitely was, haha :) What wasted a lot of my time was that I both misread the map and then when I first was to go over the river heading west, after you get out of the jungle area, my "fog" card was a giant stone that irreparably blocked my way, that only moved with a check I couldn't complete, or when another one of them appeared somewhere else on the map. So I tried to go up and make my way over, but then it threw me into the ice land, which I wandered around in for a loooooong time. I didn't mind, because I really liked the environment of the ice and that particular hunting spot up there was neat, but then I felt preeettty dumb when I realized, oh no, this is not the way to get around. And then having to backtrack to the temples I missed was significantly less fun I think because I had spent so much time wandering.

I mostly enjoy 7th Continent for the exploration experience, not in any way competitively “for the win”. That way, one never feels like a “dummy”. Once you figured out the whole hunting mechanic, and basically “solved” the survival challenge, you aren’t actually obliged to go through the motions repeatedly, if that isn’t fun to you. You can play until you run out of cards, and then simply shuffle your whole discard deck back. There is actually an official variant of the game that allows you to do it once. But you could like do it repeatedly and just count how many reshuffles it took you to finish a curse. Next time you’ll play better and need less reshuffles.
@RoomandBoardReviews
@RoomandBoardReviews 2 жыл бұрын
@@ToboldStoutfoot This feels like completely the ideal way to play it. I definitely near the end of the curse, I should have failed a check and it would have been real bad for me if I had, so I just ... didn't. I really like the idea of counting your reshuffles, so you have the pressure and bar, but you give yourself a break when you're already so far in.

Once I realised you could game the hunting in this game, I just changed the rules for myself so that whenever i come across a hunting area, I just completely reset my action deck, and put as much food as i want into my inventory. It's the same outcome with less manual labour :D

Thank you very much for calling out the uselessness of kickstarter bling. We definitely need more opinions like these, to help us get out of kickstarter-backing addiction. I spent the Easter break with my friend going through voracious goddess and we ran into the same frustration you did. We actually quit playing voracious goddess after 15 hours, when we arrived all the way to the final point and the game told us we had to return to the middle of the island, to go through a dungeon we had skipped. We’ve decided to try again during the summer break but only with a shorter curse. Hopefully that will work out. The exclusively tactile nature of the game doesn’t bother me that much; I have to say, I played destinies recently and while the story and gameplay were excellent, my eyes were sore from reading the screen text after 3 hours; it felt like I had played a videogame rather than a boardgame. Another important issue to note how outdated the game is in comparison with more modern sandbox-game attempts like sleeping gods is that, even though the kickstarter came out in 2017 as you say (or 2016 I don’t remember), this first kickstarter itself was delivered with a delay of a year and a half if I remember correctly. Which means that this game was actually designed in 2013 and we’ve come a long way since then. For a slightly different take on how frustrating 7th continent is, I strongly recommend the No Pun Included review of Sleeping Gods, where they describe the shortcomings of sandbox games (including 7th Continent), ever since the “Choose your own adventure” books of the 1970’s. But once again, for me the highlight of your review is explicitly calling out useless kickstarter bling (like you did with the XMen United kickstarter and its 5 Wolverines and 3 Cyclops). All the gratitude from me to you.

I liked your presentation and relaxed demeanor - I can see this channel growing in the future!The “exploit” you’re describing around the 7:00 minute mark however, is actually you making a rules mistake. You should banish (as in remove from the game) the green hunting grounds when you replace them with the gold - harder to hunt - version. This gold version can be reset and reused, but since its quite hard to do so this is not the exploit you make it out to be. In fact, this is intentional design.
@RoomandBoardReviews
@RoomandBoardReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the clarification! I guess I never really encountered that because I just left it set up when I was going through it, and it's been a while since I played it. Aren't there usually two green ones before the gold ones? I felt with those two I generally had ample time to get a ton of meat, and I guess it just felt repetitive after I figured out I needed to stock up. But thanks for pointing it out, and for watching!
@WispNL
@WispNL 3 жыл бұрын
@@RoomandBoardReviews Aha, so you’re saying that even with saving once and restarting you are able to acquire enough food / meat to make it to the next hunting ground / save spot? Something is off there; if it were really that easy we wouldn’t have the plethora of complaints that this game is so hard and too survival focused. People are dying many times before finally lifting a curse.
@RoomandBoardReviews
@RoomandBoardReviews 3 жыл бұрын
@@WispNL Yeah I don't know, that was just my experience. I definitely had a lucky find of an idol that added a ton of cards back into my deck, which was clutch when I was lost in a dungeon and low on food, but for the most part I generally had all the food I needed to get to the next place. Once I found the first one, I felt like they were fairly telegraphed, which I think is a good thing, that you know there's a hunting spot for each kind of area, definitely not a downside - I think a worse downside would be having to go out of your way to find it and then backtrack more, so not complaining about the placements.

Yeah I'd definitely recommend using any of the "friendly" rules, especially if you die a good chunk of time in. I was happy to restart the first time and use what I learned, felt like it was a little of a tutorial but afterwards and after looking at what the "friendly" options are which I always shy away from using this is one of the rare cases where I'd have liked to. Some others have mentioned as well that the other curses aren't nearly as long so starting with one of them instead of the voracious goddess recommended one might be a good thing as well, completing them quicker might make you feel more accomplished and have more fun. Hope you enjoy it!

7th Continent is definitely love it or hate it, and I love it. Having the extra expansions makes it more fun for me; more variability to the play sessions. The ‘story’ and lore of the island and the curses hits a theme and a tone that I love for some reason. The notebook was my favorite accessory and I’ve filled it with pages and pages of detailed notes, which help future sessions, especially with long gaps in between. I enjoy the min/max survival aspect, and taking notes is required for that on the harder curses. The notebook feels limited in size per page, but you can usually divide the map up in a logical way, and there’s enough room to make sufficient notes. Dying deep into a curse is very not-fun, and sometimes I’ll give myself leeway to bend the rules that a computer game wouldn’t give me. It’s not a perfect game, but the survival puzzle combined with the detailed story worked well for me. The game probably missed the marketing a bit by not fully explaining how much of a survival game it was. The 7th Citadel seems like it will have a similarly engaging story and like you said will fix those pain points.

I totally agree with the accessory critique. I bought them and found them not useful. In fact, the mat has creases/a raised ridge which I can not get out and therefore makes it rubbish cause it doesn't allow the cards to lay flat. I look forward to more of your videos.

Thank you! Been searching since I gave up and shelved all my 7th continent with expansions - having reached the very limit of my patience and endurance - for a reviewer who could crystalize my issues with this game. It was so very close to the experience i was searching for that I even got fished in to backing 7th Citadel. There were great moments in this game to be surre, but they were lost in a SLOG through drudgery and obtuse puzzles that all the fun was negated. Did you find that the cards cut your fingers? Sleeping Gods finally delivered on the promise 7th Continent whispered.

there are 2 ways to play 7th Continent : 1/ you play the regular rules and you do end up in a frustrating food hunt = YOU'LL HATE THE GAME 2/ you "house-rule" the food part and focus on exploration = GREAT GAME After 15h, i decided to create my own character that has special abilities : * Has a special back-pack where i could store unlimited food. * Could always make a fire for food purpose. * Could use some herbs (to add +1 or +2 cards taken back) * Had special "Trekking Shoes" = so moving was reduced by 1 card to pay for new location and going backward was free. I then didn't feel like cheating but using a unique "more balanced" mechanism and actually had fun creating this character with her "very" special abilities (based on a real french female explorer). -For "resetting the game" when going to a new location ! I just didn't do it ! Hihiii.. My table is big enough to start placing new map-tiles on another corner of it. So when i gotta come back to the previous map, i just moved back to another part of my table. -Finally, i did prefer the white box than the base game, BUT i waited 1 year before playing it to recharge my 7th continent's motivation. @RoomandBoardReviews
@RoomandBoardReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, I hope iSS Vanguard is good, but I didn't end up backing that one. I absolutely love Nemesis (a friend of mine went in on that one) and that convinced me to back Etherfields because I loved the concept of "picking a mask that speaks to you" as a mechanic. That sort of emotional connection they pitched in the initial stages I thought was a really neat concept, unfortunately haven't played more than one session with my group because of the pandemic, so figured I couldn't back another big campaign until that was done. And while I think their stuff is quality, and I'm a fan, I do think they get pretty silly about "spoilers" haha. Like, I'm not going to remember the art on a card 6 months later, you can show me something! I think that's part of why Etherfields wasn't super well received by some, because the mystery surrounding even the game mechanics required some people to back without fully knowing what they were getting.

So just a quick note to anyone who watch the strategy portion of the video, most hunting spots include the Green to Gold card Icon once used. That Icon means banish the green card, meaning it wouldn't come back after saving and resuming the game.
@RoomandBoardReviews
@RoomandBoardReviews 2 жыл бұрын
There was a big conversation about this over on BGG when I first posted it, that I missed. But I'm not meaning that you can repillage the easier green portion, I'm meaning that you can repillage the gold portion over and over again because you can refresh the meat. There was also a thread by the designer when the game first came out, where he said something along a similar lines, which made me think that was an intentional design element. And sure pillaging the gold is much harder, but it's not impossible, and even if you're netting one extra card back into your deck, that's still a net positive of an endless supply of hunting, that results in an even longer grind.

Thanks for this review. Well, as I have to agree to some things you said in your video - not to that extend - I also have to disagree with some. You are totally correct about the accessories. It is just for collectors, not for players. I might agree with the advise to just get the original game to play it, test it, see if you like it. This is not a game for everyone. I'm not sure if you would miss something, if you add interesting addons after playing most of the curses, because not all of them are just additional curses but just enrich the game by things like the egg you mentioned. I do not agree with the statement this game for a librarian before computers were invented. You do not use half of you time searching and sorting cards. This maybe annoying anyway, but there are many games out there you need to invest a comparable amount of time in preparing it. Well, if you totally detest this, this is no game for you. Oh, you might reduce the annoyance of it by saving and reloading more often. You will have a different impression of it, when you don't play everything in one big go within two days. You have stopping points every time you get to a new region. Especially when you do that vg curse, you have at least two to three story cuts. I never played more than one part / reaching the next or at most the second region / about 2 to 3 hours, and got back several days later. Little sorting (postparation), enough fun for one evening. Therefore I never encountered that impression in any way you did. What I encountered was a problem you run into if you miss or misinterpret clues. I have been running around in wrong places for a long time. That was annoying. Warning: This can and will happen. And the replenishing by saving mechanism mentioned just does not work forever. Things get banned and not reshuffled. What I really liked was this lose an try again part of the game. I liked the exploring, I liked the possibility to take the best from known parts of the continent to be better prepared for what's coming next. So in conclusion, you either like this game, like the little stories it tells, like how your knowledge increases by every try, or you don't like it, because this is not good enough for you to counter the problems this game does have. I would follow the advise to get the main game to try it out first. This game is really not that bad and still deserves it's place in the top lists.

@@RoomandBoardReviews Oh, I still have more of the 7th continent to explore, but I am looking forward to play the 7th citadel, too. I think, the changes they made, no shared deck, less hunting for food - even restoring your cards will play still a role somehow - and other little thing like finding items instead of crafting them, will make it a better game. And I really like this legacy aspect. Many of these aspects may counter the things you mentioned in your review. I'm looking forward to see your review of that game when it's time. I think there’s a misconception around how hunting works here. Whenever you hunt, there’s a “green to yellow” symbol at the bottom of the card. That “g to y” symbol means that you are supposed to banish, not discard, that card. So the amount of times you can hunt or fish at one location is limited, usually 2-3 times.

For you folks in the US North and South America are two different continents, which is why you count Antarctica as the 7th. However, for most of the world (in particular France, which is where the designers come from), the Americas are just one huge continent, so Antartica is the 6th. Observe that in the logo of the Olympics there are five rings and not six (symbolizing the "5" continents that take part in it).

16 hours and counting... looking at another 4-8 trawling back for things we, there are 3 of us, apparently missed. Maybe if we get them and get back without dying we'll finish before 25. There are some things I like about it, but it doesn't justify such a long play length. I just want it to end... I'll stupid/stubborn enough to keep on until we die or win, especially as the other two appear to be enjoying it, but after that I'm never touching the thing again. Hunting was exciting at first cos we could keep going... now I am secretly overcome with despair every time we find a food source and can eek a bit more 'life' out of our misrable romp. Not for me.. if anyone out there enjoys it, more power to you! Just dont ask me to play.

This sounds EXACTLY like my experience with it. I'm sorry for your inevitable back tracking. I eventually just started cheating to go through the motions so I could see the end and feel that sense of completion and unfortunately it really wasn't worth it :( I'd just "spoil" the ending for yourself and use those 4-8 hours to play a better game

Another 6/7 hours played and we were killed in a last ditch attempt to get food by fighting an angry bear with.... an oar. 22 hours played, roughly 4 of them were fun. Not for me. Really not for me.

Noooooooooo I got the playmat and the journal lol. I thought the journal was for saving your game and the playmat was...because I like playmats

Oh noo haha. But hey you might like it more than me! I've never really gotten in to playmats, and I was playing it all day, so the playmat might provide you with a stopping point - when you run out of room, time to call the session to a close! For the journal, I found I ditched it mainly because the experience points were annoying, but I'd say try and give yourself space for other sections and it might work better, don't be afraid to put some stuff in the back, in the middle etc. I think that would work a lot better than how I did it.

@@RoomandBoardReviews yeah the idea of it intrigues me and I've watched a 3 hour playthrough of part of a curse which got me to buy it from their website. It's a rainy day solo experience from what I can tell but might play it with the Mrs as a 2 player. I don't think it works well as a group game. I like playmats, but I hate storing them and don't get them anymore. This one was particularly poor because they folded it unfortunately. But it's still a nice surface to play on I suppose

@@nipzie They must ship them that way, it's inexplicable why they'd do that. I got mine second hand but he hadn't played any of it, and mine was folded as well. Could never get that indentation out.

Kind of idiotic to get butthurt you dont see expansion content when not playing an expansion curse.

I don't believe I said that anywhere. Actually the expansion content was my favourite part, with the Creature Companion addition.

Well, first of all there is no real "butthurt" there, RaB just said that base game is more then enough if you start the game. And second - you actualy enocounter expension content even if you play VG, you would get weather, roots, monsters (forgot how they are called there), pets and Path cards if you play with them. And even WGUMGD content, if I remember correctly - you could fix airship after you arrived on a main continent landmass. Do you need to do it? Well, not at all. But you could find it and try to fix it.
