I was painting a rental property for a gentleman a coupla years ago. He told me I was more than welcome to have anything that was left behind by former tenants. Wasn't much left behind that had any value, EXCEPT something that was forgotten or overlooked, tucked away in the corner of the basement. Yuuuuup!! A 1969 all original, numbers matching, Gibson SG Special 🤯🤪 Plugged it in as soon as I got home and to my surprise, it sounded perfect 🤪(once the 3 strings that where on it where tuned😁) It ofcourse has become my favorite to play, and one of my most prized possessions.

I love my 2017 SG standard w/ 57 classics. Such a great guitar. I actually grew up not being interested in SGs at all, I thought the look was just trying to hard. I went to guitar center once to try a Telecaster Deluxe, I had only played fender strat style guitars for the first 11 years of playing and never really had much experience with humbuckers. The salesmen was a huge ass and told me I couldn’t play the Tele, he didn’t want to take it down. I had to tell him I planned on buying but had to test it first. I hated that tele and grabbed an SG just to spite him as it was the only expensive guitar I could grab with out him getting it for me. Immediately when I heard the humbuckers I was knew that was the sound I’d always wanted to get.... then my life went all down hill and I started spending all my time pursuing guitar, learning about gear, quit all my other hobbies and distanced myself from all my friends lol. Weird to think it took 11 years of playing guitar for me to get GAS but back when I was younger my Dad instilled in me that spending money on gear was for pro’s and the rest of us should just practice. I still kinda agree with him which is why don’t have tons of gear compared to a lot of people as into it as I am. But getting gear and having different options to play on is more inspiring and fun, and anything that keeps me playing guitar is good haha.

Ted McCarty was my mom’s next door neighbor in Maui and in 1998 I got a chance to hang out with him at the pool. What a gracious and knowledgeable man. I actually asked him directly what SG stood for and, like you said, it stood for solid guitar. Another thing he mentioned regarding LesPaul was the fact that Les was going through a divorce back during that time and he wanted to minimize the sales of his named guitars until his divorce was final. Hence the expiration of his contract during that time. Lastly Ted is the one who turned me onto PRS guitars as he was very involved with them during the last years of his life. Of course, I went right out and bought a couple.

My first guitar was a Mexican model Tele when I was 12. After a year of playing I wanted an SG more than anything in the world because of Angus Young from Live At Donnington. So, I came across an Epiphone G-400 in heritage cherry and could afford it from my kid years. It wasn't bad, it was close but it wasn't the right thing. So about another year after that, I got lucky enough to catch my uncle who had just bought a Gibson SG Standard Heritage Cherry and didn't like it after a month, he sold it to me for about $100 cheaper than he paid for it cause he felt bad and it became my pride and joy! My dad however, went on to own 4 different models, diminishing my struggle to get one lol

For those commenting on Epiphone as if they are the lesser guitar, A good few years ago i had an Epi SG made in Korea, stupidly i sold it to help fund the real deal, ive bought and sold 4 SG's since then mainly because they were not as good as the Epi i sold... i made a big mistake selling that guitar, even now, many many years later i still wish i had it.... so what does that tell you.

Watching frank zappa jam freeform on his sg was always an experience never to be forgotten. He was a true maestro. But the one superstar that made his sg scream everytime live in concert and was one of the fastest loudest jammin artists of the gibson sg is Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult. Definitely one of the most talented SG players in history. Eric Bloom on the SG and Buck Dharma on his Les paul playing together could shake an entire stadium!

As a novice guitar player of a year and a half I'm not going to pretend I know and tried every guitar type out there, but out of the Les Paul, Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jazzmaster and ES-335, the SG (61 model) is my absolute favourite. The ergonomics are just perfect and it sounds great. My favourite SG player is Frank Zappa.

I like the SGs but then I played one and was sadly underwhelmed. It sounded great but was neck heavy, felt like the guitar neck was too far to the left because the body contour was a bit offset and it made me not want to play it at all. I guess most folks disagree since it outsells the Les Paul which I prefer both in looks and playability. 🤷🏻♂️

I have a 2004 SG Special in black and a 2005 SG Supreme in what i believe is called "midnight burst" or to normal people its blue, bought them both brand new and I love them to death! My Special was the 2nd guitar I ever got and the blue one represents months of hard work when I was a teenager. I'd love a red one of some description to add to my collection some day. For me Iommi was my SG hero (to be fair Toni Iommi and Eddie Van Halen were always my guitar idols) I never really listen to ACDC much until I was a lot older and my personal opinion is still such.... Sabbath>ACDC but both bands are brilliant in there own right...

In the early/mid 70’s I went into Watkins Music on Jefferson. Close to my childhood home in Dallas TX. Both gone now. I wanted a Les Paul. But the quality of American guitars in the 70’s was getting worse by the minute it seemed. They were very expensive and stupid heavy. Even though I was 15 I was playing in clubs. I looked at the lighter SG’s but they looked like the carpenters that built fences made them. In the 70’s Japan was taking advantage of the fact US guitars etc was getting worse. They used this to gain a stronger foot hold in the American market. I picked up an Aria (befor they changed the name to Aria Pro II in 1975) model 1932A. A beautiful blonde natural finish. The details were spot on. It played amazing and the neck was incredibly fast. And it sounded like the God of Rock guitars. That one was stolen in the 90’s but I replaced it last year and built in 1972 it’s still my #1 @ 48 years old. I wouldn’t take anything for it.

One likely reason that Les Paul did not like the SG was its shape. The original single-cut LP looks like a miniature archtop acoustic guitar (minus the F-holes+. The SG does not. Compared to the more conservative-looking single-cut LP, the SG looks like something new, untraditional, and ultra-modern (in 1961, anyway). Les apparently did not appreciate the SG’s modern, un-traditional look. I find this somewhat surprising as he was a forward-thinking innovator both musically and technically, the inventor of many things such as the first solid-body guitar (“The Log”), multitrack recording, (“Sound on Sound”), overdubbing, tape delay, phasing, etc. After all, the SG’s electronics and pickups are virtually identical to a humbucker single-cut LP (the SG’s neck pickup is slightly closer to the bridge making it a bit tighter and snappier sounding - an improvement to me). The necks are identical. As a plus, the SG offers superior, unlimited access to the upper frets when compared to the single-cut LP. The SG is a lot lighter than the original LP, and many prefer the SG’s pickup switch at the bottom where the knobs are (as on an ES-335, 345 and 355). That Les bristled at the SG does not readily comport with his innovative personality. Perhaps he felt disrespected because he was not invited to be on the design team and was not even consulted when the SG was being conceived. I sense more of a personal political rub here than anything musical. The SG is a fabulous and beautiful guitar that even Les might have grudgingly (if silently) acknowledged.

"the more wood the more resonance" this is physically impossible. The more material, the more the vibrations are nullified because they have to pass through more material. Do you think sticking strings on a fishing boat would make it a more resonant instrument than a guitar?
