I had all these talks on our year anniversary. I have been given so much crap from others because I just pulled my boyfriend aside and said where do you see us and what is your budget goals. He wanted to get married 4 years from there and I wanted to get married sooner because of my religious beliefs. We figured it out. We also talked about the wedding and he wanted to elope and I wanted to have a small wedding that costed less than 2k. I never got any prom, graduation, or parties so I wanted something for me. We put money aside together and this helped. We also decided on counseling before marriage for 2 years. I highly recommend this. Before you get married get counseling!

Married for 18 years, we keep 98% of our finances separate and we pay for home expenses based on approximate percentages of income. Our debt we brought into the marriage was our own responsibility (as it has been paid off through the years now)and new debt is handled similarly too. This saves us many disagreements. We keep eachother in the loop of general account balances to avoid surprises but purchase things within our means so it is rarely discussed.

My partner and I decided on a justice of the peace wedding with a fun dinner with my closest relatives. Wedding gifts were cash for our honeymoon. We’ve been together for 23 years and keep separate accounts for banking with he and I paying for bills separately. I think our biggest strength is our communication skills. Honesty and upfront ness before any purchases above 100 dollars. Works for us. Good luck all and be safe.

As a certified employee benefits specialist, I would recommend checking if your employer offers basic life insurance. Often times employers will offer 1x salary worth of coverage for free while also offering discounted voluntary life insurance should you need more coverage. The Bestow rates are outrageously expensive compared to what you can get through an employer plan.

Talking about money with your partner can tell you very quickly what his/her attitude towards your current relationship is. If he/she tries to evade the discussion or doesn‘t want to be honest about his/her financial situation - forget about him/her.
@Snowshowslow3 жыл бұрын
I think that's moving a bit too fast. Money is a big taboo in a lot of households and cultures and you don't know what financial trauma someone might have gone through on a personal level either. I would not take any big steps in a relationship without discussing money, but don't immediately start running for the hills if someone isn't happy to discuss money on the first try either. Give them some time, explain to them why it's important to you and ask when they will be able to share. If someone keeps refusing long-term that is not hopeful for the relationship, of course. But give them a fair chance first.

My mom wanted a big fancy wedding and my father who hates being the center of atention wanted a small informal ceremony. Because of this they didnt end up getting married until I was 16. Which was 20 years and 6 children after the engagement.. They ended up getting married one summer while we were all in Italy on holiday. The wedding took place in a small village in the mountains which my mom adored, and it was only the two of them and all their children which my dad loved.. Plus wedding and honeymone in one. The topic of kids is a relationship dealbreaker for me so I'm not even letting them go beyond one date if I hear "Yes, I want kids" or "I don't know if I want kids." I'm getting a tubal ligation to ensure I don't have any, lol. However, the house conversation is an interesting and difficult one. I don't like being permenantly stuck in one location, because the landscape can change a lot and maybe I won't be happy there years later. Now, instead of just packing and moving, we'd have to sell the house. Then there's the costs of making the house presentable to sell it, getting a real estate agent, saying screw it to all the hard work we've already put into the home...it would be exhausting. And any time something breaks, we're paying for it. Except for old age, I'm just not entirely in love with the idea of owning a home because it is a massive purchase. So, home owmership would be my biggest "I don't know, I'm not sure" question and I'm worried I'll end up being pulled along to what my partner wants if they don't feel the same way. Or, this too might be breakup territory. Or, who knows, maybe they can convince me and we can find a landscape that looks like it'll be a good environment for the next 40 years, lol. I just know I'm not crazy about doing the whole song and dance of home ownership multiple times because if I own the home, I want to go ahead and go all-in with making it look as I want, which means lots of money. In short, I think if finance wasn't an issue, sure, no prob, let's buy a house. But I know my income, while significantly better than it's ever been, isn't the kind of income you buy a house with and I'm going to go ahead and call it that my future partner's likely isn't, either. So, we'll see...

@@411blah411 Even with renting out property, that's too much work to me, lol! I think of my current apartment, for example. The kitchen sink had various issues with leaks (both underneath and around the faucet), the AC venting needs to be redone because the upstairs doesn't get any air (we were given window units now), the fridge died a few months ago and had to be replaced. Half the plugs in the kitchen also don't work. Oh! As well with the AC, the furnace or whatever under the stairs gets a mean leak of water and we have to keep a large plastic tub underneath the device so it doesn't leak all over the floor, then haul it twice a day to pour down the downstairs toilet. The water heater in the shed outside burst about a year into living here and that too had to be replaced. All of these things happened within a four year timespan and would've come out of my pocket had I owned the place. And then there are the things a tenant might break or damage if I were renting a home out. It could also be smooth sailing though, especially with a place that isn't older than the hills, like this apartment (I'm eagerly working on moving here in 2021, lol!). But I don't think I want to be a landlord. I might invest in other people's real estate companies, if possible, though.

I have no desire to have kids and don't see the need to be married. We've been together 11 years next week and just starting living together this past year. Were on the same page with everything and we split everything 50/50. No need to comingle finances when we are both financially independent. We also don't tell each other how to spend our money as long as our bills get paid.

There might be an argument to get some things on paper nonetheless, I may disagree with Dave Ramsey a lot, but when he says that house you bought together, if one of you dies, that house is yours and their mum. It does not have to be a marriage, even if that is the standard solution, but some contract might be a good idea.

I definitely do not want kids. Nothing against children. Just not for me. And before they swipe on my profile, my guys can see that preference pretty clearly. And I can tell if a guy really wants kids, really doesn't, or is flexible. I'm just not gonna message a guy who seems like an otherwise great match but definitely wants kids. Like, why bother?

I like that we know this about each other, because it means we just aren't shy about these conversations. Entirely separate finances and deliriously happy as well. Seems the most secure solution, security equals happiness. However it helps if you both make around the same amount and both feel good about how expenses are split

With regards to point number 3: I have been with my partner for 9 years now, married for almost 5 years. Before getting married, having kids was a no brainer for me (I naively assumed that that's how life is supposed to go and it was easier having been around family at that time) but now, 29yrs, in a different country, and in debt, kids is waaaay down in my agenda! My husband however LOVES kids, and he can't wait to be a father, but he respects my decision nonetheless... I believe that one truly has to think about themselves first, so that you may truly and unselfishly be a provider in all aspects (physically, emotionally, financially) to a helpless being (child). These topics are great, and continued communication and transparency are key for a healthy relationship!

I find, in the personal finance realm, there is a strong opinion held by many that couples who have seperate finances are 'doing it wrong.' Having separate finances is almost a doomsday prediction for relationships amongst the majority. That said, I do wonder if couples who pool finances aren't just repeating 'of course we're happy!' because that's what's supposed to happen. That said, the difference between 6.10 and 5.46 isn't that big and so not compelling enough for me to change my mind. Great video and list of discussions to have!

I want an elopement with just immediate family for reasons that have nothing to do with marriage and everything to do with platonic friendships and that leftover trauma from high school that we all have. It is painful to be left out from a guest list. I've seen many friends my age get married and invite my parents but not me because our parents are friends and the parents decide their guest list. Can anyone else relate?

I would have married my wife again but we should have waited an extra 8 months before getting married. If we had, the wedding and first year of marriage would have gone a lot smoother. For example we hadn't learned to consult so the wedding was way too expensive and wasn't what either of us wanted. Her family was helping and we didn't tell them what we really wanted. My wife even grabbed the microphone during wedding and said the wedding reception was a flop and we should have gone to a cheap community hall

Financial advice eventually becomes life and relationship advice. Study hard, work hard, pick your college and major wisely, build relationships based on shared values and beliefs. Call them "bougie" or "conservative," but they work waaay better than the alternatives. And no, you don't need religion or tradition to justify them when you have actual reasons backed by evidence like the ones in this video.

I am constantly perplexed by so many of her topics. I was taught all of this by my parents and did all of this. Is it the generational divide ( she is significantly younger than me), or just tons of crappy parents or is common sense just profoundly lacking in our culture?

I think those happiness levels between couples who share bank accounts etc might not consider income levels? Someone on higher incomes will be much happier sharing an account than a couple on minimum wage
@giuliazumba1583 жыл бұрын
I dont think that a 6.1 score in happiness is a good score for a relationship in general.... furthermore, we didn't get any confidence intervals and p values here. maybe the intervals overlap a lot? is the difference significant? Did they factor in age, duration of the relationship, kids, traditional roles vs modern relationship? Usually, older boomer couples have joint accounts but only the man is working, while the woman is mom and houswife. In younger generations, that's not possible most of the times because we get shitty paid jobs and insecure positions. Very weakly presented from a statistical POV.
