So I found this video maybe a year ago. And found myself watching again because I now own a horse and he is a rescue and has just put on enough weight for me to start streaches and exercising to build muscle and this really helped. I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing, I'm researching as I go but seems to be working :D

i tried (very gently though) the leg stretch on my 11 year old who always takes half an hour to warm um before the actual work. i did this while grooming him before riding... i already saw the difference in the way he just stood there, it looked more relaxed. he also was better than usual in training. he loves the "carrot stretch" very much as well, and not just because of the carrot...
@slickndry8 жыл бұрын
when you stretch the front legs forward, do not lift them up. try to keep the foot low. lifting it up can cause them to tear some muscle fibers in their pectorals. and the carrot stretches when the horse bends left and right, don't go to the hip. they twist their necks when they go that far defeating the point of the stretch it should be done to the point of the shoulder with some gentle pushing on the neck. I am studying equine therapies. I didn't know this until recently.
@meredithmorris4938 жыл бұрын
+slickndry I was always told to stretch down, so if you were going past the shoulder you would make them move their head towards their belly. Not aware if that causes any difference to the twist on the neck?
@slickndry8 жыл бұрын
+Meredith Morris then a horse reaches around to their hip or belly, they neck twists. less so near the belly. the best alternative if you don't want to do to the shoulder is out away from the horse. hold them still and ask them to stretch in like a 90° angle from their shoulders. and extend their nose out
@meredithmorris4938 жыл бұрын
Okay thanks :) just starting stretches soon with my boy as we are picking up the pace a bit. Or well trying to make him pick up the pace a bit haha. Thought it would be best to make sure I did stretches as from what his previous owner told us he's been in a field for 3 years.
@slickndry8 жыл бұрын
+Meredith Morris good stretching is great. especially if you get a massage done on the horse and maintain it with stretches. people who do their "homework" make my job easier and the horse happier
@meganproffitt4248 жыл бұрын
+slickndry When you stretch the legs I learned yesterday at a equine massage demo to move the front leg in little circles starting a little high then slowly circling down. (I'm not good at explaining) Is that what you mean? I ride a mare and I'm looking into ways I can loosen her muscles up with stretches before I ride. Thanks for any tips. :)

Glad to see that people are using stretching techniques for their horses. Using "pressure points" on the belly to get the horse to lift their topline as well as using the "pressure points" near the tail to get them to roll their hips is EXCELLENT! I do have concern as to the way you are showing/performing the leg stretches. When you put your body IN FRONT of the horse, you are a setting yourself and your horse up for injury. If your horse spooks (no matter how well you know a horse, they ALL CAN & WILL spook at some point), where do you think they are going to go with you holding their leg in front of them? They are going to leap/run right over the top of you! OUCH! Please use proper body positioning - TO THE SIDE! Use proper body mechanics and use your body as an extension of the horse and extend their leg forward... if you are standing to the side of the horse, if something spooks them... you are MUCH less like to get run over. Same goes for the back legs... if you are standing behind them in the DANGER zone, its GONNA happen! Again, stand to the SIDE of the horse just as you do for grooming, saddling etc. Use your body as an extension of the horse's body and move with them... please dont stand in front of or behind your horse and pull on their legs! Its not going to give you an effect stretch and is just an accident waiting for a place to happen. Bell well, be safe and love your horse as it loves you!

I've done it by running my nails gently down either side of their spine to get them to lower their backs, and then itching around or right behind the girth area to make them lift up through their backs. Usually works and is a bit gentler than the hoof pick method if your horse is sensitive, like mine :)

Like it! I try to do more stretching with my horse! Only she hates the belly/ but stretches. Literally ears flat and sometimes even a little kick 😳 so if you have any tips?
@phoebebaisch42928 жыл бұрын
Try massaging your hand around her belly/rear, get her used to having you touch her there, and continue to put more pressure there, until eventually you can do the stretch. For the first belly stretch, start slowly inching your hand from his back to his belly. This could take a few minutes to have him/her used to it, an hour or so, or several days.

Love you guys! My old paint mare used to do a lot of these stretches herself, first time she did it when I was watching I was like "WTF?!". You should do a video on horses who get nervous before a jump. My mare loves to jump but some where before I lost she lost her confidence and sometimes get nervous that last stride in.

when humans start their exercise, it is advisable to get the body warm and blood,oxygen etc flowing to the muscles before stretching. so in a warm up we do dynamic stretches and cooling down is the best time to do static stretches. does this apply to our horsies too? would it be better to do a nice long walk before a stretch and/or stretching after the ride?
@MadMareStudio7 жыл бұрын
Unlike humans, horses are almost always moving. Dynamic stretches are not needed, IMO. The stretches they show you here are the best ones to do pre-ride. Once you get on, there is a warm-up period before you start actual work. As for cooling down, there are stretches (down and out to release and relax the back and mind) and a walk to cool out (if hot) is one of them. Personally, hot or not, I always take my horses out for a 10-15 minute (or more) walk after every work session, regardless of how long we worked, or how much work we did.

I have concerns about stretching cold muscles and find stretching after a workout with many more stretches than shown here much more beneficial. There are actually4 great stretches per leg that are far more useful, but there are also some skeletal issues that need to be addressed with stretches so they are not done incorrectly.

If your going to do a hard work out then before and after. If it's light then after. However before you ride always do a quick neck stretch. How old is your horse you might need to change up his diet as well as stretching. Just listen to your horse he will tell you if it hurts.

another strech that my horse acupunter taught me when i did work experience with her was to life their tailup so its straight inline with his spin and pull it, your horse should strech his head foward. this helps straighten out his spine to his poll. It is very important though that his tail is straight with his spine cause you can pull it the wrong way. I suggest beginners dont try this by yourself
@videogamergirl2210 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this video! ! The first stretch I always do before getting on cause im always paranoid it'll be pinching my horse. Also, I have a gelding, 14.2 hands, I dont really know how to describe his coloring, he has a black forlock and a white mane and tail. Hes 9 years old, and he's a saint undersaddle ( I can get on him with absolutely nothing on him and he does everything I say) But we have a problem, He's very agressive. He'll bare his teeth and lung at you or turn around a kick at you. 2 weeks ago he attacked my best friend's mom and sent her to the hospital. She left without stitches but she has a pretty bad wound. He wasnt provoked or anything. All she did was go into his stall to get his water buckets. I don't understand his behavior. Only cause I do anything to him and he doesnt react, but when another person comes close to him, he becomes very aggressive. Any advice?
@thebreyergal10110 жыл бұрын
Hey I saw your comment and was wondering if your gelding still does this. If he does, does he only act this way towards other people in his stall, or outside of his stall as well? If it is only in the stall then he is most likely territorial of his stall. This can happen if you let them get away with "guarding" their stall. I've seen many horses that are ornery and pin their ears when you walk by their stall but few actually attack. This might be the case but I'm not sure. Hope I helped a little (:
@videogamergirl2210 жыл бұрын
Sabrina R It doesn't matter where he is. He always lunges or tries to kick everyone He has gotten better with the more work he's doing. But he might get more aggressive again because this morning my pregnant mare gave birth. So a lot of my attention will now be on the foal.
