I am 58 and was under the impression my entire life that I could not draw/paint, totally unartistic. Lock-down gave me a reason to HAVE A GO. I did the eye tutorial and was blown away with what I created. Thanks for such detailed instructions and list of supplies. I have been to art shops that I never knew existed under my very nose.

I would also recommend a tombow mono eraser for tiny detail you wanna erase, Which I personally think works better than a beaded eraser (due to the fact that it up lightens up your sketch, not erase it)

I use several woodcase pencils, but I also use mechanical pencils. They're very handy, never need sharpening, and you can get soft lead for them just as you can for woo0dcase pencils. Some even draw with no lead extended, and this pretty much eliminates breakage, even with the softest lead, or with 0.3 lead which is great for very fine detail, or for fine crosshatching. I think many beginners don't realize you can buy several grades of lead for mechanical pencils, or that they can be used for art. I know pro artists who almost never use anything else. I use ones that keep writing until the lead runs out, such as the Uniball 207, and a couple of others that don't need lead extended in order to draw, though you can extend the lead if needed. But I also use drafting pencils. I love the extended pipe because it helps me see exactly what I'm doing. My favorite is a very cheap one. It's the Pentel 200 series. One wonderful artist called these the light sabers of the mechanical pencil world, and I think he's right. They're wonderful. I use a slip on grip with mine because I don't like thin plastic grips, but I also often use a slip on grip with woodcase pencils, though far more often with mechanical pencils. Whiler not a must, one tool I found handy when I first started drawing was a grrrrrrraphite stick. I still use the, The ones I use most are rectangular and half an inch wide on the sides. I can cover a very large area by lying one flat on the paper, but I can also wear each corner down to different degrees of flatness and get as many as eight different lines, along with a point that's very sharp. I found this extremely useful for quick sketches. I have several grades of graphite from HB to 8B, and doing very quick sketches is eawsier for me than using a pencil of any kind.

I started drawing this week. I'm 65 and have never attempted anything beyond a stick figure. So I know very little. I don't know if I accidentally discovered something, but going through my garage today, I found some Dry Graphite spray on lubricant that sprays like WD40 but dries instantly. I sprayed some on a sheet of my drawing paper, and low and behold I was able to blend the whole sheet of paper. It's fast and works great. All from a spray can. Did I discover a new use or is this a thing to do already? Can of Dry Graphite lubricant spray is about 5 dollars.

If you are a bargainer and you want to be a acrylic painter then you should get primary colors and also black and white. Red blue makes purple, blue yellow makes green, red yellow makes orange, black white makes grey, red white makes pink, blue white makes light blue, yellow white makes light golden, black blue makes deep blue , yellow black makes dark green, black red makes maroon and red yellow blue makes brown. these are the colors that you will get by mixing them

If you are a complete beginner go to the dollar store and buy a pad of paper for about S2 to $3, don't waste paper, and some pencils, you can get a beginner drawing book from the library. Actually most books that say beginners really aren't for beginners, if need be, try a decent drawing book for kids. You will be making a lot of mistakes and with an inexpensive pad of paper you wont feel bad and you can pick up a new pad for next to nothing. Improve the quality of your supplies as you improve. Only start spending money on art supplies, which are expensive, if you continue to draw and expand your quality of work.

I'm sure this is a dumb question...but I'm jut another old lady teach herself to draw and paint for the first time over these past several years😳...im curious about your kneadable eraser....is it just that black due to use? I saw another video and his was super dark as well and he reminded people that they last forever, that you just knead it up and it works its through....I find them fascinating when I got one several years ago when starting out...though due to health issues I can't draw enough to get mine lovely and dark, but I'm trying :) Just wondered if he was correct or if you had different thoughts on that. Also, if prismacolor(i know I've spelled it all wrong, sorry) was still your favorite? Its what I bought at first and it was very hard.....then bought a Faber-Castell and its crazy soft...I apparently need one in the middle :) but the harder one is definitely better for holding a sharp point or edge for detail, but the soft is better, for me anyway, for my hands and for smoothly getting a large area lightened up. So, just curious what you or others thought :) I'm in the process of working through your eye tutorial and rewatched the eyelashes video as well because I've worked hard and used up my small bit of energy on that eye, still nothing great, but I'm afraid of ruining it fully with odd eyelashes...but...once I can get a bit of energy ill definitely have a go at it!! Thanks so much for all you do and how well you teach!! Art has saved my life in many ways and great teachers like you have had a hand in that and I appreciate it more then these words can say :) truly!

I got a shading kit that had a kneaded eraser, but it didn't mold into shapes, also it was blue and not stretchy at all, is this the right description of a kneaded eraser or did I get scammed😑?
@jeffshearer51254 жыл бұрын
You got a cheap one
@RapidFireArt4 жыл бұрын
A kneaded eraser takes time to become moldable like the one I was using. The more you erase with it, the softer and more pliable it becomes. To speed up this process, scribble on a sheet of paper to create graphite dust and then let your eraser eat that up. Knead the eraser and mix the graphite in very well. You may notice the eraser become instantly softer. Hope that works for you! Cheers!

I'm not telling you you're doing something wrong, because everyone has their style of art and how they do it. but my art teacher taught us to always: 1. Keep our pencils sharp when doing everything. 2. Don't move your fingers when drawing because believe it or not it gives you more control, with smoother lines. same with your wrist.
