very cool video, I recently did similar upgrades to a buffalo terrastation nas that had the original motherboard die. the backplane on it was unfortunately not able to be used with the new board because it used some odd proprietary connector to handle spinning the drives up. I pulled it out and just wired them individually since they're sata drives anyways. It's currently my cold backup for my main nas, and I need to get around to setting up wake on lan to allow the main one to back itself up automatically. One thing you might look at here is weather that foam is blocking the new psu from getting air because it seemed like it was a little close to the fan
@Ottetal
@Ottetal 25 күн бұрын
That sounds nice! Could you have harvested the connector from the old motherboard and build a new cable? There is a ~2cm gap between the PSU intake fan and the foam, so it should be fine, thanks

Very cool to see this, and thanks for sharing, but... - Your DIY air baffles may affect the air flow on voltage regulator module parts on the mainboard. - I'd be highly interested in the temperatures of your 12 hard drives AFTER the Noctua swap. Do you use 7,200 rpm drives, or slower ones? - I could see some crumps of dried old thermal paste between your LGA fins, which gave me goose bumps: it is not only a high risk to contact problems, but even may damage those fragile fins.
@Ottetal
@Ottetal 24 күн бұрын
Hello friend, thank you for the kind words. I don't think the voltage regulators will take harm with less airflow, since the new CPU puts siginficantly less load on both MOSFETs and vreg. Good comment, I'll keep it in mind in a future video I am actually "only" using 8 hard drives - the four middle drives are all SSDs. That being said, the noctuas don't push enough air, and drive temps shot to mid 40s. It's still within spec, but I've also read the backblaze report. My next video (should be uploaded tomorrow) will go into what I consider the perfect fans for this box I agree on the thermalpaste. Rest assured, I took it out off camera, but only I know that - and observant viewers like yourself will rightfully cringe. Have a good day :)

@Ottetal
@Ottetal 24 күн бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. The server used to have 2x10G with SFP+ ports, but I don't need the speed. I have dual gigabit to my Compute nodes and a single gigabit link for management and use with my main system. I think I'll go three gigabit links to compute nodes in the future. Same with the CPU, I don't need the extra performance right now, and would rather have the lower powerdraw. I am keeping a keen eye on usage though - if it goes up, I'll swap back

I wonder if the sound dampening foam makes an impact on the thermals... I mean I could, but then again it ain't touching anything!
@Ottetal
@Ottetal 23 күн бұрын
It's not touching, and not obstructing airflow, so it's not affecting thermals. If anything, having a slightly narrower internal dimension for air to go through should direct air even more over the active components. This is probably such a small degree, that it's not measurable within the variance I can measure

hello! i never understood what a NAS are used for how can they be helpful and how small can they get! (sorry for the stupid qustion)
@Ottetal
@Ottetal 17 күн бұрын
@@switcE no worries mate. A NAS (Network attached Storage) is like putting a hard disk on your local network and giving it an IP address. By doing so, you make the file on the NAS accessible by all of the computers on your network. This is smart for several applications, for instance: 1: Because the NAS is powered on at all times, you can power off your primary computer, and still access files. 2: Since the NAS only serves files, it can be very low power 3: As said before, multiple machines can access the same files, without needing to move memory sticks 4: Since they are connected to the network, they can be put in the basement where their noise and heat output does not matter. The size of the NAS can be as small as a pack of gum, and theoretically as large as a fridge

@@KarlMeyer It would seem as though they have restocked since. Here is the link friend: www.moddiy.com/products/modDIY-Sound-Dampening-Foam-Material-%288mm%29.html The foam making thermals worse to me, makes no sence either. Someone said on a forum that because heat could not radiate to the metal and then out of the chassis, I would overheat in an instance, which *maybe* could have some merit, if it was not for the four giant fans negating all heat to case trasnfer.

Downgrading well kinda not the solution. An 2.3ghz will just run non stop at that speed an 3.0hz will run 2.0-3.0 I'm giving examples and the 2.3ghz will go 100% non stop while 3.0ghz will go 20-80% which is kinda questionable downgrading you're actually making it worse. The solution would've been arctic freezer 3 aio with the noctua fans not those but yeah, remake the interior so that aio can actually fit. Put small noctua fans where the cpu and motherboard is like 3 is ok, psu fan doesn't matter if the fan it's up or down just it doesn't have holes so kinda useless so make holes. Better than that you won't get. But downgrading an cpu only because of sound like big uhhhhh 💀.
