I've had a community fish tank in my bedroom for like the last 5 years now and i have tried all sorts of easy to grow beginner plants but none of them lasted more than a couple of weeks to a Month before dying on me. I don't know if it's because my fish are destructive scumbags or because i am not feeding them properly or a mixture of both but i have yet to sucessfully keep a plant alive in my tank. Usually when the plant first arrives in the mail i open the bag it's in and rinse it off in the sink and then just stick the roots as deep into the gravel as i can so it doeesn't float away and sometimes i will anchor it down with an ornament but the next day when i get out of bed the plant will be floating on the surface or stuck to the intake tube of filter. The last plant i had all the leaves managed to become stripped off the plant one by one till it was nothing more than a green stick lol. After that i just gave up on plants and stuck with the fake plastic plants. 🐠🥬🐟 I think the 2 foot long bottom feeders i have are the main culprits of the mass destruction that occurs in my tank. When they start moving around in the tank they're so big it causes a mini typhoon and it's next to impossible to keep the tank nice and clean cause there is strings of poop hanging out of their butts 24/7/365 so even after i just finish vaccuming an hour later there's strings of poop draped along the surface like curtains and on the bottom scattered around as well. When i first got the bottom feeders they were small and i had no idea they'd eventually grow to be over a foot long. I really didn't even expect them to live this long. They're huge beasts now. They are capable of resting their tailfins on the bottom floor and poking their faces out the top of the water surface. As a matter of fact when it is feeding time that is exactly what they do. They just stand from bottom to top and with their face sticking out the top of the water they hold their mouths open for me so i can just drop the food directly into their mouths lol. It's a funny sight to see.

The only plant I have ever tried in the past was Java Fern. and knowing ZERO about how to run a planted tank it did surprisingly well. And what's even stranger is that it did so with a juvenile Oscar in the tank! So Java Fern is a strong recommendation from me as well. When I stand up my next tank here in a few weeks hopefully it's on my list of plants. And they're available everywhere.

The biggest problem in growing aquarium plants that we face in Asian countries is water temperature. About 6 months in a year our water temperature would reach 30 C (86 F), most plants don't survive that. Could you do a video on some plants that can be kept at higher water temperatures ?

I have 15g fluval flex with no live plants. In anticipation of some new fish coming, i want to get my amonia from 0.25 to zero. My tap water has amonia. So..i have amazon frogbit, salv min and giant duckweed coming. My questions are a) which of these plants will do best with close light. The LEDS are under the hood. B) if they are all ok should i use them all or choose 1 or 2? C) whats the best fert? I have flourish and flourish advance and APT complete. Bought several just in case. Ive put plant rings on the far side of the tank, pointed the output nozzles down to reduce water surface flow and added an airstone on the far side of the tank as well. Any help will be appreciated. Plants are coming in 2 days. Im going to sterize them in 50/50 hydrogen peroxide and water for 10 minutes for snail eggs, parasites etc

I've had zero success with plants with a single exception. One plant in the corner seems to survive but hasn't grown at all. I consider that a success. I even tried anacharis which I always considered an aquarium weed and zero luck with it. I tried increasing light duration only to have black algae (Cyanobacteria) some call it bluegreen, mine was black and covered the substrate like a blanket. That took several months to get rid of. I don't think I'm brave enough to try planting my aquarium any more. You have to be some kind of pro to do that.

@FunWithHOScaleStuff
@FunWithHOScaleStuff 2 жыл бұрын
@@kenk8215 Hi Ken. Thanks for inquiring. I have a 10 gal. tank. I put a gravel base ~ 1" with sand on top ~ 1". I have ~ 10" of fish total. The water is hard, my region, pH is neutral. The tank gets indirect light all day and hood light set for 2 hours. More light and my tank fills with string and green algae and cyano gunk covers the bottom, so I'm dialed in on light to keep the cyano crap at bay :-) All plants I bought had a good rinse to remove fertilizer because my initial attempt was not rinsed and it caused an explosion of algae. Evidently it likes fertilizer as well.

Corey, I love you man, but please stop recommending root tabs for every single plant. I buy stuff from you because I love your stuff. But I also know what I'm doing. If one were to root tab as much as you recommend, they're likely to run into algae, cyanobacteria, poor water quality, and possibly other problems. Only root tab heavy root feeders, like swords, that would otherwise deplete a nutrient rich substrate. Most beginner friendly plants shouldn't require root tabs. P.S. I can't wait to get my hands on your new heaters. They look amazing! Everything I've gotten from you guys is top notch!

Hi Corrie I’m in the process of building a new fishroom and my speciality will be discus these tanks will be bare bottom with 50% water changes every day especially for the young fish and the same amount for the adults 3 times a week , my ph is 6.5 and the temperature will be 30 degrees and my water will be stored and put through a HMA lighting will not be bright 🤔 However I would like to have a show tank in my home the substrate to be sand and this will be thinly layered with some bog wood I’d like to grow some plants on my bog wood , and if I have a few small pebbles perhaps some moss that will attach to these ? At the rear of the tank a couple of plants to give some height that I can grow in pots and hide these behind the bog wood , there will be no C02 ! So please can you advice on discus friendly hardy plants , and will those I put into the pots need a special compost if so how do I do this !! and finally if I add a liquid plant food how often should I do this and will my ph of 6.8 remain the same as this is important to me ? I know you have a lot of experience in plants and wanted to ask your advice first before setting up the discus tank in my living room I am also a subscriber to your channel which I enjoy watching very much Paul from the Uk 🇬🇧

Couple questions.. where can i buy plants that aren't grown with fish or that are pretreated for diseases/parasites? Also what do you recommend for low light background, midground and foreground plants for a 55g? Also without needing co2. I have a basic LED light/hood that came with the aqueon kit. Ty

I have the best luck with crypts & anubius. But I've found crypts to be sensitive to water temps. I've forgotten to plug my heater back in after water change & my crypt melted (leaves die, roots live), but it came right back. 😁
