I've cut roofing sheet metal with a circular saw by flipping the blade to run backwards. It cuts really clean.

As an Industrial Expert, I know that Fiber Discs can explode and send the disc flying! We call it a Chop Saw but cut the metal slowly.

I saw a video where a dude was using one and the disc fragmented. Fortunately he was wearing a face shield AND safety goggles. A playing card-sized piece penetrated the face shield and the goggles. It stopped a few millimeters from his eyeball. Brown trouser time.

Happy Independence Day. Your welding video was terrific and so is this video. Thank you. I live in Japan and believe it or not, I buy flap disc sanders for my angle grinder at the dollar store. An old Japanese man taught me this trick. About 1/4 of the price of the big box store. Please do a budget plasma cutter video. Thank you.

I've been a pipefitter since 1981 and I've only had one fiber cutoff wheel to break while I was using it but I was thankful to have a full faces shield on. Don't consider using a wire wheel without a full face shield. I'm not a safety nut but that's my routine and if you're welding wear some type of gloves, sooner or later you will accidently pick up a hot piece. I'm currently making spatulas from new Lodge cast iron skillets. The first ones were cut using a fiber cutoff wheels which was extremely nasty. I bought an Evolution chop saw with a metal cutting blade which is much less nasty. I highly recommend those plus each cut is perfectly straight.

All good tips, Keith. Especially about safety glasses, and better yet the safety shield. If you're using a grinder or cutoff disc, both are not a bad idea. If you use the thin cut off disks can blow apart, and believe me, cheek skin don't stop any part of that disk, and it'll make you say a dirty word or two. The best tool you can use when cutting metal --a working brain !!! Most uhoh's when cutting metal, don't end well. And if you think a tool designed to cut or remove steel won't hurt skin, well you better pick another hobby. Keep up the great videos Keith. Happy 4th to ya'll. God bless you and your family, my friend, and ya'll stay safe.

Don’t use an angle grinder without a guard. I hung a cutting disc on a piece of steel and it exploded. It went through my Nomex shirt, my t-shirt and embedded itself three layers deep into my stomach. Bloody and painful is an understatement. That was the last time that I ever used an angle grinder without a guard. Don’t do what I did.

Right, we smart guys listen to the advice of others who did something wrong an we know what can happen to us if we do the same thing. But I think this new generation don't want to listen to us older ones and they will have to learn for themselves. Thanks for posting this buddy.

@@terrydouglas2777 You’re welcome Terry. I always tell my younger techs, “you don’t have to make the same mistakes that I have but you do have to put the time in the field. KZbin will only get you so far and it’s never as easy as it is shown.” Just like with my bee keeping hobby. “You’re gonna get stung. The question is how much before you suit up.” That hobby has a painful learning curve…😂

@@terrydouglas2777 I did all my learning before there was an Internet so I learned by having things hit me in the face and burn my fingers and such. Now, with the Internet people can learn from the mistakes of others without learning the hard way by getting hurt. The knowledge of the entire world is right in front of us letting us learn just about anything. What an amazing time we live in now.

I bought some aluminum welding wire, made an eye on one end of it and then took an egg weight and slid it down the wire from the other side toward the eye. Now you can do this with several different size egg weights and add more than one if needed to get the desired weight needed. So if you had a 3 oz. Egg weight and put 3 of them on the wire you would have a 9 oz. Bottom weight. Bend the wire and cut it close to the end of the third weight. Then when you get the weights snagged up on rocks ect.. you will pull the weights off the wire and keep the rest of your rig.. hook leader ect..

I was grinding on something with a cheap trigger lock grinder when the wheel broke and hit so hard it threw the grinder out of hands and hit me in the face.. I had to get stitches but I probably should have bought a lottery ticket because the only lasting damage is a small chip on one of two big center teeth in the corner. It got me in the cheek and cut just left of my mouth, i could fold a flap of skin over but the doc sewed me up and good and you'd never know now. Thankfully I was wearing adequate ppe and it barely nicked my hand through the leather gloves I was wearing and I was wearing a denime and wool coat (cause it was cold) cause it was locked running wide open it kept going after it hit me and it got into the coat and locked up, thankfully it was thick enough it locked it up saved my chest from further damage. Could of been a super bad deal but it was just a few hours in the er and 14 stitches.

The thin cutting disc for the grinders are great as long as you don't put any lateral pressure on them while cutting. They will explode hints the hole in your building. They also will put holes in your person.

Big thanks, very comprehensive. How about something similar on cutting, bending, welding plate aluminum at least 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick, maybe thicker. Weight adds up and a lot of hobbies like vehicles can benefit from tough but not too heavy bumpers, racks, skid plates etc. Maybe some tips on where to buy the plate at a fair price.

I will not use an angle grinder w an on off switch. I have to have the paddle style and nothing under 10 amps or it’s a goner in 4 to 6 months, no matter whom the manufacturer is. I use a 4.5” 13 amp Bosch paddle style angle grinder, w no guard but I keep that anti vibration handle on it. I also have 4 10 amp deWalt’s one w a cut off wheel, one w a wire wheel, one w a cupped wire wheel and the last one is mounted upside down (disk up) to a workbench w a foot pedal. Makes it a momentary grinder for small parts like key stock, or cold roll under 16/32”

@danimalscreationsandadvent8049
@danimalscreationsandadvent8049 10 ай бұрын
You should be able to just use a good quality drill bit on those butter knives. I don't believe they're heat treated since they don't really have a "cutting" edge. Drilling steel usually works better if you're running a lower rpm. Get a spray can of cutting oil, marvel mystery oil, or pretty much any kinda oil to lubricate and cool your bit. You could hit it with a torch and soften it, but I'm thinking you wanna keep them having a polished finish

Dropping another good tip on ya'll: The cut-off wheels work much better if you work your way through the cut by going back and forth across the cut. If you PLUNGE the disk into the cut, so that the cutting wheel is in-between the two halves, it lasts a fraction of the time!
@danimalscreationsandadvent8049
@danimalscreationsandadvent8049 10 ай бұрын
That's how I make most all my cuts with a cutoff wheel. Reduces heat by allowing the heat to be spread out across the length of the cut instead of localized in one spot as you cut. And like you said, it helps the cutoff wheel to last a bit longer. It's also helpful to me for making straighter cuts.
