Germany can afford to give their people the gift of health insurance because they don't have to maintain a standing army, which by peace treaty of WW2 they are not allowed to have. Should we let them have their military might again? They been living so well off our dime, they don't even want a big army. Should we reduce our military like Obama wanted and have billions to spend on health insurance? Very risky, and no easy answer in the offings.

As another German, I can say that the identity card is not actually compulsory. If you prefer, you can use a passport instead, which is the reason I never had an identity card in about half a century. When the red EU passports were new (and, IIRC, the Perso was first in the form of a card), there was a combination offer, get both for a reduced price. I scratched my head, then asked what situation there was where I couldn't just use the passport instead of the card. Turns out, there's pretty much no such situation (some private places might want more than the passport because your address isn't in there, but you can just show them, say, a letter addressed to you). So I only got the passport. As to Mett, it is indeed not without health risk. Make very sure that it is fresh and has been kept cool! And you can also get it in sausage form, essentially just Mett in a sausage casing. For a while, I had a daily Mettbrötchen during my time in the air force (around 1980), but not before or since, I think.

@Dornavver
@Dornavver 5 жыл бұрын
@@Kellydoesherthing Actually, there are several loopholes in our (German) laws. For example: if you drive on the Autobahn, you are generally not allowed to pass another car on it's right side. You have to pass on the left. But it happens a lot that someone is driving rather slowly on the left side of the Autobahn, so you can't pass him. A lot of drivers then decide to drive up really close from behind and even use their lights to make the slow driver get out of their way. If the slow driver feels threatened by you, he might call the police and you might get into some serious trouble, especially if he got scared and caused an accident because of you sitting on his back. You may even go to jail for this. Passing him on the right side is much cheaper. If police catches you doing this, you have to pay 100€ and receive a penalty point on your driver's register, but that's it.

What you call a TV "tax" is actually a (compulsory) radio and TV *fee* - some people recently argued that it _is_ in fact a tax and that the German states, who introduced it in a treaty (Rundfunkstaatsvertrag), were not allowed to do this. They lost in court IIRC. And you don't pay this fee directly to the "government", not even to the state, but to some body set up by the public broadcasters (the "Beitragsservice", formerly "Gebühreinzugszentrale" or "GEZ").

Other things common in Germany you don't have in the US: 1.) H-Milch - packaged milk which doesn't require refrigeration before opening 2.) chocolate with alcohol (Rumkugeln, Mon Cheri, Ritter Sport Rum-Traube-Nuss, Weinbrandbohnen and so on) 3.) Quark 4.) Tempo Taschentücher (paper handkerchiefs in small packages, you use kleenex boxes instead, but those are kind of difficult to carry around in a purse or pocket)

some of those things are actually quite common in not only Germany but Europe. Like the parking disc u mentioned, but also the kinderwurst for example in Belgium (like from a children show called Samson & Gert and is named Samsonworst :D and it is also quite common that children get a free slice in the store) and some other countries also have that cola mix and also the Identity card

The fashion of shaping Kinderwurst into faces and bears is rather recent (like 10-15 years or so). When I was a kid, there was also Kinderwurst, but it was basically just mortadella. However, it was and still is fashionable to roll up a slice of that Kinderwurst and hand it over the bucher's counter to kids who go shopping with their parents, both as a favor to customers and a good training of manners for the kid ("say thank you!").

Kindergeld is meant for people who don't pay enough for the children tax credit to make a difference. In Germany government support for having children was introduced because even at the beginning of the Bundesrepublik politicians knew that Germany didn't really have much in the way of natural resources. The city where I grew up in CA has at least a version of a quiet law for Sundays and of course after a certain time at night. In fact there was a bit of an incident when one of our neighbor's gardener decided he wanted to work on their lawn on a Sunday. I was shocked when it happened because I had never heard anyone do lawn work on a Sunday before, and my family discussed among ourselves if that was allowed. Just one of those things where we didn't know if it was against the law, but had never encountered it before. He stopped after a couple of weeks and I later found out it was because a couple of neighbors complained and brought the city ordinance to the owner saying it's not allowed. However, we've had bbq's with music in our backyard on Sundays and in the nearly 30 years since my parents lived there, no one had a problem with that.

@@Kellydoesherthing You really missed something not trying Mett. I know a few people that aren't from Germany and there were also a little bit disgusted by the imagination of eating rare pork in forehand. But they liked it afterwards. You should definitely try Mett and Tartar when you are back. Tartar is a little bit harder to get but a good butcher will grind you the beef fresh for Tartar. This is important. The other minced beef is usually for cooking. I won't eat this either. I am not a fan of a rare steak. This isn't right. It is raw but warm and when you cut it all the meaty juice is running out. Tartar is much better in my opinion.

@helloweener2007
@helloweener2007 5 жыл бұрын
@@dutchgamer842 He meant in preparation. Mett is very similar to Tartar. One is pork, the other is beef. And if it is safer it depends on the food regulations. As a kid I learnt that you should not eat the raw beef. Reason was that the inspection for pork was more strict. You can have trichina worms in pork or beef as well and in other animals that are eaten. But all meat is checked today because of the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/1375 which gives specific rules on official controls for Trichinella in meat. I don't exactly how it was before in the EU but I know that there were similar regulations for Germany. So worms aren't a big danger when you eat raw meat. You could also get it from air dryed or cold smoked ham. The danger are bacteria. And this is the same for pork and beef. It is the immense surface of grinded meat that leads to massive growing of bacteria. So you have to cool it. There are different regulations for grinded meat that is supposed to be eaten raw than to the one that is supposed to be cooked. Grinded meat you get in the supermarkets in Germany is for cooking and frying. And there is a warning on it. "Vor dem Verzehr gut durchbraten" (Cook it through before eating). On pork or beef that you can eat raw is no warning. Beef for tartar you can only get at the butcher's or the butcher's counter, not in self-service. Mett you can get in self-service because it is processed a little bit. And much more people buy Mett than Tartar. So it would be a bad deal for the supermarkets to store it. To much would go to the bin because they have to sell it the same day. There is also bacon that is specifically sold for frying as a breakfast bacon. It is also labelled with "Nicht roh verzehren" (Don't eat it raw). So it is all about meat inspection, hygiene regulations and the cooling chain if a grinded meat is allowed to be sold for eating raw or not. This is the situation here in Germany.

Regarding the parking disks... If you think, "Oh I can come back after 2 hours and just set the time to 10 o´clock", that´s not how it works. If you are being checked, they write down the position of the valves of your wheels. Next time they will check your parking time, they will also check the valves again and see if your car has moved or not.

To avoid a few misunderstandings: The quiet hours are determined by the commune in which you live. These are usually at lunchtime (noon) and Sunday afternoon. You can still spend your free time as you like and of course, you can go to sports, hiking, cycling, ... But you should avoid noisy activities at home like mowing the lawn out of respect for your neighbors who might want to sleep at these times. Especially with children, it is normal that they are louder when they play on the street. Some (mostly older and single) people are less tolerant and call the police immediately but in a children-friendly neighborhood, you have almost no restrictions. Outside the city, you can't disturb anyone, so just go for a hike on Sundays ;) Is better than wasting your time on the couch watching terrible shows and series by our public or private (financed by advertisements) tv channels. The reporting in both cases and in the newspapers leaves to be desired and is not free of opinion e. g. in general pro-America, but right now against Trump, contra Turkey/Russia - independent from facts. I mean, I don't want to start a political discussion here, because there are many facts why you should think critically, there are many pros and cons and not everything about the US (sorry for that) is awesome, for example, if you think about privacy, but it is a fact, that the news in Germany measures with two different measures and most Germans get outraged easily about something happened and heared in the news without thinking fair about it. Good news should only inform people and should not add their opinion. No wonder that people made more out of the Dieselgate than it actually was - by the way, the debate about it in Germany was way harder than in the US.

it especially affects night time. generally from 10pm to 5-6am you are not allowed to raise noise above normal talking volume. this is especially relevant, as most germans live in rented flats in the cities and often the houses are modernised buildings from the 60s with bad sound insulation. this law guarantees you a quiet night for weekdays, as normaly you have to go to work around 6-7am and want to sleep calmly at night. if this law is violated, it can go even as far as the police getting called and you have to pay a fine and sometimes even have to stand infront of a court for it and get sentenced, loosing your flat etc

I've driven to both my post office, pharmacy, feed store, and Hausarzt during the day only to turn around cuz they were closed. During the day. Aldi is open at noon, and not during the "hours of rest", how? @@CheefCoach You don't have to declare yourself atheist to do that. Church tax is basically a subscription fee for the churches that is collected by the state. Children of christians usually are church members since early childhood (baptism comes with church membership). Even if they turn atheist as adults/teens, they often don't leave the church out of laziness until they finally quit (statistics show that the number of christians in Germany is lower than the number of church members). But there are also quite a few christians who quit the churches, because they didn't agree with them on certain points.

I am new to your channel, and as a travelling german (been to the US twice thanks to an old school friend who emigrated to Colorado and I have also been to Australia and several other europena countries) I have to thank you for your views on my country. It is amazing how much we can learn of ourselves from people who visit us (as well as visiting other countries ourselves). But regarding the "Rundfunkbeitrag": It is not a "Tax". Taxes (at least according to the German definition) are just put into the general money the gouvernment can spend. A "Beitrag" (Contribution) is exclusively limited to the cause it is raised for. So in this case the public TV stations. They are (in theory) independent of gouvernment and politics, but (due to how representatives are elected, e.g. politicians in many cases) not entirely so. The educational and informational programms are doing quite a good job though, but sports coverage (essentially football, or soccer as you americans call it as well as Olympia) is unneccesary. Anyway: Thanks for your views and keep up the good work! Had a lot of "a-ha" moments already :). (Both for the US as well as Germany :D)

It's not just Kindergeld (that's ~200€ per child). There's also Elterngeld, where you can stay home for 14 Months for each child and still get paid about 65% of your income. There's Elternzeit which enables you to take a break from your job for up to 3 years and be able to continue after that, while your employer basically has no way of objecting.

Having a national ID card isn't compulsory. We have to have either a national ID card or a passport, but the ID card in credit card size is so much easier to carry around if you want to identify yourself or for example prove your age. (By the way on German territory German citizens aren't required to carry a document of identification all the time, but are only required to own one.)

@@Kellydoesherthing I'm sorry to tell you, but maybe you didn't read the whole law. The Personalausweisgesetz § 1 (2) 3rd September says (shortened) that the Ausweispflicht is also fulfilled by those who own a passport. The (German) driving license has a photo, so it is also an "amtlicher Lichtbildausweis" and valid without the national ID. I worked at a polling station for the last two elections and we were told if somebody doesn't carry national ID or passport we may also except driving license, foreign ID (especially for non german EU citizens in Kommunalwahl), expired national IDs and I think the military ID card is also an amtlicher Lichtbildausweis. But one photo document to vote in your polling station if the volunteer there doesn't know you in person like if you live in a small village. If you want to vote at a different polling station within you district you also have to bring your Wahlbenachrichtigung besides a Lichtbildausweis

@@mahuhude Careful here. You are giving one piece of false information. A driver’s licence is not an "Ausweis“ in Germany because it is considered a certificate rather than a form of ID. It only allows you to drive a car, not to ascertain your identity. Many people in Germany get that wrong, but that is what the law is. Additionally, you do not normally need your Wahlberechtigung to a polling station a "Personalausweis" or a "Reisepass" do suffice, Führerschein does not. There are rare cases when you do need the Wahlberechtigung as well. Most of them are related to moving into the polling district before the list of voters was compiled and therefore having to be added to the list.

Important about the TV-tax: it's not a tax and it's not the state who collects it. To ensure free press this system allows the public broadcasters to collect that fee, its backed by law but the state has no say on what it is spent on or even how much it actually is. There is a commitee that has representatives of the state, but also of churches, unions, nonprofit organizations, and so on. They make these descisions. It's simply there to ensure that stuff doesn't happen like back in the '20s-'30s with the nazis, and there will always be a as-neutral-as-possible news source available.
@Thiesi
@Thiesi 5 жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting to that if it actually was a tax the government would be free to spend it on whatever they want (within the usual legal boundaries, of course) as taxes are always non-earmarked funds. Plus, the government and the state are not even allowed to operate or subsidize public TV or radio stations here so state budgetary funds could never be used to financially support TV or radio stations, thus making a TV tax even more impossible.
@duaneweaver537

It is not important who actual collects the money or who spends the money collected. If the government's rules require the collection from all regardless of who uses the service, and the government enforces the punishment against those that don't pay, then it's is a tax in all the world except in German where the government says a tax isn't a tax.

Met: Ok, some explanation: This kind of meat is usable only very short time. Down below somebody wrote about "workers marmalade" - that's god explanation: Since long time you could not only buy meat at the butchers, but also Brötchen (comparable to a bagel) - peace of bread and already arranged with topping. Workers like it very much to have such a piece with fresh minced meat on top. Traditional the meat is already prepared with seasoning, and on top of such a "Mettbrötchen" there has to be some rings of fresh onion. The "Mettigel" - I think, that's absolutely not so common (also due to the short time of consuming it). During the 50th when the Germans got enough to eat, they began to arrange parties. Then there arised the first shows in TV with cooking. So there developed a habit of decoration the buffet. In this habit you have to see the "Mettigel" - sometimes there should be served Mett - you absolutely could serve it in a lumb - it had to be decorated. This was the birth of the Mettigel.

When the party takes a bit longer or its going to be loud, put a notice that everybody can see or invite them. About barbecue and etc. Thats just neighbours... When you got bad luck, they are gonna complain. Open fire is on the balcony, in your house, on your garden, not aloud! You have to ask the police or firestation first! Kindergeld is NOT a allowance for the children! It is for the children (till they reach the age of 18. It can be paid to the age of 25, if the child studies.), its a help for the children. And it will be paid to the parents so that they buy clothing and etc for them till they grow up. Some parents give their children the Kindergeld, up age 16, so that they buy their own stuff (no time), but that rather goes for the better earning people. Other parents say "hey we keep your Kindergeld and so you dont have to pay rent, food and etc" - when the child is already grown up and can work. Children can only get the Kindergeld for themself when they are Orphans or when the parents leaved the child alone and nobody knows where they are. I hate to say this, but back then in WW2, the National Socialism brought the Kindergeld out. Hope i can explain a bit :)
