I’m fairly young (mid 20s) and I work in a machine shop. I recently walked in smoking my pipe and got a good reaction out of the fellas there lol

A nice pipe and a good cup of black tea from India or Ceylon go together like crumpets and butter.

Mr English I'm just getting into it, but I've found it enjoyable so far. It certainly is difficult to get it going but when you do it doesn't go out, at least that's what I've found. What I tend to do is light it, then push it all down with a metal tamper, so the hot coals get embedded in the tobacco. Then I relight it and it gets going fairly well. Cigars are great, but more expensive. I actually enjoy the whole process of packing a pipe and whatnot, but it isn't for everyone. Also, with a pipe you can throw just a small amount of tobacco if you don't want to smoke a lot, can't really do the same with a cigar.

Yes, #1 is true. I read a smoking study several years ago based on extended empirical research. The conclusions stated that the average cigarette smoker loses 7-years of life, the average cigar smoker loses 2-years, while the average pipe smoker *adds* 2-years. - I guess it should be noted that pipe smoking is definitely a personality thing. The pipe is not for everyone.

I tried this beneath a massive wasp nest. Didn't work. I was running, smoking, getting the shit stung out of me. Got younger bite cuz I ran with my pipe. So bees and red wasps think differently about pipes.

Joffrey, I humbly disagree. My beloved uncle smoked a pipe, and I loved the smell of it. It looked cool, and prestige, but sadly it is not something I would recommend, because my uncle got throat cancer, and endure a lot of suffering through all of his treatment. That was just the beginning. As he recovered from all of his treatment for several years, then retired, and move to Albuquerque, from Southern California. Within a year of his retirement, he was having trouble eating, and went through a lot of therapy, to stretch his throat or esophagus out, so he could swallow and eat food better. He eventually could only eat yogurts, apple sauce, broth, until he could no longer eat, due to scar tissue. The last two years of his life he had to be fed intravenously. It was awful to witness, especially celebrating his birthday, and could have cake etc.... Although, I love the smell of pipes, and how it makes someone look distinguished and interesting, I would much rather be attracted to some Heart, and health. Take care. I am sorry if I bust your bubble. I just don’t wish this experience on anyone. It’s not worth it. 🙏

Unless you smoke a lot, pipe smoking and cigar smoking has very few health negatives. Most studies on cigars show very few health effects for anyone who smokes less than 2 cigars a day. However, above 2 a day it starts to get exponentially worse. Just try not to smoke more than 1 bowl or cigar a day and you will be fine.

This is very good. On the first point, it might be mentioned that the Surgeon General of the United States in the famous report of the 1960s trashing cigarette smoking cited statistics indicating that pipe smokers live an average of two to three years longer than nonsmokers. While some people might say that this is ridiculous, we pipesters are aware that pipe smoking is soothing and calming, which will keep our bodies functioning with fewer misfires than those of nonsmokers who spend their lives worrying and fretting.

Though i am a pipesmoker myself and i am loving it but i think it needs to be said that there will be 8 more or less valid reasons to not smoke a pipe too. Joffre The Giant okay, i've done the legwork for you. the only sites that claim pipe smokers live longer, are pipe smoking websites that provide no source for that claim. there is however, a study from the netherlands that reports the expected loss of lifetime for pipesmoking to be 4.7 years, as opposed to 8.8 years for cigarette smoking. if that is what you meant, #1 is articulated in a very misleading way. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2598467/

I have a book that I bought back in the 70s that has a chapter that describes research done that concluded that cigarette smokers have an average lifespan shorter than nonsmokers, cigar smokers not much different than nonsmokers, and that pipe smokers have an average lifespan slightly longer than nonsmokers. But who knows why? No one said that pipe smoking itself leads to a longer life, but perhaps pipe smokers tend (remember, this is all about AVERAGES) to live a healthier life in other ways. Better diet, etcetera. None of these things, especially when it comes to any given individual, are as simple as the current, intolerant antismoking propaganda surrounding us 24/7.

Cigarettes are by far the worst. The United States prior to the war on big tobacco, had research indicating pipe smokers with decent habits may literally be in correlation with longer lifespans then non-smokers. After the war on tobacco started, all tobacco was just mashed into one evil propaganda fight, both for and against tobacco, and so the video posters statement, is neither proven nor disproven to this day. Personally, I think the polyester and glue in cigarettes are the worst thing about them, next to the addiction rate. They sure are nasty and definitivly proven to be bad for you big time. That much is known

Firstly I'd like to say that I can't tell people what to do. If you want to smoke, it's your choice. I myself came across this video after watching Lord of the Rings where Gandalf and the hobbits are seen smoking these kinds of pipes haha . I'm not gonna lie.....the pipes look freakin' cool and I understand that people find it to be relaxing and cathartic. BUT...that being said there is no denying that smoking pipes comes at a price. Even if you guys don't decide to read everything or care about it just know this: If you can decrease the amount of smoking, great If you can QUIT smoking, even better. So without further ado, here are just some articles that I found regarding pipe smoking: Pipe-smoking vs Cigarette smoking Tverdal and Bjartveit's 2011 study findings: Pipe smoking have a risk of dying from specified smoking related diseases that is significantly higher than in non-smokers They found no significant difference in men who switched from cigarettes only to pipe only smoking; aka same risk Full paper: Tverdal, A., & Bjartveit, K.
