Great selections. I think King Kong is one of the 3 greatest movies ever made, regardless of genre. An absolute masterpiece. If i was to recommend other b&w horror movies to people, I would go with Cat People, The House on Haunted Hill, The Bat, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Them, and of course, the Universal monster classics.

He already included House on Haunted Hill and Unversal's Wolfman in last year's video.

Some of mine not already mentioned in either video, Eyes Without A Face (1960) Hour of the Wolf (1968) The Lighthouse (2019) El Conde (2023) Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) (I really see it as more sci-fi, but it counts as horror) Man Bites Dog (1992) Eraserhead (1977) Onibaba (1964) Repulsion (1965) Young Frankenstein (1974) (horror comedy, but still great) The Haunting (1963)

Bette Davis wouldn't do Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte without Olivia de Havilland. That's who she wanted to play that role and made it an ultimatum. Bette thought Olivia was one of the finest actresses of her generation.
@quitequiet1 Жыл бұрын
Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte re-teamed Bette Davis with Joan Crawford after the success of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. After filming started, Joan Crawford bowed out with claim of illness and was replaced by Olivia de Havilland (I’m sure through Bette Davis’ suggestion).
@BaileeWalsh Жыл бұрын
@quitequiet1 yes, I read Bette Davis' autobiographies and Kathryn Sermak's memoir this past summer. and that's something I remembered when Nathan mentioned the film. He already knew I had read them so I didn't mention it. Bette knew Joan was wrong for that role, which Joan herself seemingly realized.

Bunny Lake Is Missing is a fantastic film especially on first watch. Not sure there's much repeat watch value in it after it loses that mystery element mind.
@JacobNeff77 Жыл бұрын
I still need to see half of yours, including THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. I agree that HUSH... HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE and BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING deserve more attention. Here are my contributions: 1. Eyes Without a Face (1960) 2. What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) 3. The Unknown (1927) 4. House on Haunted Hill (1959) 5. Nosferatu (1922) 6. The Addiction (1995) 7. The Last Warning (1929) 8. The Black Room (1935)

I think 1966’s ‘Seconds’ starring Rock Hudson is an amazing horror film it is unsettling, nauseating at times, and the ending is horrifying. Rock Hudson picked to be in the role after he had been typed cast as a man representing masculinity for years due to classic hollywood being so restrictive over his persona and exterior. This film almost highlights these struggles and without spoiling it the film meant a lot to him and RIP Rock Hudson… actually he should be known as what he wanted to be know as his real name and identity RIP Roy Scheerer. But anyway great black and white horror would definitely recommend. Gorgeous cinematography, eye candy aesthetic and great themes

Thanks for your suggestion. After watching your video I bought the DVD of “Taste of Fear”. I guess it was released in the U.S. under the title of “Scream of Fear” so I had to search for that name. I thought the movie was great! Because you mentioned that there were a lot of twists to it, I kept second guessing what’s going on so I wasn’t as surprised at the ending as I would’ve otherwise, but I still loved it. (Spoiler) I felt that the movie made sense and I wouldn’t mind giving it a second watch. The one thing that may not make sense was having the police think the father just drowned from a car an accident. I would assume the police could determine the time of death to be a week ago. Susan Strasberg falling into the pool was a bit of a stretch also. How did she know someone will save her? My only guess is that she actually didn’t swim so she really needed saving. Overall, I think it’s a little gem of a movie. It probably would’ve gained a much larger reputation if it were hemmed by a more famous director like Hitchcock.

So glad you liked it! Yeah Susan falling in the pool was the biggest question mark for me for the exact same reason! It makes it so her plan has to go EXACTLY according to plan otherwise it's all ruined.

Oooh that's a great question! I don't think I would personally count it as it's not strictly labeled a horror film, but if someone included it on their list, I would understand why!

The OG Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a masterpiece. I'm glad it's getting the 4K treatment. A must-buy! King Kong is also a masterpiece, too bad the dialogue is terrible and the 1st act drags. I think that King Kong would have been even better if it was a silent movie. I used to hold it in a higher regard. Technically speaking, still the best monster movie ever made. I remember thinking The Haunting (1963) was pretty spooky too. It's amazing to think Robert Wise shot this movie between his 2 best-known films: West Side Story (1961) and The Sound of Music (1965). He is so underrated and can do any genre regardless of budget. The dude edited "Citizen Kane", for crying out loud! PS: He also did The Body Snatcher (1945) with Bela Lugosi, so he was snatching bodies before it was cool! Hahahaa.
