You touched on several of my FAVORITE RPG's. One of my first games I ever delved into was Rhapsody on the PS1 - as a 12 year old girl, I loved playing as the heroine rescuing the prince haha. This was such a great throwback, thank you!

I am glad females had games like that to relate to. Us young men didn't know how good we had it when it came to identifying with the characters. Secret of mana always comes to mind, switching to the female characters was such a fun experience.
@DimT670
@DimT670 7 ай бұрын
@@TonicofSonic the problem isnt identifying with the characters , anyone can identify with anyone. Its like, what, you can identify with a literal immortal elf wizard but not if they happen to be a woman kind of thing The problem is one of representation, which groups are deemed worthy of even being featured as meaningful capable characters with agency a game encourages you to identify with in the first place vs who gets to be a glorified quest item or sexy lamps. Whether a game shows that ppl like you can be equal member of the cast or whether ppl like you are to be side-lined/entirely absent Way too many games then and even now put women in the second category and has em as mostly non characters ineffectual love interests literal quest destinations or objects of sexual gratification. This not only sends the message to women that this space purposefully excludes them but also promotes a whole host of problematic beliefs about women Its no coincidence the experience of far too many women in gaming spaces is absolutely miserable, if they are allowed to exist at all instead of discouraged at any opportunity

Man, I'm playing Grandia 1 rn, and it's gotta be one of the coziest JRPs ever. Literally feels like you're playing an old school 90s anime. Game is so good. I love all the times you get to eat dinner, or camp out and talk with your party too.

Legend of Mana is one of my favorite games of all time, I randomly rented it from blockbuster one day as a kid and was blown away that games could just like…look, sound and play like rhat?? I can build the world myself? Choose my route? What?? It was almost overwhelming for real

It has a ton of depth too. If you don't have a guide you will miss out on a lot of quests and even skills due to how they're unlocked. Crafting is also insanely complex, but makes OP items if perfected.

I had some of the best memories hanging out with my cousin and caving in when we played Dark Cloud 2. He would play as Max and I'm Monica for all character specific dungeons, he would also do all the Spheda and Monster photo challenges while I catch, train the fishies and take photos all around each town. We would also brainstorm the heck out of those builder mode portions of the game and talk about it non stop when his parents made us dinner. Such a fantastic game, hope it gets ported on the Switch.

I absolutely love Legend of Mana. At first, when I tried playing it when it came out, I didn't like it much. But when I came back to it 3 years ago, I fell in love with it. It's a game that plays like no other game. It's beautiful, sounds lovely, and has a charm that is timeless. With Visions of Mana coming out soon, I'm ecstatic! I'd also like to see a Legend of Mana 2, as I believe it is deserving of it's own sequel. Also, did anyone else identify the statues in the palace as the 6 heroes from Trials of Mana?

Legend of Mana was my summer one year when I was young. Got it used for next to nothing, and it blew me away. I saw someone write about it once that you don't so much play a story as much as the game just lets you live in the world for awhile and I think that is the perfect description.
@mizukane7247

Trails in the sky, and SC (not quite finished SC yet) are just such good games. There's nothing flashy, just a good combat system, great music and probably the most fleshed out characters and world in any JRPG series I've played. They really are incredibly relaxing to play... Almost too relaxing, I find myself playing for 12+ hours without even thinking about it. There's something extra special about talking to every NPC at every opportunity. Yes it's made my playthrough of the two take about 50 hours longer than it would have otherwise but seeing all the little stories come together for each NPC has been so rewarding. The down time between story moments has just made it that much more relaxing to play. Can't wait to see what the rest of the series has in store.

I actually started playing the trails in the sky series a few months ago. I'm in the fifth game right now out of the nine, and I must that for someone who hasn't played a proper JRPG in years, or didn't really bother with stories in games at all, it has been a refreshing breath to jump in a series I knew nothing about and gettting involved in that huge story has been so rewarding so far. It takes a lot of time thought, each game took me about 50hrs doing every side quest and everything possible in a single playthrough, but it's really worth the time if you have been looking to jump in JRPG series, and even better if you knew nothing about it at all beforehand like I did.

For me the coziest RPGs are ones where I can really lose myself in the grind or the adventure. Dragon Quest 9, Pokemon and Bravely Default are some great games to immerse yourself in and relax, especially because they were on the DS. Nowadays I really like Persona or Like a Dragon for how easy it is to drop in and play for a little bit, just walking around doing odd tasks or grinding in a dungeon

One game I would add to this list is Tales of Vesperia. Once you learn and practice the combat nothing is overly difficult especially if you just play on normal for a fun time. The story is simple, the characters are charming and while yes, there's an evil empire to take down it never takes itself too seriously. Half the story points devolve into "Oh no, the bad guys are winning!" Yuri: "ouch, bummer, well let's go beat them then."

I thought it was just me that felt this way about Legend of Mana. SOM even does this to me; getting trounced in a wintry forest to a beautiful crystalline theme. We can thank FF for even the word crystal sounding like a sound or a song :) it’s never been popular anywhere that I’ve seen except fringe but Jade Cocoon 2 is cozy to me. A huge little world all safe and contained to explore . Those colors are thankfully coming back, I see cartoon modern in a lot of great new app games (Phobies etc).

Older RPGs that had campy activities you could do on the side made you feel more inside the world, instead of just playing through a main plot. It's what I always thought was going to happen with open world games, yet the vast majority of them almost completely leave out such things. So the environments are massive, but it's still just a main campaign with just more walking in between. I've been personally cobbling together a mid-sized 3d third-person, open world, prioritizing full interactivity with the environment. Fishing, foraging, hunting/combat, remedies, camping, exploration, etc. And every activity builds character skill and attributes, much like you see in Stardew Valley. Of course, I'm more into the Edgar Allan Poe feel, so the theme and story will be more melancholic, lonely, and horror........but with fishing!

Love to see Legend of Mana starting off this list, but even so, I feel you didn't quite express the extent of the game's coziness! First, I would say the open quest structure is key to its coziness. It kind of feels like a game full of sidequests, with an appropriate range of tasks and vibes. While the main plots can get serious, a lot of the quests are just helping somebody out with something pretty low-stakes. Second, the game has an amazingly cozy core gameplay loop. You go out, do a quest, and then come home to tell your cactus about it and check on your pets and your garden before heading out for the next quest. In a way, it's a predecessor to a host of RPG/farming hybrid games!

I really really love how positive you keep these videos, and how non-judgemental you are about these games. I'll be honest, I'm kind of done watching drama content or weird negativity channels and just gravitate more and more towards people just talking about cool things they like. And this video and really your entire channel is a great example of this.

Thanks dude, really appreciate that. Yeah I feel there’s enough cynical content out there and I just think it’s fun to try to find the good in things no matter how rough in other areas they may be. It’s not like any developers ever really set out to make a bad game on purpose so there’s always some positives and cool stuff worth highlighting and taking away from an experience

Trails in the Sky like many Falcom games until Ys Seven was actually developed for the PC first and then was later ported to the PSP. The version on Steam is the original Version of Trails in the Sky translated.

That little musical number you add in as titles appear sounds extremely nostalgic to me. It sounds exactly like the starting notes of the Totally Rad Intro track. An old NES game I used to play all the time as a kid. Give it a listen and you'll know exactly what I mean.

Ikenfell must be mentioned. it's a newer rpg about a cozy witch school. cats are save points. battles are turn based with timed hits. sound track is also fantastic.

I would say that Children of Mana was pretty dang cozy to play too, I have a lot of good memories playing it with my son when he was little. I miss those times. Good list though! Magical Starsign was a lot of fun too.

Adventure of Mana for the PS Vita specifically is super cozy. I also really enjoyed Knight Quest for Gameboy. 5 hour game, but really easy to pick up and play. Dragon Quest 1 also deserves some love, 4-10 hour game, very simple, easy to play on switch specifically, but I did beat it on GBC as well.

I love Legend of Mana so much, probably my favorite JRPG. Not the objective GOAT for sure, it's not for everybody. But it's _definitely_ for me.

I never knew the male protagonist from dark cloud 2 was also Lloyd from tales of symphonia...what a whirlwind of throwbacks, lol.

Lot of great games on this list. Legend of Mana, in particular, is absolutely wonderful. It's what I like to call an "anthology RPG" because there is no single story and no single path to go down, nor should you care about that as you play. It's a storybook that the devs want you to just exist in and explore around. It can be opaque as hell at times if you do want to specifically pursue a particular narrative thread, but it's ultimately a game you just sit back, relax, and play. Enjoy the graphics, enjoy the banging soundtrack, and enjoy all the fun little characters.

I've played Legend of Mana on PS2 and took me half of the game to finally hit me that this was a PSOne title. That's how good the graphics are. People talk about Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy, but for me, the visuals for this game is just perfect.

Guardian's Crusade for PS1! Haven't played it as an adult so I'm not sure how well it has stood the test of time, but I have a deep nostalgic history with that game. Also, Tomba! Action platformer with heavy RPG elements.
