Can't believe I'm seeing this video so late! I have thoughts. 🤓 I bought my PS4 for FFXV (it's a limited edition FFXV slim line PS4) but it will be remembered for the Trails of Cold Steel Series. From 2019 to 2021 I have spent altogether around 650 hours between Trails of Cold Steel I through IV. I haven't played the other Trails arcs, but I have watched multiple summaries, researched and plan on playing the Crossbell arc now that Falcom has announced that they are doing a Western release. I'm officially a hardcore Kiseki fan, am in it for the long-haul and am desperately awaiting Hajimari/Reverie. Eating up Kuro no Kiseki content whilst avoiding spoilers has been a bitch! Oh, and Class VII forever. 😎 I love that you guys gave love to two Falcom series in this video. I've yet to touch an Ys game, but I'm just waiting for VIII or IX to go on sale for the right price! I've often asked myself the question which console has the best JRPGs and I often come back to PS1, but I have to admit your intro to this video has made me consider the PS4 for the first time. It definitely deserves the praise and has left its mark. Excellent video as always gentlemen. Only further reinforces my choice in backing you on Patreon. More people need to do so! 👍🏾

Seeing as you're a fan of Cold Steel, I'd say play through Sky 1-3 on PC as you wait for Hajimari/Reverie & Zero + Azure, though you've watched them already. I'm playing through Hajimari on PS5 using a capture card and geofield translations overlay. We'll be getting Zero, Azure & Reverie in the next 1-2 years. Who's to say when we'll get Kuro, lol. I do have my Japanese copy (Spriggan Edition), but I'll wait until Geofield's done w/ their translation to play it. I can read/write Japanese, but not enough to have a 100% understanding of slang and the like in a Japanese game. But yes, I will be buying Reverie CE as soon as it comes to the west in 2023. I've got the Japanese Hajimari platinum edition + the incredibly beautiful geo steelbook for it. Goes well with the other CS1-4 steelbooks and merch, lol. With that being said, if you're a fan of the Falcom games, Ys is definitely worth it. It's not as long as CS, but hell, I'd say it's worth it at full price. Also check out Tokyo Xanadu as well. It's got some CS references in it too! P.S. Ys9 is on sale right now for $30, so go ahead and snag it now!

@@HellzAssassn Much respect to a hardcore Falcom fan! I would dig in to the Liberl Arc like you're suggesting but it's more a question of time and resources. I don't PC game at all, don't own a PSP (nor am I going to buy one just for that) and I have other things to play at this point (like Y's!) that I rather dig into rather than a plot where I already know the details of. Heck, it's already a stretch that I'm going to go back and play the Crossbell Arc, all things considered 😅. I WISH I had the time I did 20 years ago to game like I used to, but social and professional obligations being what they are means I got to pick and choose what I play very carefully. Probably doesn't help that I play all my games on hard and play at a ridiculously slow pace haha (major gameplay optimizer and overthinker here)!

Minor Spoiler Warning; So regarding 'Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana' I had a standing gripe with this game, you are absolutely correct that the Island and exploration is indeed amazing. However! Within the story of the game there are 'Two' completely unrelated storylines at play that feel like they are being violently shoved together just for the lack of ideas. When it came to the island and building a base, trying to survive and explore the Isle? it was amazing / but then at the half way mark they shoved in 'time travel' and this 'end of the universe' garbage that just poisoned the entire game for me personally. It was one of those cases of 'less is more' and the story of 'Dana' and the 'Lacrimosa' could have and SHOULD have been left to its own game entirely. It would have made the game so much better and not undercut the entire point of everything you have done until that point, because really! when you have 'the entire universe is at stake' do you really care about survivors on an island? No, these were clearly two stories intended to be for separate projects that were quickly pasted together to make a bargain bin storyline.
@PantsaBear2 жыл бұрын
I couldnt disagree more honestly. Dana living a past life and now being a part of the current one is a tragedy, and the fact the player needs to go through it all despite knowing the end result of what happens to her people is what really twists the knife. One could argue it has themes about moving on from grief when all that you cared about is gone, and its super resonant for that reason. Not only that, I think it fits in perfectly with Adol having his own story, with his own situation with actual hope for the future. Dana recognizes that and uses that to move on, which is why I think she is so personable to many people playing that game. Your question "why care about the survivors when the entire universe is at stake" is intentional. They need to survive, both due to island reasons but also due to thel unexpected supernatural ones as well. The entire game plays on the idea on "survival" and what stakes that really includes, as evidenced by the enemies being dinosaurs and Dana'a entire plotline realy. It starts as a tale about surviving on an island and escalates to surviving on the scale of the human race. The only aspect of the game that fell a little flat to me was the last boss not in "tone", but in "what it actually is/looks like", but that feeling fleeted quickly because I love the way Dana's story ends: as a martyr for not only her generation but for all those going forward. Adol's story is one about saving the ones he cares about now, and Dana's is about failing to do what Adol is trying to do and helping him do what she could not alone. Both of them most definitely belong to have their stories in the same game.
@badmojo902 жыл бұрын
@@PantsaBear I am sorry No, it not only doesn't fit story wise, but canonically it flatly runs counter to the other 'world origin' stories in the Y's saga (which already has 3 contradicting world origin stories on top of this one) The Story of "Dana" was admitted by the Writer that it was not originally intended to be part of Y's and does not fit in any sense to the story or world itself.
@wesleyleigh40632 жыл бұрын
Yeah i really enjoyed Tale of Arise, the quality that didn't suit me though was the capping of EXP earned to counter you becoming overpowered. It's not a terrible mechanic it was just a little heavy and seriously disincentivized levelling. There was a plethora of boss enemies, though the combat did feel a little lacklustre - I almost never used the normal attack, but also most bosses just had a bloated health pool and just felt a little slow. Overall the level design and the character variability was really polished and thought out. There is however one section of the game that is close to 3 hours worth of cutscenes and walking from one NPC to another, and often the dialogue involved is so excessive and pointless, but you have to listen to it lest they finally uncover something important. Love the soundtrack, the voice acting and the story wasn't terrible - If a little tone confused. It wants to light hearted and approachable yet also include mass genocide, just a little jarring is all.
@sethchandler4170 Жыл бұрын
Gross I do not like that. An experience cap? I really don't like when game designers constrict freedom of play. The function of it makes no sense anyways. What is the thought? That gamers are too stupid to play the way they like? Like we are a bunch a babies who need their hands held?

Here's a side note: Play the first two CS games and loop back to Sky and Crossbell before jumping onto CS3, the reason is simple the last two CS games including Reverie heavily relies on events/plots and returning characters from the previous two arcs that to any newcomer lacking context will have a hard time understanding what's happening. The Trails series as a whole is massive consisting of 4 interconnected arcs as of now in the same continent and will expand over time: Liberl (Sky 1-3), Crossbell (Zero, Azure and Reverie), Erebonia (CS 1-4, Reverie) and the current one Calvard (Kuro 1 &2?) that ties into one overarching story in the span of 6-7 years in game.

The Definitive Edition found on the PS4 is a port of the Definitive Edition S from the Switch which had an orchestral version of the soundtrack, more gameplay stuff, etc. but took a hit graphically compared to the original vanilla PS4 version of DQ11 which looked better graphically but the soundtrack was not orchestrated (and was that midi sounding OST). Long story short, the Definitive Edition on the PS4 looks worse than the original release version on the PS4, but is the better gameplay experience and audio experience if you're willing to take a hit to the graphics.

Can you please make a video on games that visually shows customisation rather than just increasing stats. Make the video based on every console. Please please please.

I love anime games. Arpgs and jrpgs. I bought a ps4 slim 1tb cuz I just can't afford a ps5. They still don't exist in stores and scalpers are still selling them around 900-1500 dollars. I probably won't be able to get one until the ps6 comes out and gets scalped haha.

I wish didn't buy Dragon Quest IX as early as I did, because I completely missed out on the retro 16-bit mode unless I re-buy the game, as I guess Square Enix doesn't want to just release this new mode as DLC for existing players, which is really stupid.

Yea, I bought it early as well. I'm not re buying it, unless I find it for 10 bucks or less

It's videos like this that really make me appreciate this genre even more, and also hate ignorant opinions of games like Persona even more. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the "Persona is pedo bait" argument. It's incredibly frustrating and really minimalizes what makes Persona 5 so great.

Played all these and the only one I beat was Yakuza: like a dragon and I did love it. Why do most JRPG's think combat is the only gameplay mechanic that exists. Oh and fishing ofcourse, seriously give me some fun minigames to break up the constant mindless battles and cliched cutscenes or atleast dont make every sidequest just more combat objectives.

that’s what Yakuza is great at right ? I spent so many hours in the pocket cart racer side game in Y0 😂

Do you need to play the other dragon quest games in order to enjoy dragon quest 11? Looks amazing but I've never played any DQ games. Ty for response

Nope! There are some minor callbacks to the first few games that long time fans will appreciate but nothing needed to fully understand the story or anything like that. So enjoy 👍

I just finished DQ11 S after 149 hours (a lot of time idling in the casino though, and idling in general), amazing game but it was a bit too long-winded, really enjoyed everything but I feel if they could have put act 3 into act 2 it would have much better flow, seeing as the side content was really weak for act 2 but great in act 3. Overall definitely recommended. Great list of suggestions, and loving the content on this channel.

A lot of these games on the list I've played and am about to start on P5R as soon as I finish DQ11S. Trails series is a personal favorite here and I really hope I will like Persona. While the flashy menu is a plus for you, I really dislike the design of the persona menu's and overall art style. I hope I will be able to see through that after so much recommendations to play this.

Man, you have Dragon quest 9 on Nintendo DS. Also Dragon Quest 4,5 and 6 remakes. 11 wasn't nearly the franchise's first major entry on the mainline outside Japan after Dragon Quest 8 on PS2
@GamingBroductions3 жыл бұрын
I hear you but I was specifically referring to the full console RPG experience and to that DQXI is the first one we got since 8 on the ps2. There was no new mainline Dragon Quest entry on the PS3 is what I was trying to get at

In my personal opinion, a game is only as good as it is without paid for DLC. If the game is meh before buying DLC then the game is never better than meh. If the game is good before DLC and the DLC makes it god tier, then the game is simply good. I might recommend the DLC to a friend in the later case, but I would never even recommend the first game no matter how good the DLC.

Gonna be honest...PS4 likely has a good 3 or more years left to be a huge focus on development based off the state of the world right now. The whole supply chain issue with computer/electronic parts is gonna continue to be a huge limiting factor to the PS5's (not to mention Xbox Series and even next gen PC parts as well) growth for a good 2 to 3 years as most console owners are projecting not to be able to get enough PS5s out for demand for well into 2023 and possibly into 2024 (ultimately comes down to how much the government keeps trying to push lockdowns which have been shown to be barely effective or have states with leaders that are just incompetent thus slowing down the whole supply chain when it's not needed...i'll leave the political talk at that i guess though). So until the PS5/next gen consoles/PC parts can be reliably supplied it's likely most games will be cross gen for the next 2 to 3 years as quite frankly Devs (especially 3rd party devs) abandoning the PS4 when it has a roughly 100 Million install base over the PS5's roughly 15 to 20 million PS5s out there would be shooting themselves in the foot and throwing money away. So ya until that issue is dealt with PS4 will likely continuing being a JRPG beast for many more years than initially expected (good thing imo cause i don't want a PS5 and the jump in graphics isn't nearly as impressive from PS4 to PS5 as it was from PS1 to PS2, PS2 to PS3, or PS3 to PS4 imo...at least not enough to make me want a PS5 anytime soon (granted Sony's censorship BS is also turning me off PS consoles as well and I'm debating jsut going PC + Switch only rather than PS5)).
