I am having this sound from my hard disk now wat should i do..and is it automatically defragmenting my disk? Whenever i turn on, this sound comes...
@jw1ck
@jw1ck 2 жыл бұрын
@@maxwelldomnic9116 it’s your drive being written to. Sometimes when idle, your computer still has background processes that require the disk to be written to. The reason this video is defragging a disk is because it constantly rearranging the data on the disk and makes that awesome noise, making it consistent rather than the occasional scratching sound you hear at home.

My therapist talked with me about how some forms of therapy should work, basically saying when you have a traumatic event your brain doesn’t necessarily store that information in the correct place at that time due to anxiety etc… and that therapy can help reorganize those traumatic memories and events and put them where they’re supposed to go. My old techy brain immediately thought of it as defragmenting a HDD. This is actually very therapeutic, as if I’m watching all those horrible memories get moved to a proper place in my brain instead of being scattered around randomly. Thanks for the video 👍

Lol, 6 years old and folks are still watching and liking this video! Now doesn't that tell us something?! Ah, the memories! When I got my first pc in 1999, I was fascinated by disk defrag. So much so, I would actually sit for ages watching it happen. It was mesmerizing! There was something so satisfying & calming about all the wee cubes being tidied up, organized and put in place while others were removed. Even the sound felt goooood, as it does now! It felt like me mind was also being defragged at the same time! Heck, here I am doing it again! And btw, it is not a 'getting old' thing. I know this coz I was younger back then. For me it was like free mental therapy, like watching an aquarium of beautiful fishes. Ok, maybe not quite as nice - but defrag did seem to help chill out me brain! Maybe that's what society needs right now, specially the younger ones - a good, hearty, regular defrag! Am I odd? Please tell me I'm not alone in feeling this way? (Ahem) If I am, please disregard this comment... 😳

This is really good. The fan noise is very soothing against the contrast of the whirring of the disk, as it grinds away. If something is intensely busy with its own problems and you are powerless to help out, it gives you the selfless opportunity to relax and let the hours slip away. Thanks!

Reminds me of the late 2000s and early 2010s, when my family had a floortop Dell potato build (xp and later 7), infested with daddy longlegs spiders and running off a super-loud (and super-slow) Western Digital internal drive that would later sadly fail before we could back it up or upgrade the machine to 10 (my parents, experienced in Windows due to having worked at Microsoft, knew the score and skipped 8 like they did Vista). The younger me once snuck downstairs at 5 AM on a weekend day to play on it, its hard drive spinning up was so loud it woke up my parents who were sleeping in a room down the hall. I was grounded from it for a week, and told not to use it before 6 in the morning.

Forgive me, I was but 13. Not going to lie, I sat and watched it write every single sector patiently and sometimes I still do watch progress bars and stuff like that for much longer than I should and I wonder if it harks back to the day when you really had to wait on computers to do their thing.

@hariranormal5584
@hariranormal5584 3 жыл бұрын
Lord Sandwich Even in the Datacenter space; HDD's are still used for mass storage because it is the most economical overall. SSD has beaten HDD in even storage density. A 3.5" SSD today could go upto 100TB using QLC tech, and we aren't even using PLC which would do WAY more. HDD's are at 20TB per 3.5" honestly. If you want to pack the most amount of storage per a given "rack space unit" or so then SSD's actually win. HDD's are just only: cheap. SSD's beat them on almost everything Low power, high speeds, less rate of failure (people could argue with this acctually but eh), custom form factors (SSD's can actually be made into any "weird" form factor. 2.5, 3.5, m.2 is what we see today but just like these types you can even have a weird square box and have an "SSD" on that.)

I am having this sound from my hard disk now wat should i do..and is it automatically defragmenting my disk? Whenever i turn on, his sound comes...

No. The sound is from the magnets moving and controlling the needles and arms of your HDD to access and write data onto the platters. They move more during defrag. It has to load data. More movement is often due to fragmentation though it would sound the same anyways.

It happens to me even if i dont defrag. guess my hard drive has a hard time handling for example a cluster of small files adding up to... say 100 mb. but can easily handle a single 100 mb file. why is that?

I want to hear my HDD so bad I ended up here. I couldn't hear my drive despite using maglev fans and zero rpm. I could hear something but its my pump and nothing else. Not sure what else could be making noises as the fans can be all turned off. I could be hearing the drive but no ticks...? There's activity.
