Consider yourself lucky you haven't taken it. I have, several times, by necessity. The train runs from SA to Chicago and back. It's not uncommon for it to run 3-6 hour late. On my last trip from Dallas to SA, it took 12 hours.

I do the Fort Worth to Austin regularly to play golf with a buddy. $48 round trip. Takes approximately 4.25 hours. If you’ve been on 35 in the last few years you know that the construction is perpetual and I’ve had car trips that took in excess of 5 hours for the same route. Less than a tank of gas and about the same travel time. It’s a no brainer for me.

I have taken the Texas Eagle all the way from SA to Chicago, and while the dining cart wasn't the brightest of highlights, it was never a disappointing trip. I like how they were always informative if anything comes up and have always arrived early in my experience. I just took the train up to Chicago onto Blue Water just a few days ago, and am going back to SA soon.

I rode the Texas Eagle a couple of times between San Antonio and Dallas a few years ago. Coach passengers used to be be able to dine properly in the dining car with all classes. It was such a nice experience being served while watching the scenery go by. Sad to see that experience is only available to the sleeper cars now. The quick meals and snacks used to be available in the bottom level of the observation car. The train feels slow when you see cars passing you on I-35. But around Cleburne, the train really hauls butt!

Lol! My kids, wife and Father in law were at the 7:31 mark. Can’t miss my FIL balled head! He took them to Austin for a train trip from SA and I drove up to bring them back. You got lucky that 59 was leading your train! 59’s my favorite P42DC and I personally think P42DC 59 has the best sounding K5LA out of all the P42’s that we commonly get on the Texas Eagle. 59 has a narrow font K5LA by the way.

59's K5LA is pretty sweet! I think #184 has to be my favorite because of the Phase IV livery. Something about that livery has always resonated with me, not sure why though, just nostalgic for it I guess.

@@pumpkin_it_slawson3588 the “make” is GE. The model is P42. This applies to all locomotives of that type. The additional numbers, are just to identify each one is which so they can keep track. For example, 59 just means it was the 59th locomotive of this model to be built. Some of them might have slight differences, like a different horn, but they’re all basically the same. A few of them have a diferent paint scheme, such as #184 referenced above.

Howdy. Thank you for filming & sharing your video. The poster photo in the lounge car shows the Southwest Chief. A similar (same?) scene was in Amtrak's 2020 wall calendar. You may be interested to know that many years ago (1980s), there was a conductor who worked a portion of the Texas Eagle route, named Zeb Love. He made it a point of knowing everyone on the train, was a bit of a Santa Claus type, and even played matchmaker for single travelers to make sure that no one rides alone on the "Love Train." I learned about him in a chapter of Terry Pindell's book "Making Tracks: An American Rail Odyssey."

Living in SA, I just discovered that we have an Amtrak from SA to Austin for around $12 to $15 a day. I plan to try it soon since that occasional weekend drive to Austin is getting more and more congested. I used to get to Austin in 45 minutes. Now it’s an hour and a half.

Did you know that the Texas Eagle is the longest passenger train route in the United States? If you ever get the chance, you should try taking the entire route from Chicago to L.A.! I've never taken Amtrak long distance, but I've seen many videos of people doing so, and I hope to try it one day! If I ever do, I would probably start with either the Silver Meteor or the Lake Shore Limited since I live in New York. Anyways, I hope you have a nice rest of the day!

The Texas Eagle has an incredible route! I'm not sure if I'll ever take the full line, maybe sometime in the future I will, but I will be taking it from Chicago to Austin in about a month in a roomette which should be great! I highly recommend checking out Amtrak's long distance trains, although be prepared for late trains and plenty of delays.

Traditional dining has returned to many long distance trains. Food has improved plus wine was a free option at dinner service. Up grading food services would attract ticket sales.

Amtrak chose to steal them from the Eagle/Capitol Limited shared transits. They won't return on the Eagle/Capitol Limited shared transits until all of the fleet have been refurbished...

Also it seems like too much credit/blame is often given to the train company since the room could have been spotless when last they touched it but if someone decided to make a total mess in there just before the blogger went in, the train company gets a bad review.

@@LonestarTrips Also, now that I've got you, no one ever shows seat back pockets/nets in use which might be good as I'm not sure what they're for. Same goes for 'cup holders' on seat back trays; does 1/8 inch recess actually stop your coffee from spilling? We need to know darn it! Perhaps add variety in your videos by seeing what will/will not fit into seat back pockets and which cup/flask/jug/flagon will fit into cup holders. I'd suggest stress testing power sockets too but that might cause a fire/get you thrown off so best not.

Smaller bags can be put on the racks above the seats, or beneath the seat in front. If you're travelling with larger suitcases, then there are luggage racks on the lower level.

Nice. Though for expediency for SA to Dallas, I'd likely rent a car and take 35 all the way up. It would all depend on cost, but the drive isn't usually bad.

I'm in Austin, but from Del Rio. I would have done it before now, but the hours....turns a 4 hour trip by car into an 8+ hour trip, so I just haven't. Honestly, I wouldn't mind the hours if the scenery I had never seen before. Again, thank you! I always wondered what the train was like, and you made it possible!

It’s only practical if you’re spending all of your time downtown in either city. Otherwise, you’ll need to Uber/Lyft to the suburbs or, if you’re really lucky, find a rental car location near the station. Any $s you had hoped to save are blown finding other types of transportation just to get around town. Good luck!

It used to just be an event center (We had high school prom, wedding there etc) but it's now an upscale night club (called the Espee) as well. Totally understand if that's not your thing but the inside is beautiful and it's cool to be able to check it out without having to host a $5k event there. It's not too far down the street from the Amtrak station if you're ever back in town.

There used to be two stations in San Antonio. The Southern Pacific station adjacent to the present Amtrak station and the Missouri Pacific station on the west side of downtown alongside the MoPac tracks.

This train is a sad remnant of what it once was. I recall travelling in the early 1960s from Houston to Dallas via Temple with a change from the ATSF to the MKT. The stations are several blocks away from each other. The MKT's "Texas Special" still offered a dining car, which served excellent meals a reasonable prices. Ah, those were the days. Today's "Texas Eagle" transfers from the former MKT track [now UP] to the former ATSF track [now BNSF] a few blocks south of the former MKT station [now demolished].

My grandfather was chief clerk at MoPac in Houston. We took trains often during my childhood. The changes in the last several years are disappointing and heartbreaking . Want my grandkids to experience the glory of past railroad travel. Maybe someday but certainly not now.

I love the Texas Eagle. But it’s a victim of mistreatment. Amtrak couldn’t care about it any less. They didn’t offer a reason why they removed the Eagle’s sightseer lounge in fall 2020. They didn’t give a reason why they did not include the Texas Eagle to have traditional dining restored last summer upon announcement that traditional dining was to return to all western long distance routes and now it is the only train to be operating with a slashed consist. Amtrak had just now reduced the Texas Eagle to four cars for the third time. Meanwhile Amtrak kept the third coach on the Capitol Limited and added another sleeper to it. The Capitol Limited is operating with one more coach and sleeper than the Texas Eagle and it goes less than 2/3 the distance as the Texas Eagle. That means since receiving significant downgrades at the start of the pandemics, the Texas Eagle hasn’t had one pre-pandemic amenity brought back two years later. Amtrak is known for coming up with all sorts of stupid and invalid excuses to degrade LD trains and the Texas Eagle is no exception. I dearly hope that will one day change.

I absolutely agree. The Texas Eagle has seen the worst of Amtrak's flurry of blows against LD routes, and now with passenger numbers recovering, it makes no sense that the consists and services haven't returned to normal. I'll be taking a roomette from Chicago to Austin in about a month, so I'll get to see the full extent of that weird "flexible dining" option Amtrak keeps talking about on their website, but who knows what else I'll see on that ride.

Just confused by the route, in which you say the first stop is San Marcos, then passing through New Braunfels. Physically impossible since you would have to back track from San Marcos back towards San Antonio to get the New Braunfels. I suspect you stop order was the reverse of that New Braunfels, then San Marcos, followed by Austin, etc.

As per Amtrak's baggage policy, passengers are allowed 2 Personal Items and 2 Carry-On bags per ticket, and are also allowed to check 2 bags for free. If you want more specifics, then I suggest looking up the baggage policy. Hope this helps!

Indeed it does! The southbound Texas Eagle (Train 21) runs daily on that route. I believe the train leaves Dallas around noon and gets into San Antonio around 9pm, although I’m not certain those times are accurate.

Cars and busses can take a more direct route, and unfortunately, the tracks are owned by freight railways, so Amtrak trains have to wait for freight trains all the time.

Prices vary considerably depending upon when you book and when you travel as all of the prices in the hospitality industry are DYNAMIC. The fuller it is, the higher the price... Usually coach fares are competitive with airline and bus fares. Sleepers are another story... Get Amtrak promotions notifications from their website to catch the best fares, and be flexible when booking, even a single day can make a significant difference. Above all, avoid holidays...

It really depends on your start and end points! For me, the round trip cost right around $40, taking the train up on a Monday and then back down on a Tuesday. Tickets fluctuate in price often, and if you plan far enough in advance, you may be able to find them for cheaper.

This is interesting. Those wet floor leading to the bathroom, is typical for public facilities. Always creeps me out. Those cups may be for you to rinse your mouth out when and if you brush your teeth, and not for drinking, just my guess. I also noticed a dog, is there a separate compartment for them or are they onboard with travelers?

Dude, you didn't venture past the reception area into the the REAL station. San Antonio's Sunsetl Station is where Selena filmed her music video! People do realize that this area is just reception! Sunset station is older then the trains themselves so we don't us it in order to preserve it.

The "Texas Eagle" is a poor excuse for a train serving two large and dynamic cities in Texas - Austin and Dallas. In Europe, China and Japan fast and frequent trains would be running all day and into the night between much smaller cities and towns. To add insult to injury Amtrak has cut the Sightseer lounge from the already anemic consist.

It's an unfortunate reality we live in. At least Amtrak has sort of realized that there is great potential in Texas, and plans on operating the "Texas Triangle" with three trains per day on each leg, although seeing as a) how long the routes are, and b) the sheer amount of delays each train sees, I'm not so sure it will work as they intend it to. Hopefully the Texas Central will open in the next decade or so and prove the true capacity of Texas as a rail center in the US.

Texas is the second largest state with population and their service SUCKS... Where is that direct daily train from Dallas to Houston? Two of the top seven largest metros in the nation without direct daily train services? Me, I advocate the return of the former Burlington Texas Zephyr, Denver to Houston via Colorado Springs, Amarillo, Fort Worth and Dallas... Oh, my, a direct daily train from Dallas to Houston... Pull the plug out Amtrak!

Honestly, I'm not sure. I think it's anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours in total across a whole route. I think freight delays account for more problems than smoke stops do.

The smoke stop usually are planned at the larger stops with more passengers. Amtrak is a hotel train with many of the passengers lugging multiple bags, not a commuter train with many of the passeengers lugging only a briefcase or backpack... Very rarely can a smoker smoke the entire cigarette...

A pretty objective review of Amtrak. I can readily sympathize with his review of " breakfast" from the cafe/diner. Amtrak's food offerings for coach passengers vary from somewhat adequate and over priced to abysmal and over priced. If possible bring your own food and buy only drinks.

Nice video but it doesn't show much of San Antonio which is the most visited city in Texas which also has the most vibrant city center in the state. The Amtrack station at Sunset Station/ St. Paul Square historic district has beautiful architecture. Austin is pretty as well with it's new skyline.

Unfortunately, my time in San Antonio was very limited. I got to the station just as boarding began right at 6:15am, and I only had a few minutes at the end of my trip to grab a few more shots.

This does highlight the problem with train as a travel medium. 8 HOURS to Dallas??? Trains travel at rates that should be faster and across country. You can drive to Dallas in a rented car in half the time for that same cost if not less it seems. Still, thanks for the informative video.

There is a 40 minute refueling and refilling the water tanks layover in Fort Worth significantly slowing the clock... Minus the stops and waiting for other trains on a siding the Eagle does usually go over 60 mph...

These train tracks were laid by the backs of slaves over two hounded years ago. They have not been replaced much either. The train it self 60+ years old just been repaired and remodeled.

If you want to do that, you would need to take the Sunset Limited to New Orleans and then transfer to a bus or some form of private transport. Amtrak discontinued all sunset limited service east of NOLA after hurricane Katrina.

The title only says “New Interiors,” not “New Coaches.” Nothing about what is shown or written indicates new coaches. Amtrak hasn’t even announced who the contract will be with for the new cars, just that they’ll be made. Plus, this review was made months before that announcement.
