Many authors complaining they don't even have medium monetization enabled in their country.

Exactly, I’m from Brazil and Medium does not monetize publications for writers from Brazil. For several years, I tried to find the motivation to write on medium but since I cannot monetize from it, I always end up giving up on writing to do something else with my time. Just recently, I got tired of waiting for medium allow monetization for my country and I created my own blog. I believe that it’ll be harder to get some money from it at the beginning, but I also think that if I post frequently and learn one thing or two about SEO, I can at least win some dollars in a span of some months or a year.

That’s true. But you can earn through affiliate marketing on Medium without MPP

Try affiliate marketing. Most of my Medium earnings come from affiliate content-that’s nor restricted by MPP! Anyone can write those :)

Hmm, I have been doing canonical links to my WordPress blog. Is that a mistake? Should Medium writers do the canonical link to their blog?

So you have published on your blog "originally" and then on Medium? Or the other way around? Anyways, to grow your own blog in search results, publish a blog post on your blog and then repost it on Medium with a canonical link from Medium to your post. This way Google will only index your own blog's post! On the other hand, if you want your Medium stories to get traffic from Google, publish your posts on Medium and then optionally repost them on your own blog and place a canonical link from your blog to the Medium story. This way Google will only index the Medium story. TLDR; It's all about personal preference. Most of my blogs aren't on Medium at all. But in some super competitive topics, I find better (short-term) results by posting "originally" on Medium (and linking canonically to my own blog.)

@@jalliartturi Appreciate the response. I love to listen to you for inspiration. I post my blogs on Medium and Wordpress at the same time and place a canonical link to my WordPress blog. I did this for around 85 blog posts in a row. I am on article #88 on WordPress. I am hoping to get that blog up and going doing 1 blog a day. Average word count is around 1500 words. I know I must be doing it wrong. I am hoping long-term it works out on WordPress. Well see what happens. I am enjoying the process. :D
