The beauty of this scene is lost without the context given in the movie. The film starts with Eminem's character not having the self-confidence to go up on stage and be ridiculed by his peers. He battles someone that makes fun of all of his shortcomings as a white rapper in Detroit and he chokes on stage. His opponent here led the charge in mocking him in the week long interlude before these battles take place. Over the course of this long week, Eminem's character gets pushed down, kicked around, and finally lets it all out. He always showed the flashes of talent but by the end of the film he finds his voice. The irony comes when his opponent here chokes because he has nothing to say against Eminem's character. Rather than go out all night celebrating, Eminem's character goes back to cover a work shift he agreed to take- showing that he had matured off the mic as well as on it. His situation hasn't improved at all by the end of the movie but he seems to find an inner peace and maturity that he was lacking when it all started.
