This is why I ordered skates. It looks so relaxing. My first week - I’m sore, but I’m making progress but still a long way from effortless like this.

Baby steps! Jack (in the video) didn't even know about tricks for the first 5 years of his progression, so all he worked on was flow. Learning to pump, carve, etc in the real world and just becoming very good at that 😁

It's impressive the level of control you two have to swerve through crowds and cars like that. Although it seemed like there were a few close calls and you might've spooked a few pedestrians. I hope everyone was chill with it; looked like it anyways.

Appreciate that! Freeskates are incredible for maneuverability but yes, we get a little carried away sometimes 😅 To learn to maneuver like this (safely), it’s best to throw yourself into busy environments like college campuses, city paths, etc, even if you start at a slower pace. Eventually you’re able to think on the spot and act quickly when needed 👌

I've learned something really important from this vid -- the Asian squat resting technique, which also reduces air drag! I'm gonna be doing that when my legs need rest. Also from this vid, I've learned you can do pseudo crossover pumps while turning and leaning so you can gain speed during turns.

We can add that to the list! For now, a heat source like a hair dryer will soften up the grip tape. After that you can use your nails or the edge of a blade to get a start on pulling up the grip. Of course, do this safely and under adult supervision 👍

How fast is it possible to go if you skate on perfect level ground in a warehouse AND what happens if you hit a piece of wood while skating?
@pige0223
@pige0223 8 ай бұрын
I measured on very rough road, beginner here I got average cruise speed 9km/h (5.6mp/h) Top speed 19km/h (11mp/h) I'd imagine on perfect ground it'd be a lot faster than that If you hit a piece of wood, chances are the skate will just fly out from under you, and you'll land on your feet

Crazy ride !! I love it ! Wish I can freeskate just like that in 10 years. I'm a beginner, can you help me out please guys? Witch feet is leading the game for standard beginner training; the front or the back feet??
@jmkride
@jmkride 9 ай бұрын
You can ride with either foot in front, left or right! As far as which foot generates power, ideally it’s equal between both feet. As a beginner though, it’s totally normal to have a stronger foot… So you can continue to skate like that, but just make sure you focus on strengthening the other foot as you continue to progress :)

Watched this twice, then still couldn't quite see it, watched it a third time and dropped the speed of play down to .25 (hilarious vocals) and realised that grapevine move is so similar to ice skating, so much skating content to analyse. I think you could easily make another video presenting slowed down content from this video and do a voice over and break down of technique on individual moves, like that grapevine you do at 4.15

I practice with my freeskate for a few weeks now and getting better but there is a thing I don't get. To keep my feet at the right distance, I have to use my inner thy. Therefore I can't really relax on it not even while cruising. I got much better and got somewhat used to the burning muscle pain but I don't think I will be able to ride several kilometers. Sooner or later the muscle will get tired. Is there a trick to be able to relax more? Learning Tokyo looks like would do the trick but it is kinda overkill solution for a simple problem. Thanks in advance. Love your videos, they help me a lot ❤
@ReavoEnd
@ReavoEnd 9 ай бұрын
More practice is the answer! You'll gain endurance in those muscles. The more you practice, the longer you'll be able to go, and the longer it takes to get sore or tired.
@Hunihunor90
@Hunihunor90 9 ай бұрын
@@ReavoEnd obviously.... but with a skateboard for example if I have a bit of a slope I can just relax on the board and not get tired. I cannot do the same on freeskates.
@jmkride
@jmkride 9 ай бұрын
It's not a convenient answer, but the solution to this will be time on the skates. Once you've freeskated for a a while, you should find that the soreness simply goes away, especially in those instances where you're just chilling on a slope. In fact, one of my (Gabe) favorite things to do is just relax and stand still when out cruising, and just take in the view. In these moments, there is no soreness/tiredness whatsoever - it's very relaxing. Your comment, however, does remind me that yes, there is an initial period where you feel like you're having to keep your skates from splitting apart... This feeling should subside, as I've seen it does for everyone that continues to ride. Hope that helps you in some way!
@jmkride
@jmkride 9 ай бұрын
Oh, and as far as some actionable advice... A common beginner mistake/habit is keeping your skates far too spread apart. If you're doing this at all, it's totally understandable that there would be some tension/soreness, as this is an uncomfortable way to skate. Really, once you've learned where your balance point is, go ahead and close up that stance to shoulder-width. If you want, close it up even more so that the skates are close to touching (always remember to keep your weight centered in this case). This should create less strain and also give you so much more freedom with your range of motion. Bending your knees will help as well! Lastly, maybe this distance tips video will be a good refresher: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5LSZ5WGnJioh9U Good luck to you, don't give up!

how long does it take to get used to using free skates?
@jmkride
@jmkride 9 ай бұрын
Really depends on the time you put in! If you really want to get used to them fast, you should make it a routine to use them consistently in the real world. For some of us, that meant riding them to classes in college, or commuting to work. In those cases, a lot can be learned in the first 3-6 months. Of course, over the span of 10 years, Jack has made all sorts of improvements along his journey. Hope that helps!
